Blizzard co-founder Frank Pearce leaving studio after 28 years

Frank Pearce, one of the co-founders of Blizzard Entertainment, is leaving the game developer after 28 years at the company. Pearce announced his departure from Blizzard in a joint statement with J. Allen Brack, the president of the company.

“The time has come for me to step away from Blizzard and pass the torch to the next generation of leaders,” Pearce said on Friday. He recounted the formation of Blizzard, originally known as Silicon and Synapse, with co-founders Mike Morhaime and Allen Adham, saying, “Looking back, I know how incredibly fortunate I was to have been a part of what Blizzard has become.”

PlayStation Store has another flash sale, but no Mid-Year Sale ... yet?

We’re now three weeks past the time, last year, when the PlayStation Store held its Mid-Year Sale extravaganza, and the only thing we’ve seen so far is this month’s flash sale, with a library of titles comprised of a lot of Devolver Digital and Deep Silver works.

Sorry to get your hopes up, if your hopes aren’t up for Dead Island’s many editions, Homefront: The Revolution, the Shadow Warrior remakes or Hotline Miami. There are still some chestnuts among the savings offered — up to 75 percent off their list price, if you have a PlayStation Plus subscription. The sale lasts until Monday, July 22 at 11 a.m. EDT.

How to watch Fortnite’s mech-vs.-monster fight

If you’ve been paying attention during Fortnite season 9 you know that a major conflict is likely on the horizon. We may not know what this conflict might be, but we do know when it will happen. According to the in-game countdown clock, the fun action kicks off on Saturday July 20 at 2 p.m. ET.

Before this end-of-season event arrives, it’s worth looking back to see what we might be in for. At the end of season 8, a volcano erupted, launching a molten rock into the frozen heights of Polar Peak. The mountain cracked, unleashing a sea monster whose true form still hasn’t been revealed. Meanwhile — possibly in response to the sea monster? — a giant mech has been built over the last few weeks inside the volcano.

Overwatch patch buffs Moira’s Fade ability, nerfs Brigitte’s tankiness

Overwatch will play very differently in the future. Now, every team will be made up of two tanks, two supports, and two damage. (The original queue system will remain in the Arcade section of the Overwatch client.)

Because this is such a big change, we’re seeing a sweeping set of nerfs and buffs across the board to heroes like Brigitte, Wrecking Ball, Ashe, and Tracer. We’ve highlighted the biggest changes to characters you should know about, as well as the full patch notes.

Watch Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s frenetic new 2v2 Gunfight mode in action

Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward officially revealed a new multiplayer mode, Gunfight, for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare last week. It’s a 2v2, round-based mode where the objective is to eliminate (or outlast) your opponent, and loadouts don’t matter — the mode chooses players’ weapons for them.

On Thursday, Infinity Ward released new footage of Gunfight in action. It’s raw, 4K gameplay that offers a taste of what to expect from Modern Warfare’s new lightning-fast, pick-up-and-play, duos-only multiplayer mode. In just under six minutes, you’ll get a preview of the three announced maps (warehouse level King, dense forest map Pine, and Stack, a container yard set in a desert) and the types of guns on the menu.

How Gears 5’s Arcade mode works, and why it’s important

How Gears 5’s Arcade mode works, and why it’s important

The technical test for Gears 5 starts Friday, and with it comes an all-new game mode called Arcade. Polygon sat down with Ryan Cleven, The Coalition’s multiplayer design director, to chat about the design goals and what fans of the franchise should expect when they boot the game up for the first time on Xbox One.

Traditionally, the Gears of War franchise has had a very different style of gameplay from other multiplayer shooters. There’s the cover elements, of course, but stylistically the game relies on close-quarters engagements more than some others. Arcade is intended to ease in fans of multiplayer shooters who just might not otherwise be ready for that.

Marvel’s Avengers Comic-Con panel teases Ms. Marvel

Square Enix and developers from Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal gave Marvel fans a new look at their upcoming Avengers video game at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, and perhaps the biggest reveal was the appearance of Ms. Marvel (as Kamala Khan), who will play an unspecified role in Marvel’s Avengers.

In an extended gameplay look at Marvel’s Avengers, featuring characters like Hulk and Black Widow battling bad guys like Taskmaster, Kamala Khan — wearing a Captain Marvel t-shirt, no less — appears as a bystander to the action. Khan watches the action unfold in San Francisco on “A-Day,” a celebration of the Avengers that goes horribly wrong, and flees amid the chaos.

Overwatch is getting a new role queue system for ranked — and pro play

Overwatch is getting a new role queue system for ranked — and pro play

One of the worst experiences of Overwatch is getting into a lobby first, picking Pharah or D.Va, and then watching the rest of your team pick five more damage heroes. Blizzard is offering a new solution for this problem with a role queue system that lets you sign up as a tank, support, or damage in both quick and competitive play.

Currently, Overwatch’s lobbies are totally lawless, only limiting players to heroes that have yet to be picked. As a result, especially at lower levels of play, hero selection can be chaos. Players jostle over who gets to play DPS, pressure each other to play Mercy, and ultimately feel frustrated if they feel forced into tanking six games in a row.

Bungie: Shadowkeep’s Armor 2.0 system is about bringing stats back to Destiny 2

When Bungie releases Destiny 2: Shadowkeep later this year, it won’t just be about adding new missions and locations to the game. The Season of the Undying — which launches with Shadowkeep — also brings a rework to armor, a core system all players engage with.

Bungie’s shown off a bit of Armor 2.0 in its Out of the Shadows ViDoc, but most of what we saw was likely early development assets. Polygon sat down general manager Mark Noseworthy and franchise director Luke Smith to talk about stat-ifying Destiny 2.
