The first look at Sonic the Hedgehog’s live-action version is horrific

Popular video game character and social media luminary Sonic the Hedgehog is getting his own live action/animated hybrid film from Paramount Pictures in 2019, with Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) cast as the titular mammal.

IGN has released an exclusive “motion poster” that hints at what the character will look like in the film, and we already have some concerns about what they’ve done to our friend Sonic. His arms and legs look heavily muscled, for starters. And there’s also the issue of all that fur.

The Witcher’s Geralt is coming to Monster Hunter: World

Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher is coming to Monster Hunter: World next year. Unlike other crossovers for Monster Hunter: World, Capcom and CD Projekt Red’s collaboration is more than just a costume; Geralt will be a playable character, and the game will send players on “Witcher-inspired quests.”

In an announcement, CD Projekt Red said the Geralt cameo in Monster Hunter: World will “offer a unique gameplay experience blending RPG mechanics of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with Monster Hunter: World’s game systems.” Players will get to utilize Geralt’s “signature fighting style, seamlessly blending swordplay, combat magic, and an assortment of monster hunting equipment,” CD Projekt Red said.

Monster Hunter: World expansion, Iceborne, launches fall 2019

An expansion for Monster Hunter: World is set to launch next fall, Capcom announced today. Set for all available platforms — PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One — the add-on is called Iceborne.

Iceborne will tell a story that follows directly after the end of Monster Hunter: World’s campaign, introducing new weapons, quests, environments and monsters. As the name implies, expect a lot of cold weather to befall the world too.

Hades throws you right into the hellfire instead of wasting your time

Hades throws you right into the hellfire instead of wasting your time

Hades, the new early-access title from Supergiant Games, dropped onto the Epic Games Store right after its announcement at The Game Awards on Thursday night. Perhaps it’s appropriate that the game’s opening sequences follow that same pattern — setup, then flinging you right into the action.

I hadn’t realized until after I played a couple of hours of Hades how refreshing that is. You get a very short cutscene explaining the basic deal of the game: You are Zagreus, Prince of the Underworld. Your father, Hades, is terrible at actually being a father, so you’re set to escape the realm and join the rest of your distant family, the gods on Olympus. Then you start hacking and slashing as Zagreus. While the rest of the pantheon is there to aid you with skill upgrades and brief flashes of encouragement, there’s no guiding light. It’s just you and the darkness.

South Korea criminalizes ‘boosting’ with new law

Boosting — basically one person playing on another’s account to rank them up — is going to be a criminal offense in South Korea with some stiff punishments awaiting the booster.

The new measure comes courtesy of an amendment to the country’s Game Industry Promotion Act, reports The Daily Dot. That law was passed in June 2017. This new measure was developed in collaboration with the video games industry in the country and will punish boosters with a fine of up to 20 million won, which is roughly $18,000. They also get a two-year suspended prison sentence.

Kingdom Hearts 3’s newest movie highlights its second main theme

The official YouTube channel for Kingdom Hearts 3 published the game’s introductory movie yesterday, and it recaps what’s taken place over its long canonical history.

The music is a new song, “Face My Fears” by Hikaru Utada, who did the opening themes for Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts 2. She was originally going to do a remix of “Chikai” (or “Oath”) the Kingdom Hearts 3 main theme. But when she brought aboard Kingdom Hearts superfan Skrillex, they elected to go with something completely new, and co-wrote “Face My Fears.”

China sets up a video game ethics panel in its new approval process

In China, it’s about ethics in video games.

The South China Morning Post reports that the nation now has an “Online Game Ethics Committee,” as a part of the government’s laborious process for game censorship approvals. China Central Television, the state’s broadcaster, said this ethics-in-games committee was formed to address national concerns over internet addiction, “unsuitable content” and childhood myopia (nearsightedness, apparently with video games as a cause?)

Conan Unconquered, by C&C’s remaster studio, coming in 2019

Funcom’s next Conan game is Conan Unconquered, a strategy game being developed Petroglyph Games — which was recently tabbed for the remaster of the RTS classic Command & Conquer series.

A news release from Funcom touted Conan Unconquered as a fast-paced strategy game “where players face wave after wave of enemies in ever-increasing numbers and difficulty.” Players will have to build and fortify their strongholds to withstand “savage hordes,” and they’ll be able to summon gigantic units (see above) to crush their enemies, see them driven before them, and hear the lamentations of their women.
