Splitgate’s new season has already started

Splitgate has technically been out for over two years, but its recent move onto console and into open beta has revived the free-to-play shooter, raising its profile on Twitch and elsewhere. In fact, two years after its early access release it’s finally getting new seasons of content. The first season, dubbed season 0, has already started and was announced on Wednesday during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live presentation.

Splitgate has had battle passes before, but this new opt-in is full of cosmetic items for players to unlock. It’s accompanied by a new patch, which contains with a few much needed balance and quality-of-life tweaks. One thing players will likely notice right away about the cosmetics in that they’re significantly better than the ones developer 1047 Games has previously released.

Gamescom Opening Night Live: the biggest announcements

Host Geoff Keighley brought a slew of news, trailers, and updates to Gamescom 2021’s Opening Night Live kickoff show in a two-hour livestream on Wednesday. There was a lot to digest, and you can catch up with it all in Polygon’s StoryStream, but if you just want the biggest highlights, well, here they are.

There’s a new Saints Row — and it’s just called Saints Row. Developer Volition showed off the look and feel of Saints Row, coming in 2022, in a debut trailer at Gamescom 2021. The new Saints Row is coming Feb. 25, 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC via the Epic Games Store.

Saints Row reboot is ‘more grounded,’ ‘not grimdark,’ Volition promises

It should come as no surprise that the next Saints Row, launching in February, is a complete reboot of Volition’s open-world crime spree franchise. As fun as it was to make, the studio realized they may have painted themselves into a narrative corner, eight years after the thoroughly surreal Saints Row 4 widened the gangland canon to include an alien invasion, Vice President Keith David, the Dubstep Gun, and the author Jane Austen.

“When we would talk about Saints Row 4, we would talk about how you were coming from the crack house, to the penthouse, to the White House,” Jim Boone, Volition’s chief creative officer, mused in a preview livestream two weeks ago. “By the time you’re done with Saints Row 4, you are the ruler of the galaxy. If you were to think, ‘Where would we take it from there?’ — we went to Hell and conquered that, even, right? So there truly isn’t anywhere to go past that.”

Amazon’s New World MMO open beta begins in September

Amazon’s New World has been delayed multiple times since 2020, but it appears the Sept. 28 release date announced in August will be the one that sticks. During Gamescom’s Opening Night Live broadcast, Amazon announced the open beta will run Sept. 9-12.

A closed beta was held back in July. Delays for New World began in April 2020, following problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. New World is an MMO, for Windows PC, where players colonize a fictional continent somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. Players in groups of 50 or so can battle one another in massive fights.

Here’s everything new in Death Stranding’s Director’s Cut

Death Stranding: Director’s Cut was announced at Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest in June, so it makes sense that even closer look would be revealed at Geoff Keighley’s Gamescom Opening Night Live. It’s just what besties like Hideo Kojima and Keighley do.

In the extended look at the Director’s Cut, developers shared new delivery tools, like a cargo launcher and boots that decrease fall damage. Buddy Bot, too, was shown in more detail, a new feature that lets Sam Porter Bridges carry more stuff while he just rides along. There’s also now a firing range where players can practice with weapons — and “train and compete” for high scores.

Fall Guys gets a Disney’s The Jungle Book crossover early next month

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout showed up at Tuesday’s Gamescom: Opening Night Live event and revealed a bizarre crossover: Disney's The Jungle Book skins are coming to Fall Guys. But these skins aren’t modeled after the modern adaptations, they’re pulled, hauntingly, from the animated movie of your childhood.

Starting in early September, players can pick up skins based on Mowgli, Shere Khan, Baloo, and King Louie. Like all bean skins, The Jungle Book crossover skins feature a top and bottom, with the top featuring full versions of the animated character’s heads.

Horizon Forbidden West launching in February 2022

Horizon Forbidden West, the sequel to 2017’s hit action game Horizon Zero Dawn, will launch Feb. 18, 2022, on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, developer Guerrilla Games announced during Gamescom: Opening Night Live.

This represents a bit of a delay — Guerrilla and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment had previously said they planned to release the game in the second half of 2021. Sony will begin taking pre-orders on Sept. 2.

DokeV is an open-world MMO that feels like Pokémon meets Splatoon

There are plenty of video games where you collect creatures, but there’s not much that looks quite like DokeV, a new open-world MMO from developer Pearl Abyss. Instead, the game looks like a mashup of a bunch of other game elements, like Monster Hunter, Pokémon, and even Splatoon.

A four-minute trailer at Gamescom 2021 showcased the DokeV’s crowded city world and a few other settings. Throughout it, cartoon children zoom around on skateboards, rollerblades, and gliders; fight in chaotic battles with absolutely bizarre, colorful weapons; and ride creatures that look like llamas. Plus, it’s backed by a very catchy sound.

Outlast Trials reveals a bloody new trailer, teases cooperative gameplay at Gamescom

Outlast Trials, the third entry in the bloody first-person survival horror game from the team at Red Barrels, revealed its first gameplay trailer on Wednesday. It arrived as part of the Gamescom Opening Night Live streaming event by Geoff Keighley.

The original Outlast was a PlayStation 4 exclusive released in 2013. Its success led to a sequel, Outlast 2, released in 2017. Red Barrels is still in control of the franchise, and has an intimidating new wrinkle for dedicated fans; cooperative multiplayer for up to four players.
