Overwatch Anniversary 2019 event goes live, here are all the skins

There’s a lot going on in Tuesday’s Overwatch update with the kickoff of the game’s seasonal Anniversary event. The new event, which runs May 21 to June 11, brings with it a bunch of new skins and other cosmetics, as well as the return of all other seasonal event Arcade modes.

Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan recently said that Blizzard would soon add a new D.Va skin that would “break the internet.” Apparently, that’s D.Va’s new Academy skin, which gives her what appears to be a private school uniform. D.Va gets a second skin as part of Overwatch Anniversary 2019: an Epic-tier color scheme, Midnight.

Hearthstone rolls out Rise of the Mechs, starting June 3

Hearthstone has kicked off its new single-player campaign, and the Rise of Shadows expansion has settled. Blizzard is rolling out a new event, Rise of the Mechs, starting June 3. The event will include a new legendary mech card called SN1P-SN4P, buffs to cards across the board, and a new arena draft rotation.

A golden version of SN1P-SN4P will be obtainable for anyone who logs in between June 3 and July 1. Anyone who misses the event will be able to craft SN1P SN4P for the standard price of 1.600 Arcane Dust. (Sorry, you can’t get a golden crab boy.) For the purposes of rotations, SN1P-SN4P will be part of The Boomsday Project expansion, but he won’t drop from Boomsday Project packs.

New VR game combines tactical stealth action with kayaking

Oculus VR game Phantom: Covert Ops has the most surprising secret ingredient in recent memory. It’s a tactical stealth-action game in which the player tries to prevent all-out war by infiltrating an enemy base. And it’s played, in its entirety, inside of a kayak. A tactical kayak.

Phantom: Covert Ops is the union of two in-development projects at nDreams, the U.K. studio behind VR fare like Shooty Fruity and Bloody Zombies. The studio, which has made virtual reality versions of skydiving and hot air ballooning, was working separately on a kayaking game and a stealth game. At some point during that development, those two projects were brilliantly combined to form Phantom: Covert Ops.

The Sims 4 is free on PC right now

The Sims 4 has been quietly toiling away since the release of Get Famous and Strangerville, adding free content packs that include new career options and terrain tools. While the expansions are still locked behind a paywall, fans can claim the base game of The Sims 4 from Electronic Arts, via Origin, through May 28.

In order to claim The Sims 4, fans can head to the Origin client or their online storefront. The Sims 4 can be downloaded for Mac or Windows PC; there’s also the option to purchase the Digital Deluxe edition for $49.99, and a reminder that the content is part of EA’s Origin Access subscription program.

The Sims 4 has one of the best character creators around, and the ability to build and create environments is worth the download alone — especially since the new terrain tools allow for more customization of lots than ever.

Mordhau players bust through map, reach character select screen

Mordhau players are an inventive bunch. Whether it’s using ladders to trick enemy AI, or using complex jumps to reach supposedly unreachable parts of each map, players have spent the month since the game’s release learning all they can about it. But now, players have discovered a specific glitch that trumps everything else in the medieval combat sim. Players have found a way to escape the boundaries of a map and reach the character select screen.

Sony demonstrates ‘PlayStation 5’ in new video

During Sony’s Investors Relations Day in Japan, the company talked more about its next generation console (likely called the PlayStation 5, though no official name has been confirmed yet). It also demonstrated the capabilities of the new hardware in a video.

The return of PlayStation Now confirms that Sony will continue their game subscription streaming service. There were no details about which older console games will be supported via Now. Backwards compatibility has already been confirmed, but there’s no word on whether Now will include PlayStation 3 games, which the PS4 couldn’t play.

After bungled Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop launch, Paradox focusing on Bloodlines 2

After bungled Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop launch, Paradox focusing on Bloodlines 2

Vampire: The Masquerade is a tabletop role-playing franchise that dates back to the 1990s. The core experience was always the work of White Wolf Publishing, but that team was gutted late last year following the repeated inclusion of inflammatory and insensitive content in the game’s fifth edition. Owner Paradox Interactive says it has learned its lesson, and production of the next game in the franchise will be handled differently.

Paradox purchased White Wolf from CCP Games in 2015. Not long after, White Wolf announced that it would develop a fifth edition of its classic pen-and-paper RPG. But that effort was plagued with bizarre controversies. An early playtest packet included references to pedophelia and neo-Nazi ideology, prompting an apology. The retail version dealt with issues of sexual violence, but clear guidelines on safely running games were only added after the fact.

Apex Legends patch 1.1.3 improves hit detection and makes stealth tougher

Apex Legends’ latest patch is here and while it’s fairly light on content, there are quite a few important quality of life improvements to the game.

The most important change in patch 1.1.3 is all about hit detection. Hit detection determines whether or not fired bullets hit a target. With any online game there’s bound to be a problem or two with how the hit detection works, since it has to be accurate for every player in the game, no matter their location and connection. But Respawn Entertainment’s goal with this patch is to get it as close to accurate as possible. To help with this Respawn also introduced a new diagnostic system that should help them fix future hit detection issues.
