Spelunky 2 delayed beyond 2019

Roguelike platformer Spelunky 2 won’t make its previously scheduled 2019 release date. Developer Derek Yu broke the bad news on Twitter, saying that the follow-up to the original Spelunky simply needs more time.

“Unfortunately, I don’t think we’re going to get to release Spelunky 2 this year,” Yu said on his Mossmouth Twitter account. “Development is still going well and we’re not far off target, but the density and detail of the game is demanding more time.”

World of Warcraft Classic may miss one crucial element: the drama

I still vividly remember zoning out during Blackwing Lair, my eyes glazing over as the screaming bout over Ventrilo intensified. We were stuck on the infamous Vaelastrasz fight in Blackwing Lair, and our guild leader and priest class leader disagreed on how to handle part of the fight.

There was just one complication: Those two players were married, and 38 other players had to sit and listen to everything else they disagreed on, which included distribution of domestic duties, appropriate time to recover after surgery, and other deeply personal issues.

Riot Games steps in to find buyer for Echo Fox’s League of Legends franchise

After months of back and forth, Riot Games and Echo Fox have come to an agreement to terminate Echo Fox’s participation in the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS), Riot’s North American League of Legends league, the company announced on Wednesday morning. As part of the termination, Riot will find a buyer for the newly vacated LCS franchise spot, with a bulk of the sale going to Echo Fox.

This will be the first time that one of the LCS’s original franchises has left the league since franchising began. In 2017, Riot partnered with 10 esports organizations as permanent franchises that would participate in the LCS. Riot spent several months reviewing applications and determining which organizations would be a good fit for the league. The original LCS franchise spots were then sold to the select 10 organizations for $10 million each.

PUBG’s latest patch is full of small features players have wanted for years

The latest patch for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds just launched on the game’s test servers with a few long-requested features. Just a few weeks ago, developer PUBG Corp. released PUBG’s new season along with the updated version of Erangel in one of the game’s biggest patches ever. This time around, the patch isn’t quite so drastic and is more focused on smaller quality-of-life improvements for the game.

One big addition this patch makes that isn’t quality-of-life-focused is the addition of thunderstorms to Erangel. The map’s new overcast weather setting will make the map darker and more treacherous. In matches where the map is overcast, the weather will change dynamically over the course of play and can shift between cloudy, windy, foggy, hail, light rain, or a full-on thunderstorm. Each of these different weather types will have different visuals and sounds that change how much of the map players can hear or see.

Bubble Bobble sequel brings four player co-op to Switch

Bub, Bob and Bubble Bobble are coming back with a sequel to Taito’s light-hearted, 33-year-old platforming franchise. Bubble Bobble 4 Friends will launch in Europe on Nov. 19, followed by North America in the first three months of 2020. The game is exclusive to Nintendo Switch.

The game is a fresh look at the Bubble Bobble format — cooperative play in puzzle-platforming stages — with a first: four-player multiplayer is supported. It’s also, according to Taito, the company’s first internally developed title since returning to the consumer market. The most recent Taito-made console game was 2010’s mobile/console crossover, Space Invaders Infinity Gene, based on the seminal shoot-’em-up.

Here’s a six-minute look at Doom Eternal’s multiplayer Battlemode

Doom Eternal will launch with Battlemode, a 2v1 multiplayer mode, that aims to provide single-player’s gory, fast fun in a multiplayer setting. id Software lifted the lid on Battlemode at QuakeCon last month, but if you missed it then, the developer offers this six-minute overview of how Doom multiplayer is changing for Eternal.

In Battlemode, players control of one of five Demons, each with special abilities, health pools, and weapons. id’s video overview shows off three of the playable demons, who will be tasked with taking out a player-controlled Slayer. Victory comes only when the Slayer kills both player-controlled Demons before one can respawn, or when the Slayer is dead.

No Man’s Sky’s Beyond update is bringing some major quality of life improvements

No Man’s Sky’s Beyond update is bringing some massive new features to the game. But while things like the new and improved social system and the virtual reality support are likely to be the big focus, the patch also includes some gameplay improvements that should make even the smallest moments more enjoyable.

Perhaps the biggest change is the upgrade to players’ inventory space. While inventory space used to be hard to come by, Hello Games has relaxed those limitations by letting players carry a “near-unlimited” amount of mined materials.

Sea of Thieves’ monthly updates will leave their marks on the world

Rare has released four major content expansions for Sea of Thieves, a handful of weekly events, and a massive anniversary patch. But Sea of Thieves is now gearing up for year two, with a new update landing on the second Wednesday of each month.

The first update, Black Powder Stashes, offered a new voyage type that didn’t do much to change the game. Today’s update, Dark Relics, adds another voyage type, as well as a few permanent changes. In the future, players can expect these updates to continually shift the world of Sea of Thieves, containing everything from new Tall Tales to smaller, more experimental fixes.
