Get out your Nintendo 3DS for this week’s Nintendo eShop update

We usually spotlight Nintendo Switch games in our weekly eShop download posts. It seems like the logical, helpful thing to do — Nintendo’s thrown its might behind the system, and numerous third-parties have come along for the ride. But the Nintendo 3DS is still out there, scratching and surviving, and this week’s set of new releases is a reminder of the handheld’s persistence.

WarioWare Gold is the first entry in the series since 2013’s lackluster Game and Wario for Wii U. It’s also arguably the first one worth playing since WarioWare: D.I.Y. on Nintendo DS, a game that launched almost 10 years ago. We’re into the return to the series’ roots, filled with the franchise’s hilarious characters and even a talking Wario for the first time. Gold is a fun, funny, self-aware parody of minigame collections that holds up as well as the original Mega Microgames! does.

Your responses to ‘Gaming’s toxic men’

Last week, we published an article that sought to explain the proliferation of toxicity in gaming spaces, most especially from angry men. The article was heavily shared on social media and through other outlets. We asked you to send your comments and criticisms to us, and you did so. Here is a selection of responses emailed to us by some of our readers, expanding on the piece, offering personal experiences and giving cogent criticisms. We also received a number of emails that were critical of the piece’s existence, a point of view that is also prevalent in toxic social media spheres and online spaces. We have not included responses that were vulgar, hateful or nonsensical. All letters have been edited for brevity.

Being around the age discussed in the article, I found myself not agreeing with a lot of things. I found exactly one thing to be correct, that being about how young males don’t think that there is discrimination towards their female peers. This is because at our age, there isn’t any.

The Walking Dead ‘story builder’ lets players reconstruct old choices — or alter them

The Walking Dead ‘story builder’ lets players reconstruct old choices — or alter them

For a series going back to 2012, it’s likely that the save files of many that played all three seasons of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead are missing, or that their choices were lost in the transition to a new console generation. For those who remember all the major choices they made, the developer has released a web-based tool to help players rebuild their history with Clementine.

Or they could go in a completely different direction — saving someone they had forsaken earlier, for example (hey, we’re trying to avoid spoilers). The Story Builder doesn’t involve every “so-and-so will remember that” choice — just the major ones that forked the story. It’s also Clementine-focused, so much of Season Three: A New Frontier is left out.

PUBG’s latest PC update includes more consistent damage and dynamic weather

The newest update for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on PC, update 19, is live. Now that the PUBG Global Invitational has come to a close, developer PUBG Corp. is back to making big improvements to the game.

One change in this patch is something players have been asking about for a while now: bullet penetration. What this means in PUBG is that bullets will now go through certain parts of players, like their arms or hands, and hit other areas that will do more damage. It may sound like a small change, but it actually makes quite a big difference. What would have been otherwise good shots could have most of their damage mitigated, simply because a player’s arms happened to be in the right spot at the right time. That often frustrates the player doing the shooting.

Spinda comes to Pokémon Go, and players think it means gen 4 is next

Spinda comes to Pokémon Go, and players think it means gen 4 is next

Spinda is now making its first appearance in Pokémon Go. The third-gen Pokémon is known for having unique patterns, and its Pokédex description says that no two Spinda have the same pattern of spots. In the original Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, this meant that Spinda had over 4 billion possible variants.

Right now, dataminers have found only eight variants. The Pokédex entry for Spinda has eight blank circles beneath the Pokémon, one for each. Here’s the thing: They’re not available in the wild just yet; instead, like many other Pokémon, Spinda can only be obtained after completing a Field Research quest (in this case, landing three nice curveballs in a row ... get it, ‘cuz they spin?).

World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth will send Alliance players to the most beautiful areas yet

World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth will send Alliance players to the most beautiful areas yet

World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth is doing something Blizzard’s MMO has never done before. Instead of both factions leveling in mostly the same set of zones, the Horde and Alliance will each have their own continents all to themselves. The opposing faction players will eventually establish a foothold on the other continent, but during leveling, Alliance players will rarely run into the Horde. This new change leaves each faction with their own “home” zones. Each continent — Kul Tiras for the Alliance and Zandalar for the Horde — has three zones for their faction players to level through.

Life Is Strange 2 teaser hints at a different, darker side

Life Is Strange 2 looks nothing like its predecessors, based on the game’s first teaser trailer. Running just shy of a minute, the video takes us to what seems like a much darker, more mysterious world — and it opens with a murder.

There’s a Resident Evil 7-type vibe to this teaser, which is presented as first-person cop car footage. The recording is dated Oct. 28, 2018, and it’s from someone named Officer Matthews.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy physical copies only have the first game on disc

Two of the three games in the forthcoming Spyro Reignited Trilogy must be downloaded and are not on the retail disc, according to the game’s official site. The news has upset some fans.

Spyro the Dragon is on the disc. Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon must be downloaded. We’ve reached out to Activision for an explanation. A comment given to PlayStation Lifestyle yesterday didn’t answer the question of why this was necessary. “As with most games today, downloading an update after purchase is quite common. The language on packaging and on the web is to let players know the requirements for Spyro Reignited Trilogy,” the statement said.

Spider-Man PS4 gives Mary Jane Watson the chance to be a hero

Spider-Man PS4 gives Mary Jane Watson the chance to be a hero

Superheroes’ on-screen stories could use a lot more women at the center of their worlds. Wonder Woman survived multiple Superman and Batman reboots to finally get her due. Captain Marvel is coming in 2019, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe has spent the last 10 years treading water to get there. After years of being a fan favorite, only now is Black Widow getting her own vehicle. Black Panther’s most exciting heroes, the women who stand with T’Challa, weren’t top billed. It’s not that women aren’t allowed to be heroes — it’s that cinematic universes have rarely propped them up as the stars they deserve to be.

With so many options in its mythology, Spider-Man is more guilty than many Marvel franchises for sidelining female characters. Women figure into every part of Peter Parker’s life: Aunt May is his sole family member, the one thing keeping him from being totally orphaned; science nerd Gwen Stacy was Peter’s first love; Black Cat, who has yet to make her movie debut, is a sexy superhero that Peter falls for.
