Modern Warfare revives Grind, the risky alternative to Kill Confirmed

Infinity Ward has added a new game mode to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that combines the tactical pace of objective modes with the frantic running and gunning of Team Deathmatch. The mode is called Grind and, while it has been in Call of Duty games in the past, this is its first appearance in 2019’s Modern Warfare.

Grind first appeared in Call of Duty: Ghosts, and since then has cropped up in other games in the series, sometimes under alternate names like Stockpile and Fracture. The mode is a combination of the series’ Kill Confirmed and Hardpoint modes, in which enemies drop dog tags when they are killed by opposing players.

Blade Runner artist and futurist designer Syd Mead dies at 86

Industrial designer and artist Syd Mead has died at age 86 due to complications from lymphoma cancer, Polygon can confirm.

Mead is best known as a concept artist on science fiction films like Blade Runner. After working in the motor vehicle industry for some time, Mead worked as a production illustrator on Star Trek: The Motion Picture. One of his most cited work, however, was the futuristic design he employed for Blade Runner — the version of Los Angeles he designed would become iconic for its vision of the future.

The Witcher is having a massive comeback on Steam

This week, more than four years after the game originally launched, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has more concurrent players on Steam than ever before. The news comes from Marcin Momot, global community lead for developer CD Projekt Red. Player data comes courtesy of SteamCharts, which pulls information from Valve’s publicly available API.

Previously the all-time highest concurrent player count for The Witcher 3 came at launch, on May 1, 2015. That’s when SteamCharts says some 92,268 players logged in. As of publication, the new all-time high is 94,601, which was set within the last 24 hours. The role-playing game has also cracked Steam’s top 10, coming in as the eighth most-played game at time of publication.

Red Dead Redemption PC fan project shut down following lawsuit

Take-Two Interactive has shut down a Red Dead Redemption fan project after filing a lawsuit against developer Johnathon Wyckoff on Dec. 26. Wyckoff is the creator behind a fan project called “Red Dead Redemption Damned Enhancement Project,” which was reportedly intended to “[enhance] graphics and visuals in Take-Two’s Red Dead Redemption game” and make it playable on Windows PC — “a platform for which Take-Two itself has not yet released the Read Dead Redemption [sic] game,” according to the lawsuit.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was released on PC earlier this year, but the original game never came to personal computers, just consoles. (The only way to play Red Dead Redemption on PC was through Sony’s streaming service, PlayStation Now.)

Sony has a patent for a new PlayStation controller

On Dec. 26, Sony was approved for a patent on a new type of PlayStation controller. The patent is on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) database, but it isn’t quite clear what Sony intends to do with the controller.

The design itself is similar to the familiar DualShock 4 design that most players are used to with the PlayStation 4. The new controller has the same layout for its face buttons, directional pad, and analog sticks. The only real departure on the front of the controller is that there’s no PlayStation button visible on the patent design.

These were the best-selling games on Steam in 2019

It’s the end of another year, and Valve has once again let the world know which games on Steam sold the most over the last 12 months. Steam’s Best of 2019 event broke down some of the platform’s best-selling new and returning games, the most played games, and the most popular games to leave early access this year. It also put most all of them on sale.

If you’ve looked at this list in past years, a few of the games on the best-sellers list won’t be much of a surprise for you. Games like Grand Theft Auto 5, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and Rainbow Six: Siege all sit near the top of the charts. Perhaps one of the year’s most surprising top sellers is Destiny 2, which only came to the platform in October. It’s also worth noting that these top sellers are measured in terms of gross revenue earned this year, which is why a few free to play titles are on the list.

Rare ‘Nintendo Play Station’ prototype going up for auction

Rare ‘Nintendo Play Station’ prototype going up for auction

There’s an alternate timeline in some other universe where the PlayStation is a Nintendo product. In the early ’90s, Sony Computer Entertainment engineer — and later chairman and CEO of the unit — Ken Kutaragi created the Super Nintendo sound chip, which sparked another collaboration between the two companies: a disc-based console addition. Despite disagreements on both sides, Kutaragi designed the console, and a couple hundred prototypes were produced of the Super NES CD-ROM System, colloquially known as the SNES-CD or Nintendo Play Station.

For a long time, no one was even sure one of these still existed; it’s likely that most of them were destroyed. But one exists, owned by Terry Diebold, who bought the unit in a blind auction when the company he worked for, Advanta Corporation, went bankrupt. The SNES-CD was in a box of stuff once owned by former Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Olaf Olafsson, who later worked at Advanta. After shuttling the console around to gaming conventions for years, Diebold is now ready to part with the Nintendo Play Station.
