Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to add Persona 5’s Joker as DLC

At the Game Awards 2018, Nintendo revealed what’s next for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Joker from Persona 5 will join the roster sometime next year as the game’s 76th fighter, a new trailer revealed. The protagonist of one of last year’s best RPGs will be among the first fighters to be available as DLC.

Joker is the name of the Phantom Thief lead of Persona 5. Players can choose his civilian name, but he and the rest of his teen crew switch to using these codenames — and their very good costumes — when they enter various realms to help solve some serious existential mysteries and crimes. Persona 5 is only playable on PlayStation consoles, making this the character and game’s first appearance on Switch.

Epic Games announced The Block, a new Fortnite in-game community spotlight

It’s been a big week for Fortnite. On Wednesday developer Epic Games announced that the game would be getting a new creative mode that would allow players to build as much as they want, Fortnite season 7 started on Thursday morning and now the company has announced The Block, a new in-game area that will be used to show off some of the most exciting and impressive community creations on the standard Battle Royale island.

The announcement came along with an extremely brief trailer that showed a giant concrete slab dropping into the area that was once Risky Reels. The trailer didn’t reveal much, the real information came from Epic Games’ worldwide creative director, Donald Mustard who announced that the area would tie-in closely to the new Creative mode. While there isn’t a way to share what players make in the mode at the moment, the best creations will be highlighted by Epic and transported into The Block to become a temporary addition to the standard Fortnite map.

Rage 2 coming May 14, new trailer shows open world

First-person shooter Rage 2 got a new gameplay trailer at The Game Awards tonight, revealing how the action-heavy shooter has moved on from the original game’s gritty tones for a more colorful post-apocalypse. The game now has a release date of May 14.

The game’s over-the-top violence and tongue-in-cheek humor is a hallmark of developer Avalanche Studios, which is creating the game for publisher Bethesda. Avalanche recently completed Just Cause 4 for Square Enix, which was launched earlier this week, and this trailer definitely has a Just Cause creative-destructive vibe. The first Rage, released in 2010 to positive reception, was created by id Software, which is working on the sequel with Avalanche.

Psychonauts 2’s first story trailer introduces the Motherlobe

At the 2018 Game Awards, Double Fine and Starbreeze showed off the first story-based trailer for Psychonauts 2. While there is some light gameplay shown toward the end of the trailer, the main focus is on introducing the Motherlobe, a secret fortress of mind secrets that the sequel seems to focus on.

This trailer makes one of the few appearances of Psychonauts 2 in the last year, with the last real news around the game popping up last year, when it was delayed past 2018. Despite a newly announced 2019 window, we currently have little else to go off on when this long-awaited game will launch. However, it does seem that the 13-year wait for a sequel to the beloved, quirky, psychological adventure game will finally come to an end soon.

Stranger Things season 3 is getting its own game

A new Stranger Things game is coming and will follow the story of the upcoming season, and its first trailer was revealed during The Game Awards on Thursday night.

Stranger Things 3: The Game will be a 16-bit top-down action game that lets players take control of the series’ main cast throughout the events of the upcoming third season of the popular Netflix science fiction show. It’s not entirely clear what exactly this plot will be, with the day being saved at the end of last season, but there’s always more trouble in the town of Hawkins, Indiana, just around the corner, so there are sure to be plenty of dark creatures from the Upside Down to battle. With the show itself being a love letter to the ’80s, it’s no surprise to see that the latest game will adopt the style of games from around the same time.

The Pathless is the Abzu team’s beautiful follow-up

One of The Game Awards 2018’s premieres was the fantasy game The Pathless, which looks beautiful. We can’t say too much about it yet — because the trailer doesn’t tell us much — but from what we can glean, it’s an adventure game set in a forest of all kinds of creatures, from hawks to fire monsters.

And, again, it looks beautiful.

BioWare teases new Dragon Age something: The Dread Wolf Rises

It’s been a long winter for Dragon Age fans, but the first signs of spring might just be showing: BioWare has revealed a teaser for a Dragon Age related ... something.

With a slow pan over a red lyrium-looking artifact, fading to the franchise’s now characteristic tarot card-esque art, the teaser played some infamous lines of dialogue from Dragon Age: Inquisition’s companion character Solas in the game’s final plot DLC.

Although the game will have challenging, Dark Souls-inspired combat, developers stress that working together will be the key to victory.

Ark Survival Evolved creators’ new game is a massive pirate MMO called Atlas

Ark Survival Evolved creators’ new game is a massive pirate MMO called Atlas

Jeremy Stieglitz and Jesse Rapczak, the directors of Ark: Survival Evolved, have announced their new game at this year’s Game Awards, and it’s going to be a big one: The pirate MMO, called Atlas, is apparently 1,200 times bigger than Ark: Survival Evolved.

Atlas takes advantage of an Nvidia technology called “WaveWorks” to show off a new level of realistic water physics. If the game is going to be that big while focusing on the open seas, it better be able to compete with games like Sea of Thieves when it comes to the beauty of the water.
