3 things to know from Fortnite’s patch v5.21

It’s an off week for Fortnite patches, but patch v5.21 is a little more than the normal content updates we’re used to. While these weeks between big patches are normally reserved for simply adding one weapon or a new game mode, patch v5.21 does a little bit of everything.

While this patch is coming in with more changes than normal, none of them are too surprising. In fact, its main addition was to fix a gap in what was already in the game. The new heavy sniper rifle fills in the need for a high-end weapon in the sniper category as well as a ranged building destroyer. Meanwhile, the new mode offers an entirely fresh addition to the game with a glider infused twist on the traditional 50v50 mode.

‘It’s not an easy time’ for Guardians of the Galaxy cast, says actor

Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt told the Associated Press that he still stands by social media posts stating that he hopes that director James Gunn will be reinstated nearly a month after Disney severed ties with Gunn. Pratt also spoke to the difficulties he and the cast face following Gunn’s firing.

“It’s not an easy time,” Pratt said. “We all love James and he’s a good friend of ours, but we also really love playing the Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s a complicated situation for everybody. And you know, we just want to move forward and do what’s right and be the best people we can be.”

THQ Nordic now owns Timesplitters

Publisher THQ Nordic has added the Timesplitters franchise to its massive stable of video game properties. The company announced today it has acquired the rights to the franchise from its former owner, Crytek, and it sounds like there are plans to bring it back under Deep Silver, which THQ Nordic bought earlier this year.

“We are hugely excited to have acquired Timesplitters,” Klemens Kundratitz, CEO of THQ Nordic’s Koch Media, in an official statement. “The original games gave fans a massive content offer and provided a pure and genuinely fun arcade shooter experience. We have many fans of the Timesplitters series among our own staff who are passionate about creating a product that will thrill todays gaming audience.”

New mechanical keyboard is perfect for people who love their laptops

Peripherals manufacturer Roccat announced its newest set of keyboards earlier this year. It’s called the Vulcan line, and includes all the bells and whistles of a comparably-priced model from Corsair, my current go-to brand for high-quality gaming mechanicals. More than the new boards themselves, however, what got me interested was Roccat’s claim that it had invented its own unique keyswitch, called the Titan Switch Tactile.

After test-driving one for about a month, I’m here to tell you that there’s nothing all that special about the new switch. It feels enough like the the Cherry branded switches that I use every day that I can hardly tell the difference. Instead, it’s the design of the board itself that is worthy of note. It feels like it was custom designed for fans of integrated laptop keyboards, and happens to be a great way to ween people off of them and onto something more comfortable and reliable.

The first player to hit Battle for Azeroth’s level cap did it in just over four hours

A World of Warcraft player has already claimed the title of the world’s first to hit the level cap in Battle for Azeroth, just hours after the game’s newest expansion launched.

A player known as Gingi managed to hit 120, the game’s max level, in just four hours and 17 minutes. This is something that took closer to six or seven hours for other fast players thus far, putting Gingi and his group of two others in the lead by almost a full two hours.

Phantom Doctrine is an XCOM-like tactics game that needs your attention, literally

Those who have played Firaxis’ XCOM series will be familiar with those games’ random dice rolls. You can have an alien flanked, completely exposed and out of cover, and still miss the shot. The team at CreativeForge Games clearly hates that, so it built Phantom Doctrine to be different at its most basic level. When you pull the trigger, enemies die. This Cold War thriller is remarkably dense and, for both good and bad, absolutely demanding your attention.

Phantom Doctrine is a turn-based tactics game out now on Steam and GoG. Players take the role of either a CIA operative or a KGB spy trying to unravel a fictional global conspiracy on behalf of a secret organization known as the Cabal. Set in the 1980s, the events are loosely based on recent history. The tutorial mission takes place in Germany, while the second scripted mission happens inside a secret Pakistani nuclear testing facility.

Dark Souls coming to Nintendo Switch on Oct. 19

Dark Souls: Remastered is finally coming to Nintendo Switch on Oct. 19, publisher Bandai Namco announced today.

The Switch version of the game was previously scheduled for launch alongside the other versions of Dark Souls: Remastered, but was delayed in to a summer release window back in April. Bandai Namco has been relatively quiet about the Switch game’s release since then, but the publisher didn’t offer more detail about the reasons behind the additional delay.

Smash Bros. fan uncovers what Ultimate’s ‘mysterious mode’ is called

Last week’s Nintendo Direct presentation dumped a ton of news about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including the reveal of new fighters Simon Belmont and Richter from Castlevania, King K. Rool from Donkey Kong Country, Chrom from Fire Emblem and Dark Samus from Metroid. It also included a tease of content to come: a “mysterious mode” that’s apparently important enough to be included in the Switch game’s main menu.

Thanks to some digital reconstruction by a Smash fan on Twitter, we might know what that mode is called: “Spirits.”
