Watch 20 minutes of Life is Strange 2 gameplay

After debuting a full-length trailer for Life is Strange 2 earlier this week, developer Dontnod Entertainment and publisher Square Enix are now showing gameplay. The 20-minute video, embedded above, gives us our first look at what appears to be the game’s opening moments.

The original Life is Strange was first released as a series of short episodes in 2015. It told the story of photography student Max Caulfield who found she had developed supernatural powers. Life is Strange 2 is similarly composed, telling the story of 16-year-old Sean Diaz and his 9-year-old brother Daniel who are are forced to flee their life in suburban Seattle after discovering a similarly mysterious supernatural power.

Fortnite is getting portable rifts

Epic Games likes to tease items coming to Fortnite by showing them off in the informational screen that pops up when you first log into the game, and right now that screen is showing off a new item called the Rift-To-Go. Imagine the rifts that currently allow you to teleport above your location on the map, but carried in your pocket and deployed on command.

The static rifts, one of which is shown at the top of this post, appeared in the game at the beginning of season five. Players learned that they could jump to an area above their current position by walking through them, which allowed them to either get the drop on other players or to drift away from the current battle. The distinctive sound of a rift in use also lets you know when you might want to look up to see players falling back into the fight.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice feels like a fighting game

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is definitely not another Dark Souls. Where FromSoftware’s previous action games could feel like tense memory games, the developer’s next effort instead seems to crib from a different genre entirely: fighting games.

The Souls games and Bloodborne can be notoriously uninviting, and that’s what fuels their sense of satisfaction. By contrast, Sekiro’s appeal lies in its careful consideration. Reading your enemies, perfecting the timing on deflecting attacks and creating clever openings: These are the keys to staying alive. Precision like the kind Sekiro requires of you isn’t rare for action games, even if it feels dissimilar from FromSoftware’s most recent series. In Sekiro’s case, however, we found ourselves playing it less like an action game, and more like the kinds of fighting games that make you study your opponents before striking.

Nintendo Labo looks to become truly replayable with Vehicle Kit

The initial charm of Nintendo Labo, the Switch’s cardboard cutouts-turned-peripherals, may have already worn thin. But Nintendo’s third swing at the family-friendly learning tools, a.k.a. the cardboard toys that now live in our closets, seems like an upgraded iteration on what still seems like a brilliant idea.

Our first time constructing the different pieces of the Variety Kit felt wonderful, giving us real ownership over our peripherals. With Labo, gaming was less about technology, and more about the spirit of fun — and through toys in particular. But the compatible games lacked the lasting appeal to make Labo’s first offerings must buys. The Variety Kit feels like a Nintendo Switch minigame collection that doesn’t encourage much repeat play; it’s more like a showcase for the potential of the DIY hardware.

Amazon’s turning its Grand Tour TV show into a game

Amazon Game Studios’ next project is an adaptation of an Amazon Prime Original television show, The Grand Tour, the car enthusiast program hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, all formerly of Top Gear. Aptly titled The Grand Tour Game, the racing game will feature “incredible cars, exotic locations and ridiculous challenges” from the TV series, Amazon said in a news release.

The Grand Tour Game will be delivered episodically alongside season three of the show. It will feature four-player split-screen support and voice-over from Clarkson, Hammond and May. The game will also incorporate footage from the show, with “seamless” transitions between live action and gameplay, according to Amazon.

Devil May Cry 5 hits March 2019, here’s new gameplay footage

Today at Gamescom, Capcom showed new gameplay footage of Devil May Cry 5 and confirmed a release date — March 8, 2019 — for Nero and Dante’s next adventure. The company also revealed new details about Devil May Cry 5’s gameplay, specifically around Nero’s “Devil Breakers.”

Devil Breakers are mechanical arms, crafted by Nero’s ally Nico, that grant the demon slayer special powers. There are eight standard Devil Breakers, Capcom said, including the Overture, an electrified arm that shocks enemies, and the Gerbera, which generates intense heat that can be shot out in a powerful shockwave. As seen in the gameplay trailer above, Nero’s arms also let him snatch enemies with a grappling hook and surf through the air on his rocket-powered limb.
