Rainbow Six Siege introduces two new Australian operators

Rainbow Six Siege has introduced themed pairs of operators for some time. These new characters come from the same country, organization, and often have history together. The new Australian operators, Gridlock and Mozzie, follow that trend. These two characters are part of the upcoming update, Operation: Burnt Horizon.

Operators serve as the faces of Rainbow Six Siege, and Ubisoft has taken care to craft a diverse range of characters. Tori “Gridlock” Tallyo Fairous and Max “Mozzie” Goose come from Austalia’s SASR. According to the official backstory, they met during a robot fighting fest, but they are on opposite sides of the Siege battlefield.

Nintendo Switch eShop is full of great, big surprises this week

Nintendo dumped a bunch of surprise news yesterday during its first Nintendo Direct presentation of the year. Both a totally new Tetris game and a Final Fantasy classic launched on the Nintendo Switch eShop following the streamed event, big-enough headliners to make this a good week for the console.

Tetris 99 is a free downloadable game that’s exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. It’s what folks call a battle royale-like version of the classic puzzle game, pitting 99 players against each other to clear their Tetris boards. If it sounds exhausting and anxiety-inducing, hey, it is!

Hollow Knight developers announce a full sequel, Silksong

Hollow Knight developer Team Cherry surprised fans this morning by announcing a full sequel to 2017’s bug-filled metroidvania game, called Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Silksong stars Hornet, the princess protector of Hallownest from the previous game, who provides some challenging fights against the main protagonist, the Knight. According to a blog post by indie studio Team Cherry, Hornet was kidnapped and taken to a “whole new kingdom haunted by silk and song.” Her journey through to that kingdom’s peak takes her past 150 new enemy types, and through vivid environments like “coral forests, mossy grottos, gilded cities and misted moors.”

Tetris 99 manages to make the classic game more intense

The core gameplay of Tetris is designed to be nail-biting. While the formula has had a few shake ups since then, little work has ever been needed to make the easy-to-learn, impossible-to-master game any more challenging. The surprise release this week of Tetris 99, a battle royale-esque version of the game now on Nintendo Switch, goes to show that Tetris can indeed be made more intense. The game’s developer, Arika, does this not by ramping up the speed, but by pitting you against 98 other players looking to knock you out.

The execution is straightforward: It’s competitive Tetris, but instead of one-on-one battles, Tetris 99 is a 99-player free-for-all. As I clear lines, I can send garbage blocks over to one of my many opponents, filling their board up with extra lines they need to clear. If too many blocks flood a player’s screen, they are knocked out of the game. True to the battle royale genre, this game of knockout happens until one player is left standing.

District 9 director releases new Anthem live-action trailer

Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9 and Elysium, has released a new short film called “Conviction” set in the world of EA’s upcoming RPG, Anthem. While EA is calling it a short Anthem story, it doesn’t focus much on story at all. It’s more like a live-action trailer for a movie that doesn’t actually exist.

The short follows several pilots as they use their Javelins, Anthem’s small personalized mech suits, to protect Fort Tarsis, a stronghold built to protect the rebellion’s survivors. The pilots find a mysterious girl out in the forests that are often patrolled by alien factions. The girl seems to have some kind of strange power that attracts the attention of someone who might be a rogue Javelin pilot who’s fighting against Fort Tarsis and its defenders. It’s all a little unclear.

Hearts of Iron DLC lets players revive the Confederacy, decolonize the British Empire

Hearts of Iron 4 is one of the most complex games I’ve ever played. The World War II-themed grand strategy game, just like everything else from Paradox Interactive, has been continuously updated since its release in 2016. But this next bit of downloadable content, titled Man the Guns, may be its most controversial yet.

In a daring bit of counterfactual history, Paradox will allow players to revive the Confederate States of America, commonly known as the Confederacy, and lead them into war against Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany.

Fallout 76’s ‘purge’ of duped items begins

Fallout 76 is currently offline, as Bethesda Game Studios attempts a solution for the game’s most destructive and longest-running exploit: duplicated items.

The downtime began at 9 a.m. ET and is expected to last several hours, a community manager wrote this morning. “During this time, we’re planning to remove items that have been created through duplication exploits from player inventories and stashes,” they said.

The Stranger Things-themed D&D Starter Set is real, includes Mike’s homebrew campaign

In the opening scenes of Netflix’s Stranger Things, four young boys sit around a card table playing Dungeons & Dragons. The vignette helps set the tone for the entire series, foreshadowing much of the narrative arc of its first season. Now the story is coming full circle, thanks to an officially licensed Stranger Things-themed starter set for D&D.

The Hasbro Stranger Things Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Starter Set showed up on Amazon just yesterday. Polygon reached out to Wizards of the Coast for more information, as not much is available there, but the publisher was unable to provide anything else.
