Old School Musical is a rhythm game that revels in its retro roots

Creating new games inspired by retro classics is tricky. Old School Musical, a rhythm game for the Nintendo Switch and Windows PC, goes all in by not only imitating the look of classic video games, but also the soundtracks that accompanied them.

Getting the visuals down is a simple enough, as 8- and 16-bit era games are relatively easy to mimic, but writing chiptune music that carries the same energy and feeling is another thing altogether. Developer La Moutarde enlisted the aid of modern chiptune artists to craft 50 tracks for Old School Musical to do exactly that, and it’s the best part of a very uneven game.

You might be mad at Battle for Azeroth’s story — and that’s good news

World of Warcraft’s newest expansion, Battle for Azeroth, is all about returning to the roots of Horde against Alliance. In order to get there, the team needed to make some bold choices, including burning down Darnassus, the home of the night elves. Add in the new Allied Race system, which forces factions of old allies like Legion’s Nightborne and Highmountain Tauren to pick sides, and a massive story-based campaign through both Kul Tiras and Zandalar, and there’s a lot of kindling there for players to get mad about online.

People have indeed gotten very mad at certain parts of the story, but Blizzard said that it sees this as a victory, as it sets out to tell its most ambitious set of stories yet.

Battle for Azeroth’s successes and failures, one month in

World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth doesn’t have the same metric for success as other games. It’s an MMORPG, a live service; the initial playthrough is just the start of your experience. The design teams certainly had goals heading into the game, and there have been myriad reactions to the initial content that Blizzard has rolled out thus far.

But let’s look at the entire picture. Now that we’re a month into Battle for Azeroth, how is the expansion shaping up?

Danganronpa and Zero Escape creators join forces, launching new, super-team studio

Chances are if you’ve played the Zero Escape games — a trilogy that combines visual novel elements with complex puzzle-solving, all wrapped up in a mind-bending story full of death and murder — you’re also a fan of the similarly blood-splattered, dialogue-oriented Danganronpa franchise.

It’s only fitting that their creators, Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi (of Danganronpa and Zero Escape, respectively) have joined up to form their own indie studio. Too Kyo Games was revealed as part of a Famitsu Magazine livestream earlier today, during which the seven-member team introduced what it currently has in production.

The Last Remnant comes to PlayStation, only 10 years late

Square Enix promised that The Last Remnant, a role-playing game that launched in 2008 on Xbox 360, followed by a 2009 Windows PC launch, would one day come to PlayStation 3. That never happened, to RPG lovers’ disappointment. But the developer clearly didn’t forget, because a remastered version of the unique title is now heading to PlayStation 4.

The Last Remnant Remastered, as seen in the teaser above, benefits from 10 years of graphical and engine upgrades. The look may have been tweaked, but the story remains the same: Players fight to save their country from years of war, all based on the collection of mysterious runes called remnants. Despite coming straight from the Final Fantasy house, there’s not many similarities here — The Last Remnant is set in a bleak world that’s far darker than the average Final Fantasy game.

Fortnite’s drum gun has been vaulted

Fortnite’s drum gun has been vaulted after months of in-game dominance. The change comes as part of patch v5.40’s content update, which is already live.

While the Fortnite team at Epic didn’t give specific reasons for its decision to vault the drum gun, the reasoning seems clear. When the popular meta began to shift away from shotguns and toward SMGs late in Season 4, the drum gun became the game’s standout weapon.
