California election resolved with Dungeons & Dragons dice

In California, two candidates for an irrigation district’s board of commissioners ended up tied in November’s election and had to make a saving throw last week.

That’s right, incumbent Larry Enos Jr. and challenger Milan “Pete” Petrovich rolled a 20-sided die to determine their contest for a seat on the Byron-Bethany Irrigation District’s board. And the die was, in fact, taken from someone’s Dungeons & Dragons set. Scott Konopasek, assistant registrar of voters in Contra Costa County, said someone in the office happened to have it lying around.

Epic pulls overpowered Infinity Blade from Fortnite, says it ‘messed up’

Epic Games announced on Friday afternoon that the Infinity Blade, Fortnite’s newest weapon, which was added to the game earlier this week and has been a major source of fan outrage since, has been removed.

“We messed up and rolled the Infinity Blade overpowered/without good counters, especially in the end game,” Epic said on the Fortnite Twitter account. “The Infinity Blade has been Vaulted and we are re-evaluating our approach to Mythic items. Thanks for calling us out on this!”

Capy Games’ Below already feels worth the long wait

Capy Games’ Below already feels worth the long wait

If you’ve nothing going on this weekend, I recommend you take a look at Below, released today for Windows PC and Xbox One.

I should add some caveats to that statement. I’m reviewing the game for Polygon, but I only got code last night, and so far, I’ve managed to play about five hours. That’s not enough to give an unequivocal thumbs up. But I just wanted to pop in here and have a word, just in case you’re thinking of buying it during an atypically busy (for new video games, that is) December.

Rockstar giving Red Dead Online players more free cash, gold bars

Rockstar Games is once again handing out free money to players who have tested out Red Dead Online’s beta. That includes free gold bars, that game’s premium currency, as well as an infusion of cash for certain players. The announcement was included today in a news release detailing the game’s latest patch.

Players who have already participated in the beta, or who do so through Dec. 20, will receive an additional 15 gold bars by Dec. 24. This is in addition to the gold bars already handed out earlier this month.

Metro 2033 movie on hold, and it’s probably a good thing

A Metro 2033 movie is off, and for fans of that franchise who expect a faithful representation of its canon, that’s probably a good thing.

In an interview with VG247, the writer and Metro creator Dmitry Glukhovsky said that production on a Metro movie has stopped and the rights have reverted to him. The reason, Glukhovsky said, is that MGM and script writer F. Scott Frazier wanted to Americanize the movie and set it in Washington.

In the race to beat Steam, the Discord Store just made a huge move

Discord, one of the most popular voice chat and community platforms for PC gaming, only started selling games in August. The company announced Friday that it will double down on its role as a marketplace in 2019 by allowing developers of all sizes to self-publish games — while offering an aggressive 90/10 revenue split, which will give more money to developers than most other game distribution platforms currently do.

According to the company’s announcement of this new initiative, it all started with a question, “Why does it cost 30% to distribute games?” After a bit of research, Discord decided that there was no reason the process should cost that much. “Turns out, it does not cost 30% to distribute games in 2018. [...] We discovered that we can build amazing developer tools, run them and give developers the majority of the revenue share.”

Pokémon’s next movie is Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution

Pokémon’s next movie is Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution

The next Pokémon movie in the long-running franchise looks familiar. It’s Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, a feature that’s said to have some kind of tie to the first Pokémon movie. But whether this is a sequel, remake or something else entirely is a complete mystery.

The movie was first teased this summer with the Japanese release of Pokémon: Everyone’s Story — known in the U.S. as Pokémon: The Power of Us — but all we have to go off is some intense artwork of our boy Mewtwo. His leering eye stands out among bubbles that suggest he’s floating around his test tube. (Mewtwo is the rare manmade Pokémon.)

NES Classic, SNES Classic are no longer in production

The NES Classic and SNES Classic are on their surprise farewell tour, according to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week, Fils-Aime said that both mini-consoles will not return to store shelves once their current stock sells out — essentially making this holiday season their last.

“We’ve said that the current systems are the extent of our classic program,” Fils-Aime said. “We’ve also been clear that, at least from an Americas perspective, these products are going to be available through the holiday season and once they sell out, they’re gone. And that’s it.”
