THQ Nordic CEO apologizes for company’s 8chan event

Last week, THQ Nordic’s public relations team chose the website 8chan to host an AMA (Ask Me Anything) question-and-answer session for the studio, an ill-advised decision given the site’s association with child pornography, racism, and hate and harassment campaigns. Backlash was swift and widespread, prompting THQ Nordic PR and marketing manager Philipp Brock, who devised the AMA, to apologize.

Now, the head of THQ Nordic AB, the Swedish parent company of Vienna-based THQ Nordic GmbH, has apologized for the event.

Apex Legends tops 50M players in first month

Apex Legends has passed another milestone in its meteoric first month. Respawn Entertainment announced on Twitter that the game has reached 50 million players — a huge feat, considering the free-to-play battle royale game launched just four weeks ago.

Since its surprise launch in February, Apex Legends has grown at a massive rate. Within its first eight hours, the game had one million players; by the end of its first day, 2.5 million people had jumped in.

Front Mission spinoff Left Alive appears to have rough Japan launch

If you’ve been getting your hopes up for Left Alive, the spinoff of the Front Mission series, well, don’t. If its Japan launch is any indication, this is a troubled game that Square Enix appears to be burying.

Siliconera notes that players cannot stream Left Alive, after being able to do so on launch day (Feb. 28). Moreover, the game is already in the bargain bin, selling for almost half-off on Amazon Japan.

Yep, someone modded Thomas the Tank Engine into Resident Evil 2 Remake

Yep, someone modded Thomas the Tank Engine into Resident Evil 2 Remake

There’s a theory of anthropology that suggests that when a new medium is introduced (cave walls, sculpture, illuminated manuscript) humans’ first instinct is to use it to depict Thomas the Tank Engine. OK, I made that up. But if the earliest cave painters were basically modders, then it follows that Thomas shows up in Resident Evil 2 Remake as Mr. X, following modded appearances elsewhere.

This is the work of ZombieAli (modeling here) building off the sound effects of DJ Pop, who needed less than a month post launch to replace Mr. X’s footfalls and punches with Thomas’ steam whistle and theme. The combo was spied on Twitter yesterday by Pixelbuster (mod links via PC Gamer)

Fallout 76 finally gets whiskey stills on March 12

Fallout 76’s newest workbench sounds like something out of Tapper, and not the root beer edition. Bethesda Game Studios detailed what they have in mind with the Brewing Station, which is on tap (do ho) for Tuesday, March 12 in this month’s Wild Appalachia series of updates.

Players will get the Brewing Station during an onboard quest called “Wasted on Nukashine,” and with it, players will be able to brew beer, make wine and distill spirits that’ll getcha bombed quicker’n fishing with dynamite. Of course, this being Fallout, there will be a variety of effects that come from your potent potables.

RIP PS Vita: Sony officially ends production

Sony has ended production on the PlayStation Vita, effective today. The company announced that the platform’s two remaining SKUs have been discontinued on the Vita’s official product page,

The handheld’s pending demise was known well in advance; a Sony senior executive said last year that manufacturing and shipping of all versions of the device would end this year. Hiroyuki Oda also said at the time that there are no plans for any kind of a follow up, which seems obvious.

Modern Warfare 2 Remastered rating suggests it’s next in line

PEGI may have taken down a listing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered but its brief appearance, plus the swift removal, probably means it’s on the way. Activision has yet to announce any such thing, though.

It doesn’t make any sense that it would show up now. Activision used Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered as a pack-in incentive for 2016’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (much to the displeasure of some fans). The next year, it launched as a standalone release on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. And for March, it’s available to PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Under Night In-Birth’s Evo invite is a long time coming

The folks behind the Evolution Championship Series, often regarded as the most important fighting game tournament of the calendar year, revealed the 2019 lineup during a live broadcast last week. Evo 2019 will feature a largely safe collection of returning titles and expected newcomers, but one game, Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st], was quite a surprise. But saying its first appearance at Evo came out of nowhere would be disingenuous. Under Night In-Birth’s invitation to Evo 2019 is the result of years of dedication from its core playerbase, and a sign the community had proven that they deserved to be part of the influential tournament series.
