Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will alter DLC scenes and dialogue after all

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s “Shadow Heritage” expansion will get changes to its story and cinematics after all, following a controversy in which the protagonist character was hard-wired into a heterosexual relationship that conceived a child, despite the earlier story choices some players could make taking them into same-sex romances.

A Ubisoft community manager said that Ubisoft Quebec is making changes to a cutscene and dialogue in Shadow Heritage “to better reflect the nature of the relationship for players selecting a non-romantic storyline.” The changes and a renamed trophy/achievement some found insensitive and inconsistent with their character will be implemented in a future patch.

Unlocking Kingdom Hearts 3’s secret movie takes a little work

Even when it launches on Jan. 29, Kingdom Hearts 3 won’t have all of its content available to check out. Square Enix won’t give players access to the game’s epilogue until Jan. 30, and won’t allow them to unlock a secret movie (a series tradition) before Jan. 31.

But gaining access to the latter post-release addition, the secret movie, will take a bit of work on the part of players. Unlike the epilogue, which can be viewed upon finishing the game’s main storyline, the secret movie only unlocks after players complete an additional set of requirements.

Fallout 76 reveals details of the new PvP game mode: Survival

Fallout 76 is getting a new game mode geared toward more competitive players seeking a challenge, Bethesda said in a blog post.

This game mode, Survival, will be accessible from the main menu. Upon launching Fallout 76, players will have the opportunity to choose between the existing experience, now known as Adventure, or the new Survival mode, which has “the same quests, events, and story that you’re used to in Adventure mode.” Existing characters can be brought into Survival, where they will share their inventory and status across both game modes.

For Honor’s third year of new content will open Jan. 31 with a new hero, a Knight by the name of Vortiger the Dark Hero, who was announced a week ago. Ubisoft Montreal has more to come over the four quarterly “seasons” this year, and runs down what to expect in this video published yesterday.

After Vortiger, the Samurai, Viking and Wu Lin factions will get new heroes, in that order, in or around April, July, and October. These updates will also deliver new maps, new gear, new customization options and effects. Each season will also offer a major event.

Overwatch Lunar New Year 2019 kicks off, here are all the skins

Blizzard Entertainment is celebrating Lunar New Year for a third year in Overwatch, a seasonal event that will run from Jan. 24 to Feb. 18. This time, it’s the Year of the Pig, and players can gorge on new skins for characters like Tracer, Reinhardt, Reaper, Brigitte, and, yes, even Orisa.

For Overwatch Lunar New Year 2019, Blizzard is adding eight new skins — six legendary, two epic. Five of those skins are based on Chinese military generals, strategists, and warlords from the country’s Three Kingdoms period: Guan Yu (Reinhardt), Lü Bu (Reaper), Huang Zhong (Hanzo), Zhang Fei (Torbjorn), and Zhuge Liang (Zenyatta). Orisa gets a skin, Sanye, based on the Korean lion dance costume. Brigitte gets some ornate Korean general garb. And Tracer gets a skin based on Korean folklore hero Hong Gildong.

Anthem feels as good as Destiny, but has BioWare’s creative touch

As a competitor to Bungie’s Destiny series, BioWare’s Anthem offers enough that’s new to justify its own existence. The world is pretty. The characters are tolerable. Most importantly, it moves and plays in a way that feels right. This is a competent piece of work.

Although a shared-world shooter is a departure from BioWare’s solid action-RPG history, Anthem retains enough of the developer’s creative signature to mark it as more than just an attempt to regain ground lost to the genuine innovation that was Destiny.

WRC’s official rally racing game returns after skipping 2018

An officially licensed World Rally Championship racing game will return in 2019 after skipping last year. WRC 8 will launch this September for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One.

Publisher Bigben Interactive said in a news release that developer Kylotonn had incorporated feedback from the community and the game’s official esports series to “go above and beyond WRC 7,” which launched in September 2017 to middling-at-best reviews. The statement promised “better graphics, more technical routes, smoother pace notes and a more comprehensive career mode” in WRC 8.

World of Warcraft cinematic pays off an event from five months ago

The war between the Horde and Alliance in World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth began in earnest last year when the expansion launched. However, the Battle for Dazar’alor raid is the first time the two factions are duking it out in one of the new capitals. And this fight is host to an event that was set up right at the dawn of the expansion five months ago.

When Battle for Azeroth first launched in mid-August, players embarked on what Blizzard called the War Campaign. Unique to each faction, the War Campaign involves the Horde and Alliance poking and prodding at each other in various ways — as well as recruiting a new allied race to their side.

Hulu announces a price drop, just days after Netflix’s price hike

Just days after Netflix raised prices on its monthly subscriptions, rival streaming service Hulu announced a price drop, lowering its basic subscription plan from $7.99 down to $5.99 per month. The new pricing will take effect on Feb. 26.

Unlike Netflix, which raised prices on every plan, Hulu’s price drop only applies to the ad-supported tier of its subscription service. Pricing on the ad-free plan will stay at $11.99 per month. However, Hulu is also raising prices on one plan: the Live TV subscription package, which offers live streaming and DVR. It will jump from $39.99 to $44.99 per month.
