Fortnite is about to get a very powerful sniper rifle

The opening screen in Fortnite currently announces the upcoming arrival of a new heavy sniper rifle, and recent leaks indicate that it could radically shift the game’s basic strategy.

“New Epic and Legendary sniper rifle capable of dealing high damage to structures,” the in-game text explains. The Heavy Sniper is “coming soon,” which most likely means that we’ll see it in tomorrow’s weekly content update.

A watercolor fantasy could be 2018’s most gorgeous game

When Devolver Digital invited us to a game preview-slash-art gallery event earlier this month, we knew just one thing: The publisher would be showing off a game called Gris for the first time, teased only with a devastating illustration of a crying woman.

That painting not only perfectly sets the tone for Gris, the first game from the newcomers at Nomada Studio, but it also almost serves as a screenshot from the project. Gris, more than any other game in a long time, is a painting in motion; it is a story told only through emotive imagery, conveyed through color and music.

Bethesda spokesman ramps up pressure on PS4 for cross-console play

Bethesda Softworks’ top spokesman made a remarkably candid comment to Game Informer yesterday: Platforms that don’t allow cross-console play may be cut out of The Elder Scrolls: Legends launch later this year. Though Pete Hines did not specifically name PlayStation, Sony or the PlayStation 4, there’s no other console presenting any obstruction to cross-platform play.

At QuakeCon 2018, Hines, to Game Informer, said Bethesda’s expectations “are essentially non-negotiable.” The Elder Scrolls: Legends is currently on (and cross-compatible with) Windows PC, Mac, iOS and Android. Hines said Bethesda is still discussing the matter with its platform partners, which basically means Sony.

Prey and Wolfenstein take two very different approaches in VR spinoffs

Bethesda Softworks has experimented aggressively with virtual reality over the past years, releasing VR spins on Fallout 4, Skyrim and id Software’s Doom. Two more virtual reality projects are in the works based on Arkane’s Prey and MachineGames’ Wolfenstein series, both of which offer very different experiences.

Arkane’s Prey: Typhon Hunter add-on is the more interesting of the two VR projects. It’s an escape room experience in which players are dropped into Prey protagonist Morgan’s office and must hunt for clues and study objects scattered about the environment to solve a multi-stage puzzle. I was dropped into the virtual office without much in the way of a primer, and had to study whiteboard drawings, documents and instruction panels on fabrication machines in order to make headway.

All of the new details for Fallout 76 Bethesda announced at QuakeCon today

Fallout 76 commanded a huge panel this weekend at QuakeCon 2018. Here you can watch the entire show, in which Bethesda Game Studios’ Chris Meyer (development director), Jeff Gardiner (project lead) and Todd Howard (game director) explain how the Fallout franchise’s single-player systems like progression and combat will translate in an open-world MMO.

Highlights (video is at bottom):

Fallout 76 character customization will add card-based perks to SPECIAL system

Fallout 76, the upcoming multiplayer survival game from Bethesda Game Studios, will employ a card-based system for character customization, game director Todd Howard explained at QuakeCon today.

Like other Fallout games, Fallout 76 will used the SPECIAL system that determines a player’s strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck. As players level up in Fallout 76, they’ll be able to add points to each statistic. The number of points players allot to each statistic will determine how many perk cards they can use for that stat. Those perks are decided through a series of cards — Fallout 76 will include hundreds of cards, Bethesda said — that players will acquire as they level up through the game.

How Fallout 76 will deal with griefers

Fallout 76 is a massively multiplayer game with player-versus-player combat. This raises questions of how the game will manage the more malevolent members of the player base, those hellbent on killing other human players and disrupting their enjoyment.

Bethesda Softworks has thought about this, game director Todd Howard said this weekend at QuakeCon: “We turn the assholes into interesting content.”

Former Nexon marketer cancels game expo panel trashing Lawbreakers

A former marketing executive for Nexon has pulled out of a video games expo where he was to have given a talk titled “Lawbreakers: How I Blew Millions Marketing the Biggest Flop of 2017.”

Destructoid on Thursday noticed the panel, set for the DevGAMM Summit at the end of August in Seattle. Vlad Coho, who had been vice president of marketing for Nexon America, was to be the speaker. But after the talk came to light (and drew a sharp social media rebuke from Cliff Bleszinski, who founded Lawbreakers developer Boss Key Productions) Coho has apparently backed out

Ninja explains his choice not to stream with female gamers

“I don’t play with female gamers,” says Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, Twitch’s biggest streamer and one of the faces of the Fortnite fandom. This edict may be surprising to hear, especially as emphatically as Blevins said it when we spoke at a recent Samsung event.

Though Blevins isn’t shy about being married, and his 500,000-plus subscribers include people of every gender identity, the internet’s love of gossip has convinced the Twitch star not to invite women to participate in his Fortnite Battle Royale livestreams. With fame comes scrutiny of every thing you say or do, he suggested, and that can sometimes lead to questions about who you’re sleeping or flirting with on the sly.

Report: Two big stars out of Star Trek 4 after talks break down

Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth are out from Star Trek’s fourth sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter, following a breakdown in negotiations between the actors and Paramount Pictures. The actors and the studio have both left the table.

Pine has played Capt. Kirk in the three “Kelvin Timeline” films rebooting the sci-fi adventure since 2009. Hemsworth was expected to return as Kirk’s father, a role he played in 2009’s Star Trek. The Hollywood Reporter says negotiations with stars Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and John Cho are expected to close soon.
