A Pokémon game will finally let Professor Oak go into battle for the first time

Once upon a time, before he was a star researcher in the world of Pokémon, Professor Oak was a trainer. We never get to see this side of him, though — often, he just gives you a starter monster and then goes on to act as your adviser. Well, until now.

A Pokémon Masters update hitting Friday will introduce Professor Oak as a sync pair, and the Pokémon expert will come equipped with a legendary Mew that he will use in battle with the player. Anyone who completes the tutorial by March 15 will get the character. Masters will include a sync pair story that will explain how the Professor met Mew, and additional content will also include some of his friends, such as Agatha.

Detroit: Become Human’s success allows Quantic Dream to self-publish future games

After 23 years of working with publishers, Quantic Dream no longer has to rely on them for funding: The developer behind games like Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human will self-publish games in the future. In a statement published Thursday on the company’s website, Quantic Dream explained that this move will help the company have more creative power over its own projects.

“We are doing this to preserve our freedom and our independence, to continue working on innovative and even more ambitious projects,” the developer’s blog post said.

Control and Untitled Goose Game win big at the DICE Awards 2020

While The Game Awards may get all the mainstream attention these days, the video game industry still gathers together every year for the DICE Awards. At the 23rd annual DICE Awards, the big winners were Control, Untitled Goose Game, and Sayonara Wild Hearts. We’ve included a list of all the winners below.

DICE, not to be confused with the studio EA DICE (Battlefield 5), is an acronym that stands for Design, Innovate, Communicate, and Entertain. The DICE Awards are the centerpiece of the annual three-day DICE summit, hosted in Las Vegas by the nonprofit Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS). This year’s awards show, which took place Thursday night, was hosted by Greg Miller and Jessica Chobot. Unlike The Game Awards, whose nominees and winners are selected by video game journalists and critics, the DICE Awards are chosen by developers and other members of the game industry.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake opening movie shows vast look at Midgar

With Final Fantasy 7 Remake less than two months away, Square Enix has posted the game’s opening cinematic, which shows off the first snippet of the game alongside a bigger look at Midgar.

The scene, which presumably plays when you start a new game, shows the industrial city of Midgar and the desolate world outside of it. Flowers and trees don’t thrive within the city, with huge energy reactors planted around it, sucking the life out of the planet. However, the flower seller we know and love, Aerith, has managed to cultivate life within Midgar, even if it’s unappreciated.

Report: Sony struggling with PS5 costs, price point uncertain

Sony is struggling with “costly parts,” driven by high demand for memory components, that could drive the price of the PlayStation 5 to around $500, according to a report from Bloomberg. The current manufacturing cost of the PS5, Bloomberg says, is around $450.

Competition for DRAM and NAND flash memory are said to be driving up costs, but Bloomberg also reports that Sony is using an especially expensive cooling system for PS5. A common complaint about the company’s current-generation console, the PlayStation 4, is loud fan noise due to heat dissipation.

Bless Pokemon Home users’ outrageous trade requests

What is a Pokémon worth? This may seem like a philosophical question, but it’s one that Pokémon players have to make all the time when they trade with one another. Maybe there’s no right answer — but in some cases, there’s definitely a wrong answer.

Pokémon Home, the cloud-based storage app that facilitates monster exchange across titles, launched earlier this week, and with it game the re-introduction of the Global Trading System. With the GTS, players can upload monsters for trade and ask for something specific in return. And while many of the trades sound sensible enough, others are bold enough to make you wonder if you’re hallucinating.

Dutch’s real-life mom plays through Red Dead Redemption 2

The 75-year-old mother of the actor who played Dutch van der Linde in Red Dead Redemption 2 played through the entire open-world game so she could understand what it was her son had done, and why millions hailed the work. And the essay she wrote about her experience is a wonderfully affirming, outsider’s commentary on fan culture, particularly in video gaming.

Jessica Hoffmann Davis, an educator, playwright and author of four books about the role of arts in education, picked up a DualShock 4 controller after visiting FanExpo Boston in August 2019. She was there to see her son, Benjamin Byron Davis, on a panel to talk about portraying Dutch, the lead non-player character in charge of the gang for which the player’s character, Arthur Morgan, rides.

Fans say Red Dead Online’s disappearing animals fix actually does nothing

After a year of randomly disappearing animals in Red Dead Online, Rockstar finally launched a patch to repopulate its world. But according to fans, the patch hasn’t changed a thing.

In February of 2019, we reported that Red Dead Online was nearly unplayable — in large part because all the game’s animals had mysteriously disappeared. Player horses, wild deer, and even some townsfolk were missing from the game world entirely. In a game all about rural America and the wild west, animals play a big role in not only the game’s immersion, but also its many gameplay systems, such as hunting.

Fantasy trading card game Faeria is free at the Epic Games Store next week

The latest PC title hitting the Epic Games Store is Faeria, a turn-based strategic card game set in a fantasy world. Faeria will be available to download for Mac and Windows PC from Feb. 20-27.

Originally released in 2016 by Belgian studio Abrakam, Faeria has been described as “the perfect combination of Catan and Heartstone.” Through a combination of deckbuilding and mapbuilding, players fight turn-based battles on a “living board.” And unlike many digital card games that often require spending real money on powerful cards, Abrakam promises that “all cards are earned through simply playing the game.” However, that’s just referring to the 300 original cards — DLC packs with new cards, new monsters, and new battlegrounds are available for purchase. Faeria usually costs $24.99.
