Despite controversy, Pokémon Sword and Shield broke a Nintendo sales record

Nintendo sold 6 million copies of Pokémon Sword and Shield, the company announced Thursday morning. It’s a number that’s broken Nintendo sales records, meaning Sword and Shield are “among the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch games of all time.” In the U.S., more than 2 million copies were sold “in the first two days” after its launch.

It’s the “highest-grossing launch of any Pokémon game,” Nintendo said.

Out now in 25 countries, Minecraft Earth is taking a very soft launch approach

Minecraft Earth’s early access launch is now available in 25 countries. It’s been a quiet, understated launch, a long way from the initial frenzy that greeted a similar game, Pokémon Go, in 2016. But publisher Microsoft says it’s playing the long game.

The mobile augmented reality game’s initial rollout began in Iceland and New Zealand back in the middle of October, with the United States joining last week. Western Europe was added on Tuesday. Other countries, including Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, and South Korea, have also joined.

Pokémon Go is bringing back all Community Day Pokémon in December

Pokémon Go is closing out the year by bringing back all the Community Day Pokémon back for one special weekend.

On Dec. 14 and 15, all the Community Day Pokémon from this year will spawn in the wild more frequently from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. in your local time zone. Pokémon from 2018 Community Days will spawn in raids during this time period.

Pokémon Sword and Shield has an even rarer type of shiny to collect

Pokémon Sword and Shield has an even rarer type of shiny to collect

Everyone knows that Shiny Pokémon are supposed to be rare — there’s only a 1 in 4,096 chance you’ll find a monster in a special color, unless you use a special method to increase your odds. But Pokémon Sword and Shield has introduced another type of Shiny to the mix, which, if found, will enter the battle with a slightly different type of animation.

Players are calling these ultra-rare monsters “square Shinies,” because their animations appear diamond-like, rather than the typical sparkles that you see for most Shinies. According to hackers who have looked at the files, there’s only a 1 in 16 chance your Shiny will be a square Shiny. Which, statistically speaking, means most people stumbling onto a Shiny will find the standard sparkles, not the square ones.

Switch fishing game turns your Joy-Con into a futuristic fishing rod

Bandai Namco’s next game is a Japan-only launch, but we’re tossing it up here — casting about, you might say — because of the nifty peripheral it includes: a fishing reel, which is attached to the side of a Joy-Con controller.

Granted, the premise of Bakutsuri Hunters sounds pretty rad, too: use your futuristic fishing rod to hunt down and land some mecha-sharks. But it’s a heck of a lot cooler when you’re using this contraption:

Pokémon fans are sick of trolls bringing Magikarp to raids

Pokémon fans are sick of trolls bringing Magikarp to raids

Picture this: You’re queuing up for one of the toughest types of battles in Pokémon Sword and Shield. You take time and care in picking a monster with a high enough level, move set, and type advantage. You get into the raid, ready to take on whatever big baddy the game throws at you.

And then you notice that one of your teammates has brought a Magikarp to the arena. You know — the “useless” water type that just flops around everywhere? That guy.

Hilariously, this seems to be happening to nearly everyone playing Pokémon Sword and Shield based on social media posts, especially for folks playing offline. Magikarp appears to be a favored pick for NPC combatants entering raids. The good news is that Magikarp don’t just use Splash over and over again to no avail: Instead, Magikarp tend to know the move Hyper Beam, which is both powerful and unexpected. Not that this ends up making a huge difference, sometimes.

Toyota Supra returns to street racing in Forza Horizon 4

The Toyota Supra — a street-racing icon that returned this July after a 17-year hiatus — comes to Forza Horizon 4 next month in a free title update. The model has been missing from several big-name racing video games since 2017’s Gran Turismo Sport launched.

Turn10’s official Forza Motorsport account yesterday tweeted out the news, saying the 1998 Toyota Supra RZ will be included in Forza Horizon 4’s series 17 update on Dec. 12.

Borderlands 3’s first campaign DLC releases in December

Borderlands 3’s first campaign add-on launches Dec. 19. Moxxi’s Heist of the Handsome Jackpot brings a bit of Ocean’s Eleven to Pandora, as the name implies.

Players will need to have advanced far enough in Borderlands 3’s main story that they have access to Sanctuary 3. The expansion will take them to the late Handsome Jack’s lavish resort, where they’ll battle it out against Hyperion security and “crazed casino-goers” to get to the jackpot, which includes “all-new Legendary loot” and a safe crammed full of Eridium.
