The internet is ready to die for Ikumi Nakamura, the most genuine person at E3

I’ve watched a good number of E3 presentations in my time, and even during good pressers, you always get the feeling that things feel a little forced, or too choreographed. Perhaps this explains why tonight’s brief Ikumi Nakamura (Okami, Bayonetta) cameo during Bethesda’s announcement of GhostWire: Tokyo has people so excited. She’s not like the usual people we see on the E3 stage.

For one thing: Her outfit is pure fire. This is worth noting, as E3 is usually a sea of suits with T-shirts underneath. Nakamura looks like she actually dressed up for the occasion, which I appreciate.

Rage 2’s first expansion coming later this year

Rage 2 developers Avalanche Studios and id Software are bringing a host of new features to the game in a series of updates that includes the game’s first expansion, according to a trailer that debuted during publisher Bethesda Softworks’ E3 press briefing.

Weekly content updates — or, as the trailer puts it, “new s#%t dropping weekly” — will consist of additions like cheats (such as low gravity), vehicles (like the Armadillo), game modes, enemies, and pilotable mechs. The developers are also working on Rise of the Ghosts, an expansion that will introduce more story content, new weapons and abilities, another enemy faction, and new areas to explore in the wasteland.

Orion is Bethesda’s game streaming tech, Doom demo coming up

Bethesda announced a suite of patented game streaming “technologies” called Orion on stage during its E3 2019 press conference. Developed by id Software, following “years of research and development,” the Orion technology is designed to reduce the latency, bandwidth and computing power needed to deliver a solid experience for a streaming video game. Instead of the hardware approach favored by platforms like Google Stadia and xCloud, id’s technology optimizes game engines themselves for “performance in a cloud environment.”

Promising 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, Bethesda’s James Altman puts Orion in the pantheon of the company’s tech firsts, such as the first first-person shooter, mods on consoles and, boldly, the first consumer-ready virtual reality headsets (a claim it famously litigated and won in 2018).

A new look at Wolfenstein: Youngblood, a game with beaucoup Nazi-killing

Developer Marchinegames gave us a new look at the next game in its Wolfenstein series, the co-op adventure Wolfenstein: Youngblood, at Bethesda’s E3 2019 press conference on Sunday.

As previously announced, Wolfenstein: Youngblood is set in the 1980s, two decades after the events of Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. Players will assume the roles of Jess and Soph Blazkowicz (aka “the Terror Twins”), as they embark on a mission in Nazi-occupied France to find their missing father, BJ.

Deathloop is a weird, wild game from Arkane Lyon

Deathloop is a weird, wild game from Arkane Lyon

Arkane Lyon stole the stage during Bethesda’s E3 presentation with the announcement of their new IP, Deathloop. Deathloop takes place on a frozen island named Black Reef, and the developers describe the game’s setting as a ‘time of madness’. We definitely got a glimpse at that madness in the announcement trailer that debuted at E3.

There’s a lot going on in the game’s setting — riots, spooky environments with flickering ghosts, supernatural powers, and a rivalry between two protagonists. There’s a time loop — one might call it the titular Deathloop — and one seeks to break the cycle while the other is attempting to perserve it.

Commander Keen mobile game coming this summer

One of id Software’s earliest franchises is being revived by Zenimax Online Studios as a mobile game. Commander Keen is an online iOS and Android game which utilizes a Saturday morning cartoon style and tactical strategy gameplay.

While the gameplay for Commander Keen isn’t super clear, based on the stage demonstration, it does appear to be family friendly, with cute character designs and approachable touch controls. The game’s two heroes, twins Billy and Billie, are able to build gadgets to get the upper-hand on a variety of nasty aliens.

GhostWire: Tokyo is the next game from the creators of The Evil Within

GhostWire: Tokyo is the newest title by Tango Gameworks, the developer behind The Evil Within. The game was revealed during Bethesda’s 2019 E3 press conference.

Tango Gameworks is known for its work in the horror game genre and while this game definitely has spooky vibes, Tango notes that this is an action-adventure game. In GhostWire: Tokyo, players will have to travel through the city, avoiding harmful spirits and possibly getting help from friendly ones. The trailer for the game shows people disappearing and skeleton-like demons taking over, meaning it’s time to knock some skulls together to figure out what’s going on.

Big Fallout 76 update brings human NPCs as Bethesda changes course

Fallout 76 has been quietly upgrading and polishing its features since its controversial launch. Some of the biggest updates along its journey have included the new Sheepsquatch monster, brewing stills, and new quests. The game has leaned into the cooperative and storytelling aspects of the Appalachian Wasteland, and the newest announcement at E3 shows the next content to come. Now that Wild Appalachia is complete, the next content updates will be called “Wastelanders.”

“Wastelanders” brings the Overseer back, and shows that there has been a progression of time since the game’s launch. NPCs have been added to the world. We saw an example of a conversation with a raider, a Fallout 76 player moving with their companion squad, and different factions in the world. There will be full quest lines, dialogue trees, and rewards to match.
