Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order shows the fallout of Order 66

When creating a new video game, there are plenty of things for producers, directors, writers, artists, and designers to consider. Who are the characters? Where are they going? What are the rules of their universe? That’s a daunting enough challenge for any team, and it gets even harder when trying to carve out a memorable original story with over four decades of lore behind it.

That’s exactly what Respawn Entertainment has to contend with in making Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which comes to consoles and PC on Nov. 15.

Long-awaited puzzler gets surprise release date on Epic Games Store, Apple Arcade

Manifold Garden, the surreal, gravity-agnostic puzzler in development for nearly seven years, has a launch date at last: Tomorrow! It’s coming to the Epic Games Store and Apple Arcade on Oct. 18, and will also be available for PlayStation 4 later.

Developer William Chyr tweeted the news yesterday; based on the announcement video, you’d be correct to compare it to an M.C. Escher sketch or the movie Inception. We spent time with Manifold Garden at E3 2016; at the time it challenged players to work within certain constraints, such as color-coded items, to solve a puzzle. Gravity is of little consideration in Manifold Garden’s world, where down can become up and up can become sideways on a whim.

Speedrunner offers $700 bounty for Simpsons game solution

You need 14,500 coins to fully complete The Simpsons: Hit and Run, all of which are necessary in buying vehicles and outfits needed to move forward in the game. Coins are collected throughout the game as players investigate an alien invasion, but for speedrunners, there’s no time to meander about Springfield. Hit and Run’s world record speedrun is just over three hours long — but one player thinks there’s still a way to get a faster time.

And to do that, he needs to find a faster way to collect coins. Hit and Run record-holder Cameron, known best online as Liquid WIFI, told Polygon that in the fastest, 100 percent completion run of the game, he grinds coins for 20 minutes, in one session. He’s spent a lot of time playing the game and figuring out its secrets, but the coins still elude him. So he’s doing something about it: giving others an incentive to try to break the game. A $700 incentive. “Anyone who discovers a way to skip the section of the run will be paid for it,” Liquid WIFI told Polygon.

Stranger Things ignited a gold rush for old Dungeons & Dragons books

In the spring of 2019, a customer brought a red cardboard box covered in dust to the Minneapolis-based games store Heroic Goods and Games. Owner Paul Zenisek recognized the logo stenciled at the top: This was an early edition (Set 1: Basic Rules) of the original role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons. The box was in astounding condition, the included dice still sealed in a baggie, and since Zenisek was already struggling to keep modern-day 5th-edition D&D books in stock due to raucous demand, he decided to check online marketplaces like eBay to see what this vintage copy was worth. After a quick survey, he offered $60 for it — half of the $120 price it sold for in the store a scant two days later.

“The seller was pretty stunned, honestly,” Zenisek says. “They were cleaning out their basement and thought, ‘Maybe this weird store will buy it.’ I think they would’ve thrown it in the trash otherwise.”

Fruit Ninja studio’s first game in three years comes from a game jam, too

Halfbrick Studios, makers of Jetpack Joyride, Fruit Ninja, and other hits will publish its first game in three years next month. It’s called Magic Brick Wars and it’s a multiplayer, deck-building strategy game.

Magic Brick Wars features the Raskulls characters from their eponymous 2010 Xbox Live Arcade game. A news release said the new title grew out of a week-long internal game jam, somewhat the same process that created Fruit Ninja.

Sea of Thieves is now haunted by spooky skeletons for Halloween

Sea of Thieves now operates on a monthly update schedule, with Rare putting new spins on the world on the second Wednesday of every month. Sometimes, this includes lovely things, like new pets or fun voyages. This month, players have access to Fort of the Damned, an update that changes up skeleton forts.

Players will be able to pick up special voyages to acquire ritual skulls from enemies. They will also be able to collect the Flames of Fate, a new lantern flame color that players can collect upon dying in certain ways (shark, player damage, volcano, lighting, skeleton, and snake venom).

College Hearthstone team that held ‘Free Hong Kong’ sign banned for 6 months

Three Hearthstone players from American University in Washington, D.C. have received six month bans for holding a “Free Hong Kong, boycott Blizz” sign during their Hearthstone Collegiate Championship match on Oct. 8.

Casey Chambers, a 19-year-old Hearthstone player, posted the notice to Twitter on Oct. 16. A Hearthstone admin wrote that “Every Voice Matters at Blizzard” — it’s one of the company’s published values — but that the official broadcast is off-limits for these statements.

November’s Pokémon Go Community Day will feature the monkey fire-type Pokémon, Chimchar.

The Community Day will take place on Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m, local time. During this time, Chimchar will spawn much more frequently, and players will have an increased chance to nab its Shiny form.

While the exclusive move isn’t listed yet on the announcement page, it’s very likely going to be Blast Burn, which is the same move all the other fire-type starters learned on their Community Days. (Niantic, you ain’t fooling anyone!)
