Rare Atari 2600 game is going for $90,000 on eBay

It seems like “rarest video game ever” is a fungible label, or at least one for which there is no consensus. But there is no dispute that very few copies of Extra Terrestrials (a knockoff, not that game), a 1983 game for the Atari 2600, made it into the wild, and that 36 years later, one of them is for sale. Whether it’s worth $90,000 is another question altogether.

Previously, listings for acknowledged rarities like Stadium Events have caught our attention, as much for their price as for their ties to video gaming history. Stadium Events contained the predecessor of the Power Pad, before Nintendo bought its maker and pulled the product from shelves. Other claimants to rarest-game honors include Air Raid, previously billed as the rarest Atari 2600 game ever.

Stranger Things’ Upside Down portals have started appearing in Fortnite

It looks like Fortnite’s Island and the town of Hawkins, Indiana have a few things in common. Portals began showing up inside the game’s mall this morning, on Wednesday, July 3. While there’s no official word on what these portals are or why they’re in the game, it’s impossible to ignore just how much they look like the portals from Stranger Things.

In the show, these portals lead to the “Upside Down,” which is a sort of a toxic alternate dimension filled with monsters. In Fortnite, the similar-looking portals just send players to another part of the mall. If you enter one portal, you’ll exit at the connected portal. You aren’t going to be headed to the Upside Down while playing Fortnite, at least for now.

Publisher of indie game that mocked Chinese president loses business rights

The Chinese publisher for a Taiwanese studio that mocked Chinese president Xi Jinping in its environmental assets has lost its business license, according to another publisher.

Iain Garner, co-founder of the publisher Another Indie, which is based in Asia and Europe, tweeted what is evidently the text of the order stripping publisher Indievent of its rights to do business. This follows by about four months a flap over the horror game Devotion, whose earlier versions contained background art (a poster in an apartment) saying “Xi Jinping Winnie-the-Pooh moron.”

Hacker in DDoS attacks on Daybreak Games gets two years in prison

Another hacker behind attacks on Daybreak Game Company, then known as Sony Online Entertainment, is going to prison. Austin Thompson of Utah will be behind bars for the next 27 months, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California announced Tuesday.

Thompson, 23, pleaded guilty in November (official charge: “Damage to a Protected Computer”) in connection with attacks in late 2013 against SOE; his group, “DerpTrolling,” was allegedly behind several denial-of-service attacks on online service for several SOE games, plus Battle.net, League of Legends, and Dota 2 in late 2013.

Epic will refund Shenmue 3 backers upset by game’s move to Epic Games Store

Some of those who backed the campaign to make Shenmue 3 on Kickstarter were upset when developers moved the retail product from Valve’s Steam storefront to the Epic Games Store. Today those same backers were informed that, even though they were promised a Steam code at launch, they won’t be able to get one. Those upset by the debacle are being offered a full refund by Epic Games, not Shenmue 3 developer Ys Net.

The announcement comes courtesy of a Kickstarter update from the game’s development team and a series of tweets from Epic CEO Tim Sweeney.

Life is Strange 2 writer explains the game’s surprising sex scene

Life is Strange is a series unafraid to dive into sensitive subjects, from teen suicide to substance abuse. Life is Strange 2, which touches on issues ranging from race to police brutality, follows suit — but even so, I wasn’t prepared for the way the sequel handled an intimate moment.

In the first Life is Strange, there are definitely hints of romance if you pursue them, but protagonists Max and Chloe never truly explore a relationship. Before the Storm, the prequel, can be more of a love story if you choose, but even then, much of the sparks are relegated to subtext where dialogue has double meaning.

Cyberpunk 2077 team won’t say if more video games in that universe are in development

Following an article published by a Polish business news outlet, CD Projekt Red won’t confirm or deny that it’s making additional games set in the Cyberpunk universe beyond Cyberpunk 2077.

On July 1, financial and business website Bankier.pl reported in Polish on statements from CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński. Online translations of the article seemed to indicate that there were three projects in the works related to Cyberpunk 2077. Reached for comment, CD Projekt Red — a subsidiary of CD Projekt — said that’s simply not the case.

Rainbow Six Siege heads to the Old West in this new event

Rainbow Six Siege is a very modern game, what with all of the operators using their high-tech gadgets in an elaborate game of breaching and clearing. But what if Siege went to a humbler place? The newest showdown event answers this question by turning Rainbow Six into a Western.

From July 2 to July 16, players will be able to participate in a 3v3 showdown. This action looks a lot closer to Red Dead Redemption than Rainbow Six, with attackers and defenders fighting over the objective of Fort Truth. Fort Truth is a brand new map specifically for this event.

Apex Legends season 2 patch notes have Wattson and plenty of balance changes

Apex Legends season 2 is bringing with it some of the most substantial balance changes the game has ever had. On top of rebalancing certain weapons and heroes, the patch for the new season also altered the map, and even added a new Legend: Wattson.

Wattson is a more defensive hero than any that have existed in Apex Legends so far. Rather than the traditional strengths of running and gunning, Wattson takes a more careful approach, using her electrified fences to establish perimeters and her Interception Pylon ultimate to stop incoming ordnance and repair damaged shields.
