Steam review bomb stops game from cutting homophobic content

It’s been a whirlwind month for old school shooter Ion Fury. First, the Voidpoint-developed and 3D Realms-published game made headlines after players discovered that the creators made offensive comments against trans people, “social justice warriors,” and feminism in general. Folks also shared images of an in-game Ion Fury item labeled “OGAY” (apparently a spoof of “Olay”) and a secret area where the words “fag bag” appear. In response, Ion Fury’s publisher apologized, promised to donate to charity, and to edit out the controversial material inside the game.

And now the developer and publisher of Ion Fury have walked it back.

How World of Warcraft Classic devs will right the wrongs of the 2004 launch

How World of Warcraft Classic devs will right the wrongs of the 2004 launch

World of Warcraft will never be the same as its vanilla launch fifteen years ago, despite Blizzard’s careful devotion to bringing every aspect of the original game back.

The character I rolled during my vanilla experience is now the same age I was when I started playing her; she’d be in high school now. It’ll never be possible to recapture the magic of vanilla, but World of Warcraft Classic is set to become its own, fascinating beast. In a world where dozens of MMORPGs have risen up in the wake of vanilla World of Warcraft and then faltered, and World of Warcraft itself is hardly recognizable, what sort of cultural footprint will Classic leave?

Wichita cops start flagging potential swatting addresses

Police in Wichita, Kansas — scene of a deadly swatting hoax in 2017 — will now mark addresses in their 911 system where residents feel they may be targets of that kind of dangerous online harassment.

The Wichita Eagle reported on Friday that police began soliciting these alert notices this week. Residents may request a form if they feel they are or may be a target of a swatting attempt. “Anyone can be the target of swatting, but victims are typically associated with the tech industry, video game industry, or the online broadcasting community,” Wichita Police Department Officer Paul Cruz said in a news release.

The International crowns its first two-time champion

OG is the first two-time — and back-to-back — champion of The International Dota 2 championship, following a 3-1 rout of Team Liquid in Shanghai on Sunday.

OG took a grand prize of $15,609,384 for its triumph, which follows last year’s Cinderella run from open qualification to world champions. This time, OG returned as an invited team, posted the best record in group play and was a top seed for the main event. OG swept through the upper bracket to dispatch Team Liquid — which itself had only lost one game out of the lower bracket — in four.

Battlefield 5’s 5v5 competitive mode is ditched

Battlefield 5’s competitive 5v5 mode has been canceled, EA DICE announced. The studio said that their ongoing efforts in quality assurance and new content delivery are more important.

In a post to Electronic Arts’ website on Thursday, senior producer Ryan McArthur noted that the game already has competitive modes of play, which suggests that combat at a much smaller scale than the Battlefield franchise is known for wasn’t that important to players, either.

Dota 2 gets another new hero: Void Spirit

Dota 2’s newest character is one whose existence fans have speculated on for years: Void Spirit, who joins his three elemental spirit brothers in the game this fall.

Void Spirit’s skills aren’t known; he was only shown in a teaser video before materializing on stage at The International 2019 in Shanghai. He wields a bladed staff radiating some kind of dark energy, and appears to be capable of teleporting his way around the map.

Roblox and the Wild West of teenage scammers

Roblox and the Wild West of teenage scammers

Rez was 16 years old and bored when he bought Stateview Correctional Facilities, a prison simulation game on Roblox. For $17.50, Rez gained access to a community of 300 people. Two months later, Stateview Correctional Facilities had exploded to 100,000 players, and was making around $5,000 a week. That’s when everything came crashing down.

Rez’s story, however, is not just about his rise to popularity on Roblox or his subsequent fall. This is a story about a now enormous platform that transforms young kids into game developers, and the surprising drama that the job entails. It is a story about a teenager gaining too much power over a group of people, and not knowing what to do with it. It’s a story about growing up on the internet, and having all your embarrassing stumbles unfold in front of an audience.

Before Tetris 99 popularized battle royale Tetris, there was Jstris

Before Tetris 99 popularized battle royale Tetris, there was Jstris

Tetris 99— a battle-royale style Tetris game for the Nintendo Switch— turned the classic game into a competitive, 99-person frenzy. But before there was Tetris 99, there was Jstris. Like Tetris 99, the browser-based Jstris hosts a live lobby where people play simultaneously against each other. The website doesn’t host 99 players at one time — its rooms usually have around 50 players at a time — but it is a battle royale, last-man-standing format in Tetris form none-the-less.

At first, Jstris looks like a home-brew project; a game that already existed converted for a browser. However, the website wasn’t a rip-off of Tetris 99. In fact, its online last-man-standing mode predated Tetris 99 by over a year and an a half. This is because the ‘battle royale’ style of playing came about organically as the developers at Jstris responded to the preferences of its community.

Epic Games has made another attempt to balance Fornite’s controversial mech

Epic Games has made another attempt to balance Fornite’s controversial mech

Players have argued over Fortnite’s B.R.U.T.E. mech ever since it was added at the beginning of season 10. But instead of backing down and removing the mech, Epic Games is working to balance the vehicle so that everyone can enjoy it. The latest patch is the next step toward that goal.

The updated mech will shoot fewer rockets, and give players more time to respond to each individual rocket by increasing the time they take to fire. The mech will no longer gain materials just by walking through buildings and trees; they’ll have to be gathered the old-fashioned way.
