What happened when a Fallout 76 fan pretended to be a beggar

Andreslamantis, a 36-year-old from Argentina, knew that Fallout 76 players were known for being helpful, as many take it upon themselves to be the NPCs of the wasteland. But how far would a player go to help a fellow comrade out? Andreslamantis tested this out with a special build where he could not meaningfully craft, mod, or scavenge — all he could do was rely on other players.

He was, in short, role-playing as a beggar, tattered clothes and all. Andreslamantis set up shop in Flatwoods, where both low-level players and veterans like to congregate. Here, he lies down on an empty mattress and waits for people to come by. He has put up a “Free Hugs” sign by his humble abode, in the hopes of drawing attention to his self-imposed situation.

Mario Maker 2 master makes upside-down kaizo level, and it’s horrifying

Kaizo levels are famed for being the most grueling courses that Mario fans can play — and that’s with a normal perspective. With the release of Super Mario Maker 2, which gives players unusual tools to craft levels, expert fans are trying out things that we’ve never seen before. Take, for instance, this Kaizo level that is played entirely upside down.

I made an upside-down Kaizo level. Please don't play this.

Donkey Kong 3, Wrecking Crew join NES library for Switch Online

This month’s Nintendo Switch Online update brings two more NES classics to subscribers but, more importantly, a rewind feature to let perfectionists undo their minutest of errors without restarting the whole game.

On July 17 (one week from today), Rewind will become available to all games in the Nintendo Switch Online collection. Hold ZL and ZR to trigger it and move back to a point before the goof-up, then play from there.

Rejoice! The Switch Lite has a proper D-pad

The long-rumored, portable-only Nintendo Switch Lite was revealed on Wednesday morning, with all of the features we were expecting. It’s smaller, it’s lighter, and it ditches detachable Joy-Con controllers. Instead the controllers are permanently attached to the device itself, akin to a 3DS or Game Boy. But lacking support for traditional Joy-Cons means the Switch Lite can offer something that its bigger brother can’t: an actual D-pad.

Joy-Cons are designed to function in two ways: vertically, as the left side of a modern controller, or sideways, as a stand-alone controller. Because of this dual functionality, Nintendo needed to crack a way to have four face buttons on every single Joy-Con, no matter if it was the left or the right one. Its solution was to reimagine the classic D-pad as four discrete buttons, rather than a single, connected cross. That way when you turned the left Joy-Con on its side, it would have essentially the same layout as the right Joy-Con.

Amazon’s making a new Lord of the Rings MMO

Amazon Game Studios is co-developing a new massively multiplayer online game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The free-to-play game will be based on Tolkien’s literary trilogy, not the Peter Jackson-helmed films, and is unrelated to Amazon’s upcoming original TV series based on The Lord of the Rings that will be set in the Second Age.

Working with Amazon is Athlon Games and Leyou, which originally announced the project in 2018. Athlon’s Lord of the Rings MMO was announced for unspecified consoles and PC, and was described as “an online game set in the world of Middle-earth at a time long before the events of The Lord of the Rings, exploring lands, people and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe.”

Pokémon Nintendo Switch Lite hardware coming in November

Nintendo will release a special Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield-themed version of the newly announced Nintendo Switch Lite hardware in November. Like the standard Switch Lite, it will cost $199.99 — $100 less than the cost of a regular Nintendo Switch.

The Pokémon-themed Switch Lite will feature illustrations of new legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta, hence the system’s official name: the Nintendo Switch Lite Zacian and Zamazenta Edition. The system is a light gray and features cyan and magenta buttons and analog sticks. It will be released on Nov. 8, one week before Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield come to Switch on Nov. 15.

Nintendo unveils cheaper, smaller Switch Lite

Nintendo unveiled a new revision of its Switch hybrid game console today, the Nintendo Switch Lite, a smaller version of the system that’s focused on the platform’s portable side. The new Nintendo Switch Lite hardware will cost $199.99 and will be released on Sept. 20.

The smaller Nintendo Switch won’t feature detachable Joy-Con controllers. Instead, the new Switch is a compact, all-in-one piece of hardware that makes the Switch feel more like a Game Boy or Nintendo DS. The system also does not connect to a television for big screen play — it’s purely a handheld gaming device.

The trick to parenting Rocket League pros? Balance

The parents of professional esports players are not in the spotlight, but that doesn’t mean that they play a less important role in the larger esports community. In professional Rocket League, kids can start playing professionally as young as 15, so parents are likely to be much more involved. Whether it is a simple “good luck” text, cooking meals, or traveling around the world, these parents form the foundation of what enables these kids to play.

At the 2019 Rocket League Championship Series in Newark, New Jersey, Polygon chatted with three parents of competitors. Aimee Prior, also known as “Mama Torment,” is mom to Kyle “Torment” Storer, Rocket League World Champion and World Champion MVP in 2018. Jackelyn Matos and Eric Morales are the parents of Justin “Jstn” Morales. Justin is a pro player for NRG and known for his “zero-second goal,” arguably the best play in professional Rocket League.
