Battlefield 2042 will include cross-play, cross-progression

Battlefield 2042 will include cross-platform play between PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, developer DICE and publisher Electronic Arts confirmed Wednesday. Players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms will also be able to play against each other, but given the maximum player-count difference (64 players vs. 128 players) between last-gen and current-gen consoles, cross-generation play will not be included in this year’s Battlefield.

In a blog post, DICE also confirmed that players on PC and consoles can opt out of playing against each other, addressing concerns about skill differences between mouse and keyboard and gamepad players.

The Super Robot Wars series is heading West after more than a decade-long absence. Publisher Bandai Namco will bring Super Robot Wars 30, a new entry in the tactical strategy game series that brings together mechs from Mobile Suit Gundam, Mazinger Z, Mazinkaiser, Getter Robo, SSSS.Gridman, and other series, to North America and Europe on Oct. 27.

A Steam version is confirmed, and it’s available for pre-order. Bandai Namco has not announced a Western release of the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 versions, which appear to be exclusive to Japan and the rest of Asia for now.

NBA 2K22 is scheduled to launch worldwide on Sept. 10 with six different cover athletes across four editions of the game, led by Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić, publisher 2K Sports announced Wednesday.

The background of the Standard Edition features artwork of a shouting Dončić draped in thick brushstrokes of blue, white, and red — a nod to the flag of his native country, Slovenia.

Mario has been trapped inside a luxury watch

For the low price of $2,150, you can live out Bowser’s wildest fantasy and trap Mario on your wrist forever. TAG Heuer, a Swiss luxury watch manufacturer, is collaborating with Nintendo to make a Mario-inspired smart watch, to be released on July 15.

In addition to a Mario Pipe, Super Star, and Super Mushroom on the bezel, the watch also has a customizable display screen where you can pick from a variety of Mario-themed watch faces, one of which just displays Mario standing there. It kind of reminds us of him being trapped behind a painting in Super Mario 64 DS.

Atlus teases too many Persona projects for 25th anniversary

This September marks the 25th anniversary of the Persona role-playing game series, and Atlus cannot be accused of under-celebrating the event. The developer is teasing seven Persona-related project announcements, the first of which will be revealed sometime in September.

That septet of announcements stretches out as far as “autumn 2022,” according to the Persona 25th anniversary website, so settle in for an extended wait. Five projects are listed only as “coming soon.”

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla gets free Altaïr cosplay

Sick of Eivor in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla? You can now turn them into master assassin Altaïr — the original protagonist from Assassin’s Creed. OK, it won’t actually be Altaïr, but you can dress up Eivor to wear the iconic outfit that Altaïr wears.

Ubisoft is giving away the Altaïr costume through its Ubisoft Connect program, which is a free thing that’s supposed to connect players across platforms. In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and a few other Ubisoft games, that means progression is saved between console and PC, too. But it also means different skins and weapons for free or with Ubisoft Connect points, called Units. (You can get units by playing Ubisoft games and leveling in Ubisoft Connect. It’s basically a loyalty program.)

SpongeBob will smash in Nickelodeon’s All-Star Brawl, which is exactly what you think it is

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is a new fighting game that pits Nickelodeon’s most famous characters against each other in pitched combat. Nickelodeon revealed the game and its first trailer on Tuesday in an announcement from IGN.

The game looks to be a clone of Nintendo’s Smash Bros. — publisher GameMill also makes the Mario Kart-inspired Nickelodeon Kart Racers games — with characters from a variety of franchises that each have their own unique move set, and battles that are set in arenas themed after Nickelodeon’s various shows. While the character’s moves seem to be unique, according to IGN, some of the moves from certain characters will have to be unlocked, though it’s not clear how you’ll do that.

Bethesda’s Ghostwire: Tokyo for PS5 and PC delayed to 2022

Ghostwire: Tokyo, the next game from The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks, won’t make its previously scheduled release date. Originally expected in 2021, the game has been delayed to sometime in “early 2022,” the studio announced Tuesday in a statement posted to the game’s official Twitter account.

“We want to get the game in your hands as soon as possible so you can experience the unforgettable version of a haunted Tokyo that we’ve been hard at work building,” the developer said. “At the same time, we’re also focused on protecting the health of everyone at Tango. Our new release window will give us time to bring the world of Ghostwire to life as we’ve always envisioned it.”

Sega sued for ‘rigged’ arcade machine

Sega’s Key Master arcade game is causing problems for the company once again. A new lawsuit alleges that Key Master is intentionally rigged against players. It’s marketed as a game of skill, but players claim machines bar against awarding successful runs, making Key Master more of a chance-based game.

Marcelo Muto filed the lawsuit on Monday in a California court. It’s a proposed class action lawsuit looking for $5 million in damages to be distributed amongst wronged consumers. With Sega, Play It! Amusements (which is owned by Sega and now called Sega Amusements) and Komuse America (which co-manufactures Key Master) are named in the suit.

Nier: Automata’s promised Steam patch coming July 15

Square Enix’s promised update for the Windows PC version of Nier: Automata is coming this Thursday, according to an update on the game’s Steam page. The Steam-specific patch will include updates to stabilize Nier: Automata’s frame rate, as well as add 4K resolution textures for certain visuals, and additional graphics tweaks.

Nier: Automata’s Steam patch was announced in April, shortly after the game came to Game Pass for PC and players noticed that that version was technically superior to the previously released version available through Valve’s digital storefront.
