Red Dead Online gets a bigger battle royale mode today

Rockstar Games has a new update for Red Dead Online that brings a bigger battle royale-style mode to the game. Named Gun Rush, the game mode drops up to 32 players into a battle to be the last player standing as they scramble for weapons and ammunition in an ever-shrinking play area. Gun Rush will be available in free-for-all and team variations.

Red Dead Online, the online competitive multiplayer component of Red Dead Redemption 2, already had a game mode based on the battle royale genre known as Make It Count. But that take on battle royale was on a much smaller scale, and focused less foraging for weapons than it did on quiet survival. Gun Rush should make battle royale in Red Dead Online a more action-oriented contest.

Catherine comes to PC today

Catherine, the 2011 romantic thriller-meets-platformer developed by the Persona team, is now available on Steam. It’s a (sort of) surprise release that marks a major step for the Japanese developer: Catherine Classic is Atlus’ first internally developed game to come to Windows PC.

The PC version of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game comes with several upgrades over the console versions, including 4K resolution, customizable controls, and an unlocked frame rate. Catherine Classic also offers a choice between English- and Japanese-language voice acting, a feature not included in the Western console release. The PC version costs $19.99.

Nintendo eShop update delivers double the Mario Bros.

The Nintendo Switch eShop is back in full swing this week with a fresh batch of new (but also not so new) games for the Switch, including New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition. Both games come to Switch on Jan. 11.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe includes the Wii U platformer and its New Super Luigi U follow-up along with new content: Toadette and Nabbit are now playable characters. It’s one of the first great games of 2019, we said in our review of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.

PlanetSide Arena’s weapons should feel familiar to PlanetSide 2 players

Ignoring the hammy segues, this behind-the-scenes video for PlanetSide Arena contains a lot of information on the vehicles and weapons players will be using when Daybreak Game Company’s new multiplayer shooter launches at the end of the month.

PlanetSide Arena, which we previewed last month, is a class-based shooter featuring traditional multiplayer types as well as, yeah, a battle royale. The variations Daybreak is touting include a weapon upgrade system whereby players can “purchase” better equipment on the battlefield after a certain score has been reached (somewhat akin to the way Star Wars Battlefront 2 will spawn you a hero or a vehicle with a certain score). Vehicles are another differentiator that designers hope will quicken the pace of an expansive 250-on-250 mode called Massive Clash.

Legendary Eleven is a fun slice of arcade retro soccer

From the mega-afros and big perms to the teensy little shorts, Legendary Eleven takes its soccer style cues from the golden age of the 1970s.

This arcade-style sports game has been out on Windows PC and Nintendo Switch since the middle of last year. But this week, it arrived on Xbox One. I gave it a go, and enjoyed a brief transportation back to the time of Zico and Beckenbauer. But Legendary Eleven also offers a time warp to ’90s-style soccer games, with all that entails.

Bungie caves after new Destiny 2 puzzle stumps players

Destiny 2’s newest puzzle has players completely stumped.

With Destiny 2’s weekly reset on Tuesday came a new event known as Niobe’s Torment. After players found their way to a previously hidden area on the EDZ location, Niobe Labs, they discovered a multi-tiered puzzle. Completing that puzzle will unlock the fourth and final forge in Destiny 2’s Black Armory Annual Pass content.

Civ 5 designer Jon Shafer opens up about the personal struggles that delayed his next game

Since the release of Sid Meier’s Civilization 5 in 2010, designer Jon Shafer has made more headlines for what he hasn’t accomplished than for what he has. Now, in a deeply personal essay, he has opened up about what’s been holding him back. The piece comes on the eve of the release of his next game, At the Gates, which is bound for Steam on Jan. 23.

At the Gates is a novel strategy game that began life as a Kickstarter project, where it raised more than $100,000. In a feature story from 2013, Polygon called Shafer and his collaborators “superheroes.” As it turns out, Shafer himself was anything but.

It took two years but beasts are finally in Fire Emblem Heroes

Ever since the launch of Fire Emblem Heroes back in February 2017, fans have been asking for beast units. That wait comes to an end tomorrow with the Rulers of the Laguz banner, which finally introduces the unit type to the game.

The first beast units were introduced to the Fire Emblem franchise back in 2005 in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance on GameCube. These units, known as the Laguz, could transform between animal and human form. Transformations ranged from hawks to wolves to ravens. Since then, beast units have been represented in many of the major Fire Emblem releases, including Awakening and Fates.

The Division 2 coming to Epic Games Store, skipping Steam

Ubisoft and Epic Games are teaming up to bring the publisher’s PC games, including March’s Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, to the Epic Games Store.

The Division 2 will be semi-exclusive to the Epic Games Store on Windows PC. Ubisoft will also sell the PC version through its own online storefront, but The Division 2 won’t be released through Steam, which currently features a product page for the game. A representative for Ubisoft told Polygon via email, “We have no plans currently on releasing Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 on Steam.”
