10 lovely-looking indie games to look out for in 2020

Every year, an event called Day of the Devs in San Francisco showcases some of the most promising indie games currently in development. This year, the event’s seventh, was no exception. The dozens of games on display show how indie gaming remains a source of originality and artistry.

“These games are so important to the health of the overall industry,” says Double Fine CEO and Day of the Devs organizer Tim Schafer. “You can see their ideas filtering back into AAA games. They keep everyone in the industry focused on new ideas. These are great games that deserve to be seen and played.”

Why the Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons were almost canceled in 2019

Enormous character balloons became a staple of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1927, when silent-era cartoon feline Felix the Cat first took the skies above New York City’s west side for the first time. These days, floating replicas of everyone from Snoopy to Goku to the Pillsbury Doughboy appear between the floats and Broadway musical pop-ups.

But this year, the fleet was nearly grounded. As of just a few hours before the show, the 2019 Thanksgiving parade, which airs at 9 a.m. EST on NBC, was set to run without a single balloon.

EarthNight and Black Friday sales are the highlights of this week’s Nintendo eShop additions

The latest batch of games has arrived in the Nintendo eShop. Since this month’s offerings coincide with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, there are also quite a few discounts coming to the eShop over the next week.

The highlight of this slate is the painterly platformer EarthNight. It takes place in a distant future where humans struggle to survive after a dragon-based apocalypse — mostly by skydiving? EarthNight will be available on Nintendo Switch through the eShop starting on Dec. 3.

Overwatch 2’s story missions are ‘a more traditional way’ to build the canon

Overwatch 2’s lead writer is touting the game’s new, four-player story-based missions as a “more traditional way to tell a story in the Overwatch universe,” a job that has been done by trailers, seasonal events and, well, headcanon since its 2016 launch.

In an interview with PlayStation Blog, lead writer Michael Chu said Overwatch 2 will have “a complete story with beginning, middle, and end.

Red Dead Redemption 2 comes to Steam next week

Red Dead Redemption 2 launches on Steam on Dec. 5, about a month after its PC debut on three other digital storefronts.

The game doesn’t yet have a Steam page, but it’ll probably be full price when it arrives. Red Dead Redemption 2 uses the new Rockstar Launcher regardless of where it has been sold (whether the Epic Games Store, GOG.com or elsewhere) and presumably that will be the case for Steam as well. We’ve reached out to Rockstar Games to verify anyway.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint’s first raid involves a mysterious jungle computer

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint has more than its fair share of issues. But for the community that has stuck with the game, there’s a bit of new content coming out this week, when the game gets its first raid. Ubisoft released a trailer for the raid on Tuesday afternoon, and while much of the content is still shrouded in mystery, we do have a few hints about what to expect.

The first raid for Breakpoint is called Project Titan, and it appears to have something to do with technology on run amok. In the trailer for Project Titan we can see a squad of Ghosts slowly approaching what looks like a computer that’s encased in glass, or crystal of some kind.

Madden gets its fastest QB ever, and a video game legend congratulates him

Lamar Jackson, the fleet quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, is rated 96 in speed in the latest Madden NFL 20 update — making him the fastest quarterback in Madden history, surpassing one of the greatest video game athletes of all time.

That would be Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons in Madden NFL 2004, remembered alongside Jeremy Roenick and Tecmo Bo Jackson as one of the last great overpowered video game athletes. Sixteen years of live service and weekly roster updates have since made superhuman players obsolete, as rating science has gotten better and the ability to rerate and rebalance the game has sifted out anomalies.

Death Stranding’s tiny text will be fixed in upcoming patch

One of Death Stranding’s shortcomings, the tiny typeface that permeates the game’s menus and user interface, will be addressed in an upcoming patch for the game, developer Kojima Productions said on Twitter. According to the studio, players will soon have “the ability to increase text size.”

Kojima Productions said that’s just one player request it’s addressing; the option to dispose of individual vehicles is another. Those changes will be addressed sometime in December.

PlayStation Plus offers Titanfall 2, Monster Energy Supercross in December

PlayStation Plus subscribers will get access to two action-packed games this December: Respawn Entertainment’s first-person shooter Titanfall 2 and Milestone’s motorcycle racing game Monster Energy Supercross — The Official Videogame. Both PlayStation 4 games will be available as part of PlayStation Plus starting Dec. 3.

Titanfall 2 was released in October 2016, and delivered one of the best sequels and one of the best single-player shooter campaigns this decade. It was one of Polygon’s games of the year for 2016, thanks to its focus on gameplay-first set pieces and thrilling, tightly designed campaign. If you only know the Titanfall universe thanks to Apex Legends, Titanfall 2 is worth downloading from PS Plus. (And if you’re enjoying Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, you’ll get more of that Respawn single-player flavor right here.)
