Fortnite’s new Avengers: Endgame mode has a shoutout to Stan Lee

Fortnite’s new Avengers crossover mode, Endgame, is all about Infinity Stones and the war with Thanos. But no matter which side you’re on, the ending screen will have a nice little shoutout to the memory of Marvel Comics mastermind Stan Lee.

Excelsior is a Latin word that means “ever upward.” Throughout his life, Lee often used the word as a sort of catchphrase and personal motto. As he was the creator of some of Marvel’s most iconic heroes, the phrase seeped into the comics themselves and has come to be associated with Lee.

In Fortnite, the phrase appears on the end-of-game screen no matter what happens in the match. If you’re playing the heroes or villain, win or lose, the bottom of your screen will still give you a nice big “Excelsior!” for your efforts.

Respawn: Apex Legends will stick to seasonal updates to improve quality, avoid crunch

Developer Respawn Entertainment says it wants to “reset our commitment” to fans of its free-to-play shooter, Apex Legends, in the wake of criticism about the game’s update cadence. But executive producer Drew McCoy stressed in an update on the game on Thursday that our goal isn’t, and never has been, to patch or update content on a weekly basis.”

Fans and critics alike point to the absence of regular new content as part of the reason that Apex Legends has seemingly lost its momentum. Both its player base and its ranking on Twitch have dropped precipitously over the past few weeks. According to TwitchMetrics, viewership is hovering somewhere around 20,000 on average, down from a high of more than 357,000 in February. The game currently sits ranked at No. 14 on the streaming platform, well behind its direct competitor, Fortnite, which is a lock in the top slot.

Epic says it will stop store exclusives if Steam offers a better cut

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says that the company will end the practice of securing exclusive game releases for its store if Valve, the company behind Steam, matches Epic’s revenue share for developers and publishers.

Calling Steam’s 30 percent cut on game sales and the platform’s market dominance “the #1 problem for PC developers, publishers, and everyone who relies on those businesses for their livelihood,” Sweeney said in a back-and-forth exchange on Twitter that Epic could back away from the unpopular practice of signing Epic Games Store exclusives.

Overwatch Workshop will let players script custom game modes, heroes

While Blizzard is wrapping up Overwatch’s 2019 Archives event, fans won’t have to wait long for the next addition to the game. In a developer update posted Wednesday, game director Jeff Kaplan shared details on the upcoming Workshop mode, which gives players tools to prototype their own heroes and build their own game modes.

Kaplan describes the Workshop as a “scripting mode that will allow you to make custom game modes within the custom game browser.” Players can already create their own custom rule sets, but the Workshop will be a far more robust system for players to set up and distribute their own spins on Overwatch. Players will have access to some of the same tools as the developers and programmers to make “whatever they could come up with, wherever their imaginations would take them.”
