Connecting Pokémon Go with Let’s Go! can be a pain

Pokémon Go’s influence on Pokémon: Let’s Go!, the series’ very good Nintendo Switch debut, is apparent all over the place. And Nintendo’s not shy about it, with both paid and in-game incentives to connect the two games. They’ve been pitched almost as a pair, as if Pokémon Go were the mobile testing ground for Pokémon: Let’s Go!.

When it comes to actually bringing them together, though, it may be the most annoying experience you have throughout either game.

Star Citizen’s ‘Free Fly’ event lets you test drive $9,000-worth of space planes

The ambitious Star Citizen project passed a major milestone last week when it pushed out a new update on its live alpha servers. To celebrate, the team at Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) is making its multiplayer game free to play from Nov. 23 through Nov. 30. Most importantly, it’s also making every one of the 80-plus flyable in-game ships free to fly. The team tells Polygon that’s roughly $9,000 worth of ships at the current retail price on its crowdfunding storefront.

The Star Citizen project includes both an unreleased single-player game (Squadron 42) and a multiplayer, MMO-like game called the “persistent universe” or PU which is currently in an alpha state. Since the original Kickstarter campaign launched in 2012, the team at CIG has funded the game mostly by selling access to the PU and single ships on an individual basis.

Half-Life’s hated Xen levels look great in Black Mesa remake

The original Half-Life turns 20 this week, and to celebrate the team behind the high-profile remake Black Mesa has a new trailer to share. It’s our first look at Xen, the setting for the original game’s troubled third act, and it looks phenomenal. The team says it expects to release the level to the public sometime in the second quarter of 2019.

Half-Life tells the story of Gordon Freeman, an MIT-educated theoretical physicist and one of the only survivors of a trans-dimensional rift at the Black Mesa research facility. In the final few levels of the original, Freeman travels to the planet Xen where he battles all manner of massive alien creatures while exploring Xen’s bizarre biomes. Along the way, however, he also encounters some of the first-person shooter genre’s most terrifying enemies — the dastardly jumping puzzle.

Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja introduced the second new character coming to Dead or Alive 6 this weekend: NiCO, the genius scientist/martial artist who fights with shocking plasma attacks. She’ll join Dead or Alive series newcomer Diego when Team Ninja’s fighting game hits PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One on Feb. 15, 2019.

NiCO is known as The Lightning Technomancer, according to Koei Tecmo, and practices the martial art known as Pencak Silat from Southeast Asia. Here’s her official description:

Marvel Comics and Riot Games partner for origin comic about League of Legends’ Ashe

We’ll soon know a few more details about the origin story of one of League of Legends’ most iconic champions thanks to a comic that will be co-created by Riot Games and Marvel Comics, the two companies announced early Monday morning.

The comic will focus on Ashe, a white haired archer and leader of the largest tribe in the icy-frozen region known as the Freljord. The comic will be called League of Legends: Ashe: Warmother and will focus on the character's origin story. Beyond simply focusing on her origin story, Riot and Marvel didn’t give many details on what the actual story of the comic would be except saying that it would follow her from a fairly young age.

Understanding spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Understanding spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is introducing a new collectible called “Spirits.” They’re replacing trophies as the main collectible in Smash, and they’re pretty much Pogs. Rather than 3D models, they’re cutout images of characters from deep video game lore — and not just Nintendo’s. We’ve got Goku (not that Goku), multiple versions of Revolver Ocelot, and some guy from Disaster: Day of Crisis. These little dudes aren’t just for looking at! They factor into the gameplay of a few modes: World of Light, and Spirit Board.

While director Masahiro Sakurai talked at some length about Spirits in the final Super Smash Bros.-themed Nintendo Direct, we didn’t fully grasp the system until we tried it out for ourselves. There’s a lot to take in. Spirits act as trading cards, power-ups, perks, virtual pets and more. They add another layer of complexity and chaos to an already chaotic game. Check out the video above for a detailed breakdown of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Spirit system: what they do, how you get them, and how you use them.

‘Fix PUBG’ overhaul wraps up, developers say

“Fix PUBG” is over. PUBG has been fixed.

PUBG Corp. said on Friday that the three-month project to shore up PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ performance, matchmaking, balance and fair play has drawn to a close. Going forward, said Taeseok Jang, the game’s executive producer, developers will focus on stability and gameplay quality — priorities that had been forsaken as the team pushed to get new content out, leading to the need to fix PUBG.

GameStop’s Black Friday 2018 deals on gaming include PS4 Spider-Man bundle for $199

GameStop today published its full listing of Black Friday specials and discounts, on the heels of 12 early Black Friday deals yesterday. Video gaming’s mega retailer is pushing several console bundles — none involving the Nintendo Switch, of course. But an Xbox One S 1 TB NBA 2K19 bundle is eye-catching at $159.99, as is the PlayStation 4 1 TB Spider-Man bundle at $199.99.

A $50 gift card offer for buying any console excludes that Spider-Man bundle but it’s good to keep in mind, as it can help create a bundle with a basic console and a game of your choice. GameStop has also put some of the year’s newer releases (since August) on sale from $27 (Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey) to $39.99 (Fallout 76, which only launched Nov. 14). And for those spending $69.99 or more, and are willing to wait for a rebate check, there’s a free used Xbox 360 for you to pick up.

Fallout 76’s next patch is coming tomorrow

Fallout 76’s next post-release patch is due on Monday, five days after launch, bringing with it several fixes and upgrades spotlighted during the game’s two-week beta.

Many of the big changes address quality-of-life features PC users expected and asked for — among them a push-to-talk chat feature, whose absence was really disincentivizing social play on that platform. PC users will have to wait a little longer for a field-of-vision slider, but that is coming “soon,” along with ultrawide 21:9 monitor support.
