Battlefield 5 launch maps range from North Africa to frozen Scandinavian peaks

Today, DICE unveiled the complete list of maps that will be available at the launch of Battlefield 5. These eight locations, which range from arid North Africa to the frigid mountains of Scandinavia, will serve as the jumping off point for the game’s ambitious goal to tell the complete story of World War II’s forgotten battles.

The announcement was accompanied by a trailer, which we’ve embedded above, and a series of in-depth blog posts.

Top 5 reveals from today’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct

We finally have all the details on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, thanks to today’s Nintendo Direct. During this final Smash-focused Nintendo Direct before release, the game’s creator, Masahiro Sakurai, gave fans a preview of the last few features and fighters that are headed to the game.

Among the new features Sakurai announced are Spirits, a massive new system that has characters from various games act as special power-ups for Smash fighters. Also making quite a splash during the announcement was the game’s story mode, World of Light, which looks like it will task Kirby with saving the entire Smash roster from a mysterious evil force.

Here’s how matchmaking will work in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will ditch the “For Fun” and “For Glory” matchmaking types and group online competitors according to new systems, including preferred rules and a ranking called Global Smash Power.

Director Masahiro Sakurai outlined the new features in this morning’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct. Broadly speaking, users may set and change their preferred rules for online play. The matchmaking system will then attempt to group as many people with similar preferences together, and then randomly select one fighter’s set as the rules for that match.

Super Smash Bros. DLC will add 5 characters to the roster

During Thursday’s Nintendo Direct, highlighting the massive scope of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, director Masahiro Sakurai announced inevitable plans for a paid DLC to be rolled out in the months after launch.

Despite 74 characters already on the roster (with the last-minute announcement of a post-release Piranha Plant fighter bumping the count up to 75), Sakurai announced that the game would add new fighters, developed from scratch, exclusively for the paid DLC fighter packs.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate pre-orders include a playable Piranha Plant fighter

Today’s Nintendo Direct presentation was absolutely bursting with new information about Super Smash Bros., but it feels like the best announcement came last. Not only is the game now available for pre-order, but those who elect to pay for it ahead of time will receive a playable Piranha Plant fighter. Nintendo said it’s also making a matching amiibo.

Known for lurking just below the surface of green pipes in Super Mario games, the Piranha Plant has been given unprecedented mobility this time around. He can amble across the screen and launch lunging attacks with tremendous reach. His special attacks include the ability to spit poison and, according to Nintendo’s Masahiro Sakurai, “fire off spiky balls.”

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s story mode is World of Light

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s story mode is World of Light

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a new adventure mode, World of Light, that’s a lot different from those of games past. While this has a story, much like Subspace Emissary did, don’t expect it to be much like that plot-heavy (if you can call it that) campaign. Instead, adventure mode serves to explain how the spirits of Spirits Mode came to be.

A trailer ending the Nintendo Direct dedicated to the game is extremely anxiety-inducing ... because all of our favorite characters die, basically, after being attacked by a series of Master Hands.

Smash World is a free Super Smash Bros. Ultimate social app launching in 2019

During today’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Direct, the publisher announced Smash World, a supplementary service for the upcoming fighting game. Smash World will be accessible through the Nintendo Switch Online app on smartphones and tablets.

Unlike many apps for competitive multiplayer games, the app won’t focus on displaying win/loss records. Instead, the service will allow players to upload and view gameplay videos. Other features of the service have not been announced, but Nintendo says Smash World will receive updates post-launch.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Spirits Mode adds tons more characters to the game

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s newest feature is called Spirits Mode, Nintendo announced during today’s Direct dedicated to the upcoming Switch game.

Spirits are power-ups based on other characters from many of the series represented in the game. There are primary spirits, which can include anything from Cappy of Super Mario Odyssey to Rogue from Sonic the Hedgehog to Hal “Otakon” Emmerich of Metal Gear Solid. Only one primary spirit can be assigned to a player at one time.

Street Fighter’s Ken is the next Smash Bros. Ultimate echo fighter

The fleet-footed Ken Masters of Street Fighter is joining the ever-expanding Super Smash Bros. Ultimate cast as an echo fighter, Nintendo announced during its Smash-focused Direct Thursday morning.

Ken’s costume for this game is inspired by Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, and his moveset echos his moves across the series. As Ken as Ryu’s echo fighter (and they both have similar fighting styles in the Street Fighter series), you’ll see only slight differences between their moves. Ken has a different shaped haduken fire ball and his tatsumaki senpuukyaku hurricane kick does more hits than Ryu’s.

Incineroar is the newest Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Incineroar is the newest Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Incineroar, the fire-type Pokémon that debuted in Pokémon Sun and Moon, is in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Nintendo showed off the buff cat-wrestler during today’s Nintendo Direct, which is all about December’s Switch game.

Incineroar’s inclusion makes sense. The final evolution of the starter Pokémon Fennekin, Incineroar is a dark- and fire-type that is all about beating the crap out of other Pokémon. Its fighting style is based on pro-wrestling moves, as Nintendo mentioned during the presentation.
