Watch the QuakeCon 2019 keynote here

id Software’s annual fan gathering, QuakeCon, is happening this weekend in Texas, where thousands of Quake and Doom fans have gathered to frag each other. And while the name of the con was born from Quake, this year’s event is really all about Doom.

On Friday, July 26, id Software and publisher Bethesda Softworks will reveal more about the next game in the Doom franchise: Doom Eternal. The QuakeCon keynote presentation will kick off at 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET, and promises a new look at Doom Eternal’s multiplayer mode, Battlemode. id initially revealed Battlemode, a two-versus-one (two demons against one Doom Slayer) multiplayer mode, at E3 2019.

Cat barfs in Twitch streamer’s PC, knocking him off air

Science has proven that nothing causes humans to act faster than the sound of a cat horking up a steamy cartridge of Fancy Feast. And yet this Twitch streamer was still too late to save his broadcast.

Joe, who streams as JadedBlue, was in the middle of Escape from Tarkov on Wednesday when his cat waltzed in and announced he had something important to share. “Hey, what’s the matter, buddy?” Joe says. Solid and liquid is the matter, as the cat’s lunch makes an encore appearance, followed by Twitch’s cheerful technical difficulties card.

GTA Online players won’t stop killing the casino valet

GTA Online players won’t stop killing the casino valet

Grand Theft Auto Online has introduced a new casino, where players can unlock fast race cars or a fancy penthouse apartment. That’s pretty cool, but none of it would be possible if it weren’t for this poor man. The Diamond Casino & Resort’s valet is having a bad time, and it’s all because of us players.

The Diamond Casino & Resort has been turned into an active war zone, because players are camping out and taking advantage of the influx of new players coming in to check out the new content. These rascals are setting up fields of proximity mines, sniping from a distance, or just going ahead and flying through the driveway on a rocket car that shoots missiles. It’s an absolute blood bath, but no one has it worse than the poor valet.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries delayed to December, now Epic Games Store exclusive

The launch of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, the first-person, simulator-style combat game set in the BattleTech universe, has been delayed once more. According to today’s announcement, Mercenaries will now launch on Dec. 10 as an Epic Games Store exclusive for a period of one year. Fans upset about either the delay or the shift from Valve’s Steam marketplace are being directed to an FAQ document for instructions on how to request a refund.

Mercenaries was originally slated to launch some time in 2018. In December of that year the team pushed it back to Sept. 2019. In today’s announcement, the team at Piranha says it now needs an additional few months “to put considerable more quality into the game while also giving us the time needed to localize to other languages and to put considerable effort into marketing the game’s release.”

Lil Nas X’s ‘Seoul Town Road’ featuring RM of BTS is a brilliant play for the Billboard charts

Lil Nas X is a chart genius.

The “Old Town Road” singer’s breakout hit has been perched for a record-tying 16 consecutive weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three primary reasons: the song is good; it’s regularly repurposed by other pieces of pop culture like the Rambo: Last Blood trailer; and Lil Nas X leverages remixes for chart success.

Discord is finally adding folders to bring some order to your gaming social life

One of Discord’s most requested features is finally being added. The company announced on Thursday afternoon that it is finally bringing server folders to Discord to help users keep their server list a little more organized. The announcement came via a short and odd YouTube video on Discord’s official channel.

Discord has long touted itself as one of the most popular places on the internet to build communities and interact with fellow members of a fandom. But organization has never been a strong-suit for the app. With dozens of servers to keep track of, navigating Discord could become a painful experience, but the new folders feature should help out a little bit.

Six teams to watch in Overwatch League stage 4

Stage 4 is set to change everything in the Overwatch League, with a new meta taking over: 2-2-2, made up of two damage, two support, and two tanks. This metagame is enforced by Blizzard, so teams have to roll with the punches.

So far, a few teams have been dominant throughout season 2. The new metagame might weaken the best teams. Teams who participated in the Stage 3 playoffs had less time to prepare and parse information about the new metagame — another factor that could destabilize the standings.

UK regulator: Loot boxes fall outside of current gambling law

The United Kingdom’s chief regulator of gambling told Parliament that loot boxes — specifically mentioning the FIFA series’ Ultimate Team card packs — are not considered gambling under current U.K. law, even if he has “significant concerns” about the games and their popularity with minor children.

Neil McArthur, the chief executive of the Gambling Commission, said that FIFA packs and loot boxes don’t have a formal way of monetizing their contents. U.K. gambling law is applicable only to prizes that are either money or have monetary value; in-game virtual items don’t, even if they are traded or even resold on black markets outside of the game.

Epic Games Store offers two free games this week: Moonlighter and This War of Mine

In June, the Epic Games Store upped its free game cadence, announcing that it would drop a new free title every week for the rest of 2019. During the last week of July, however, Epic is offering two free indie titles: Moonlighter and This War of Mine.

This is the first time the digital storefront has offered two free games at once, though it appears it won’t be the last. In a blog post explaining the move, Epic clarified that since the wartime survival game This War of Mine is rated M, younger players may be restricted from picking it up due to parental controls. The post confirms that, “whenever [Epic chooses] a M-rated or PEGI-18 title as a weekly free game, [it] will also offer another free game that will be more accessible to players of all ages.”

Digital card game SkyWeaver is part one of an ambitious plan to reinvent game economies

Horizon Blockchain Games is an unwieldy name for a studio, but it’s important to the studio founders to keep the word “blockchain” right there, front and center. The Toronto-based studio’s original offerings are very simple on the surface: a trading card game called SkyWeaver, made up of colorful fantasy environments and creative cards meant to perplex your opponent, and a platform for indie developer games called Arcadeum.

The question is whether that offering is strong enough to sell the rest of Horizon’s extensive ambitions.
