Final Fantasy 14 developers plan to condense the base game’s main story

Square Enix is working on condensing the main scenario quest for Final Fantasy 14’s base game, A Realm Reborn, the development team announced Wednesday during a livestreamed update. The Japanese-language livestream, the 53rd Live Letter from the Producer, was translated into English by a Square Enix forum community rep.

A Realm Reborn is known to have a story that can become a bit of a slog at times, especially the line of quests between the main part of the story and the start of Heavensward. The translation notes that the team said it’s working on making it “more compact,” alongside the New Game+ system, but there are no details on what that means exactly. This update will come with patch 5.3, which is months away.

Longtime developer Yuke’s is out of the WWE 2K picture

Yuke’s Co. is no longer developing WWE video games. 2K Games, the publisher of licensed WWE titles since 2013, confirmed on Tuesday that its in-house studio Visual Concepts is now solely in charge of the franchise, cutting out a developer whose history in making pro wrestling games goes back almost 20 years.

“We thank Yuke’s for their years of partnership and are excited to see what the Visual Concepts team brings to the franchise moving forward,” 2K said in a statement to Polygon. The news was first reported Tuesday by Video Games Chronicle.

Michael Warnecke, the ESA’s chief counsel of tech policy, made the announcement during a workshop on loot boxes hosted by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.

This new Galar Pokémon is a bong, and fans are going wild

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company released new Pokémon Sword and Shield revelations this morning, and it’s delightful to get to see the host of new Pokémon we’ll get to meet, collect, and use in combat.

We now know that we’ll be battling against the very enthusiastic Team Yell, and we’ll get to use a hangry little mouse in our battles. All of that is pretty cool, but there’s one new reveal that is pretty high on the list of best new details: the Galar regional form of Weezing, who is a bong.

Pokémon Sword and Shield’s new villains are ... Team Yell?

Every Pokémon game has a group that’s up to no good, but it seems that developer Game Freak is trying to make its villain topical this time around. Today’s new Pokémon trailer revealed Marnie, a goth woman who will be your rival. She’s apparently big enough that she has a rabid fanbase who will fight for her, and they’re known as Team Yell.

How devoted is Team Yell? Well, for one thing, the dudes literally carry around Marnie posters. It’s all a touch weird and uncomfortable, but it fits with today’s world of influencers and stans. Who hasn’t gotten attacked on Twitter for saying something untoward about a celebrity?

New Sword and Shield Pokémon Morpeko, can get hangry

The new trailer for Pokémon Sword and Shield shows off new rivals, new Pokémon forms, and most importantly, a new Pokémon named Morpeko.

Morpeko seems to be the cute rodent Pokémon of the Galar region, akin to Pachirisu, Dedenne, Plusle, and Minun. It’s a cute little hamster with round pink cheeks, but one thing makes it different from the other rodents: It gets hangry.

When Morpeko is in “full belly mode,” it’s yellow, brown, and black, but when it turns into “hangry mode,” it has a black, purple, and red color-scheme. This is due to its ability, Hunger Switch, which turns its signature move, Aura Wheel, from electric-type to dark-type.

Pokémon Sword and Shield adds new Galarian forms of old Pokémon

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company revealed new details on Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield today, including that some returning Pokémon will have new Galarian forms and evolutions, including a very good, very British Weezing, who now sports a polluted “mustache” and a top hat/smokestack extremity.

Two other Pokémon are also confirmed to have Galarian forms: Zigzagoon and Linoone, both of which are now black and white, and looking a bit more like they’ve joined a furry KISS cover band. Linoone also has a new evolution, Obstagoon, which further proves the de Rochefort Pokémon evolution theory known as Four Legs Fluff, Two Legs Buff.

Rocket League won’t have loot boxes later this year

A change is coming to the Rocket League store later this year, one foreshadowed by fellow Epic Games Store title Fortnite. Epic Games recently removed loot boxes from its Save the World mode. Now that change is coming to Rocket League—which Epic now owns—as well. All paid, randomized loot boxes, known as Crates, will be removed from the Rocket League storefront.

A new system will be added that “shows the exact items you’re buying in advance.” It’s not clear whether the storefront will primarily move over to individual items or bundles, but more information including timelines and rollout specifics will be released in the coming months.

Some of Destiny 2’s activities are about to get less grindy

In a blog post, Bungie announced that Destiny 2 patch 2.5.2.2 will solve major issues with some of the game’s activities — namely currently frustrating activities that do not dole enough enough rewards. The studio also detailed the updated Destiny schedule for the rest of August and September.

Reckoning and Gambit Prime weapons are getting a higher drop rate, and players will have bad-luck protection to ensure runs have appropriate drop rates. This should make going for your dream Spare Rations hand cannon a bit easier. The Reckoning is also getting easier, so random groups will have less trouble working together.
