Fallout 76’s Todd Howard: No cross-console play because ‘Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like.’

Todd Howard, the Bethesda Game Studios director and creative leader behind the forthcoming Fallout 76, bluntly called out Sony when a German publication asked why that game wouldn’t support cross platform play.

“You cannot do cross-play in 76,” Howard said, according to GameStar.de (via CNET). “We’d really love that but right now we can’t. Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like.”

Summer Games Done Quick closed out its final 24 hours by raising nearly $1 million in donations, to set another series record and send $2.1 million to Doctors Without Borders.

SGDQ organizers announced the record total in a news release early this morning; it’s still likely to increase as donations filter in over the final day. Summer Games Done Quick formally ended around 3 a.m. with a wrap up show streamed live from the marathon’s site in Bloomington, Minnesota.

There’s a Sonic the Hedgehog movie coming, and Jim Carrey is Eggman

If you didn’t know by now, Paramount is working up a live-action/CGI adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog, and Deadline reports that Jim Carrey is negotiating with the creators for the rolle of Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the Blue Blur’s longtime nemesis.

Sonic himself will be a computer-generated animated character when the flick launches (IMDB charts it for a 2019 launch). James Marsden (best known as Cyclops in the X-Men flicks) and Tika Sumpter (The Haves and the Have Nots) have already been cast but their roles are not yet known.

Fortnite player earned the new solo kills record thanks to today’s missile launch

The Fortnite missile launch that players have been looking forward to for weeks finally happened on Saturday afternoon. The event was an exciting and rare moment in the game as it represented the game’s first one-time only event, and the opportunity for the Fortnite community to come together and enjoy something together.

But while most were fairly passive, and more than happy to let their fellow players enjoy the launch in peace, some who saw it as an opportunity to boost their stats. One such player is Elemental_Ray, who destroyed the rap that held up almost half the players in their game and racked up the new Fortnite Solo mode kills record with 48. Luckily a few players there managed to grab videos of the moment.

Valve says it will offer new tools to replace Steam Spy

Steam Spy, the API-scraping website that measured a game’s ownership across the PC platform’s installation base, was gutted in April after Valve adjusted its user privacy settings, obscuring a lot of the data Steam Spy relied upon. Valve now says that it is working on a new set of tools that will deliver the same kind of information to developers as Steam Spy once did, but more accurately and more immediately.

Jan-Peter Ewert, the head of business development for Valve, said the company would soon be opening up the Steam marketplace’s data pipeline to deliver measurements more reliable than the ones Steam Spy reported from 2015 to present day. Ewert, at the White Nights conference for video games in St. Petersburg, Russia on Thursday and Friday, said Valve will soon make data and features similar to Steam Spy’s available to publishers.

Speedrunner doubles her Twitch audience with Tomb Raider’s Games Done Quick debut

Tomb Raider, a title more than 20 years old, recently inducted into a video games hall of fame, and a seminal work in the action-adventure genre that drives the AAA video games conversation of the present day, had never been speedrun at a Games Done Quick marathon.

That changed Tuesday, when the U.K. speedrunner Beckski93 took on Tomb Raider at Summer Games Done Quick. It’s the first time the landmark PC game had ever been run over the past decade of GDQ events. And somewhat fittingly, the game’s first appearance came with a woman at the controls.

Madden NFL 19 has the most 99-rated players in a decade

Madden NFL 19 has the most 99-rated players in a decade

Earlier this week, EA Sports announced that seven (7) players would begin Madden NFL 19 rated 99 overall — a prestigious number for a video game whose ratings are watched more closely than any other sport’s. Seven 99s seemed like a really high number to me. I went back over 20 years worth of launch-day ratings and discovered that, yep, it is.

The last time the Madden NFL series had seven 99s was Madden NFL 07, which was the series’ debut on PlayStation 3. The last Madden to have more was Madden NFL 99, which was the first edition that didn’t publish on either of the 16-bit consoles that made it famous in the 1990s.
