Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC to include Mii Fighter costumes

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate downloadable content will begin to rollout early next year, and it will consist of more than the previously announced fighters pass collection. Nintendo’s support site indicates that Mii Fighter costumes will also be in the mix, sold separately from the larger downloadable content bundle.

These 75-cent purchases will include a single costume for the game’s Mii Fighters, which are customizable characters that players can design from head to toe. There are already plenty of costumes available to purchase and collect throughout the game, ranging from unique headgear to outfits based on existing characters. But just as Super Smash Bros. for Wii U before it, Ultimate’s catalogue clearly has room to expand.

The year in gaming controversies

A look at gaming controversies in 2018 reveals the ongoing story of large, powerful organizations struggling to cope with the consequences of their worst impulses. Faced with strong headwinds of public reprehension, they often misapprehend the problem and apply wrongheaded solutions.

From greedy commercial tricks to toxic workplace cultures; from callous employee policies to feeble free-speech compromises, game companies are finally being forced to face the consequences of their actions, or at least to face the inconvenience of negative publicity.

The biggest Kickstarter of the year, at $6.2M, is a board game

The largest Kickstarter campaign of the year has just closed after raising more than $6.25 million. The project is for Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, an elaborate board game by Poland’s Awaken Realms, the same team behind This War of Mine: The Board Game.

Tainted Grail feels like a game that only Awaken Realms could produce. Based on a blend of Arthurian legend and Celtic mythology, it’s a cooperative experience with card-based combat. At its core is a 100,000 word game book that contains the entire narrative arc of the experience. The base game is played across 15 chapters, some of which can take as long as four hours to complete. But, thanks to what the team stresses are multiple, divergent paths, the game also has a lot of replayability.

Hellshots Golf combines the best of Doom, golf

Hellshots Golf combines the best of Doom, golf

Like golf? OK. Like Doom? Great! Modder TerminusEst13 has just the concoction for you: Hellshots Golf. Take a gander at it above.

While I do not play golf (in real life anyway), as a 45-year-old white man living in the rural South, I consider myself the Polygon writer most qualified on the subject. And in my professional opinion, Hellshots Golf is a perfect representation of what golf would be like on Mars with Pain Elementals impolitely playing through your round.

Blizzard’s trying to clean up Twitch chat by tying it to Battle.net accounts

Since the earliest days of the Overwatch League, Blizzard has had a tough time getting fans, and even pro players, to behave themselves in Twitch chat. Whether it was spamming emotes or simply posting offensive messages, every week of the Overwatch League meant more and more bans. However, as we head into the league’s second season, Blizzard is trying combat Twitch chat toxicity through a new program that it will first test during Overwatch Contenders.

Contenders, the semi-professional division of the Overwatch League, hosts its own broadcasts on a Twitch channel separate from Blizzard’s pro league. It’s on this channel that Blizzard will run its first tests of a new chat moderation system.

Steam’s biggest sellers of 2018 are old favorites, and they’re on sale

Valve released a list of the best-selling games of 2018 on Steam today, some of which are discounted as part of the PC games retail portal’s winter sale.

Among its “platinum” sellers — the 12 games that returned the most revenue in 2018 — only three were released this year. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey ($29.99), Far Cry 5 ($23.99) and Monster Hunter: World ($39.59), this year’s platinum releases, are currently discounted.

Street Fighter 5’s in-game ads are gone, for now

Street Fighter 5: Arcade Edition’s in-game ads have come and gone. The garish and intrusive ads, optional though they may be, no longer display in Capcom’s fighting game, and Street Fighter series producer Yoshinori Ono said the company is looking at ways to improve them.

Sponsored content came to Street Fighter 5 in early December. While the initial pitch for in-game ads seemed tolerable at best, the implementation was ugly and comically bad. Ads for the Capcom Pro Tour were slathered over the flesh and costumes (and children’s skulls) of the Street Fighter roster.

Bloodstained drops support for Mac and Linux, apologizes to backers

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, the side scrolling action game from former Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi, will no longer support Mac or Linux. The news comes shortly after the cancellation of the version for PlayStation Vita, a delay into 2019, and the addition of resources from Shantae series developers WayForward.

The news broke in a public post made by Igarashi himself today on Kickstarter.

Nintendo leans into Persona 5 love as Switch rumors rise

It’s only fair that Persona fans would clamor for a Nintendo Switch version of the excellent Persona 5, following this month’s reveal that Joker will be a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter. Atlus has only encouraged the fervor with a recent slew of domain registrations — and now Masahiro Sakurai, Smash Bros.’ director, is adding more fuel to the fandom’s fire.

Atlus’ YouTube account uploaded a 10-minute video today of Sakurai’s recent trip to Atlus HQ, where he talked about his affection for the demon-collecting, high school-set RPGs. It’s all in untranslated Japanese, although translations from viewers on Twitter suggest the interview is all complimentary toward Persona.

Dynasty Warriors 8 and Donkey Kong Jr. round out a quiet Nintendo Switch eShop update

Nintendo isn’t releasing many new games for Switch this week, giving players who may have received the hardware as a present time to get caught up on games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

The biggest release of the week is probably Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Definitive Edition, which comes with all the downloadable content from previously released versions of the game. This $39.99 release is just the thing if you want to make sure you get everything with one purchase.
