Google’s Pokémon of the Year contest is a humiliating defeat for Pikachu

For a few weeks, folks everywhere could submit votes for a Google contest meant to determine the Pokémon of the year. On Thursday, the top 10 contenders were announced — and Greninja won. But that’s not why we’re here. The real news lies with Mimikyu, who came in third place.

Pokémon aficionados may recall that Mimikyu’s entire existence revolves around Pikachu. The ghost-type creature wears an old rag that resembles the Pokémon mascot because it, too, wants to be loved as deeply as folks love Pikachu. When this was originally announced, the lore immediately endeared everyone to Mimikyu — who doesn’t understand feeling less than?

Maquette is a bold puzzle game love story a decade in the making

Puzzle game Maquette was first revealed in 2011 at the Game Developers Conference’s Experimental Gameplay Workshop, a place for developers to showcase new ideas that aren’t quite full games yet. Maquette was a hit, thanks to its ingenious design: The player, in first-person, manipulates a small-scale model of the game world they’re living in. Objects moved or brought inside the titular maquette are represented at massive scale in the real world. So, drop a regular sized key onto a gap in the scale model of your world, and a super-sized key will bridge the same gap nearby, opening a new pathway to explore.

It’s a fascinating concept, and is probably best visualized by watching the reveal trailer for Maquette above.

PlatinumGames opens new studio to create live service games for consoles

Bayonetta and Nier: Automata developer PlatinumGames is growing. The developer announced on Thursday it has opened a new studio based in Tokyo — Platinum is headquartered in Osaka — that will develop live service games for consoles, a brand-new endeavor for the company known best for its single-player action games.

PlatinumGames has experimented with live service (or live ops) games in the past, but primarily on mobile platforms. The studio worked on two titles, Lost Order for Granblue publisher Cygames and World of Demons for DeNA, that followed the live service model, but both appear to have been canceled.

Diablo 4 aims for a better couch co-op experience, improved UI

In its first quarterly update of 2020, Blizzard revealed new details about Diablo 4 — as well as feedback from the BlizzCon demo, like the ability to rebind left click.

The post focuses on how Blizzard has evolved the user interface since Diablo 3. (Diablo 4 itself has changed since our first look in 2019.) One of the standout features of the upcoming game is a UI built for both controllers and couch co-op with a friend.

Battlefront 2’s huge free update takes players back to the best old days of Star Wars

Star Wars Battlefront 2’s latest big-time update goes back to the best ol’ days of the Star Wars canon, and by that I mean the “Age of Rebellion,” aka the places and events of the Original Trilogy and the time after the Old Republic fell.

Live as of today’s update, The Age of Rebellion brings two new reinforcements (non-hero combat units, in other words); four more blasters; four capital ships as the Supremacy mode ushers in co-operative play; plus two new maps for the Heroes vs. Villains mode.

Valve is treating The International like the Olympics, soliciting proposals from ‘host cities’

Valve Software has decided to start treating The International like the Olympics, soliciting bids from “host cities” for the annual Dota 2 championships. The announcement is accompanied by a detailed request for proposal (RFP) document. Responses are due by March 31.

“First held in Cologne, Germany in August 2011, The International has become one of the world’s largest sporting events and set numerous records for the largest prize pool in all of esports with its community-driven purse ($34.3 million total prize pool in 2019),” Valve said today in a news release. “Global viewership, international draw, and attendance rivals that of the NFL Superbowl, U.S. Open Golf Championship, and the Eurovision Song Contest.”

I can no longer fathom what’s next for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

I can no longer fathom what’s next for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Everyone knows Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for its diverse cast of fighters, with Nintendo classics like Mario and Link rumbling alongside Solid Snake, Joker, and Banjo-Kazooie. I still remember how excited I got at the announcement that Sonic the Hedgehog was coming to the Smash franchise. Sonic? In Smash? Nothing could ever top that!

Except I was a fool, and Ultimate has introduced so many characters from different franchises that I am now numb to shock. Spirits and Mii Fighter skins mean that Nintendo has room for even more characters than ever before, and so indie darlings like Sans from Undertale or Shovel Knight could pop into a player’s game.

Diablo 4 will let players rebind Left-Click

Diablo may be the clickiest game series of all time. If you’ve ever been in a voice channel with someone while they’re playing, you could probably hear their mouse moving 1000 miles a minute in the background. While that won’t be changing for Diablo 4, Blizzard did let players know in the game’s latest quarterly update post, that they’ll be able to change what their mouse is used for.

In previous Diablo games, the left-mouse button was used for both moving, something you do a lot in Diablo, and using your primary attack ability, some you also do a lot in Diablo. However, in Diablo 4, Blizzard will let players split these two actions up and put them on separate keys. This should give players more control over their character, and make sure that they never end up attack when they actually wanted to run away.

Temtem is getting a Pokémon-inspired nuzlocke game mode

Temtem will be getting a nuzlocke game mode where monsters will be released from the player’s team once they faint in battle. The game, which is set to be updated throughout 2020 and beyond, will also get player-controlled dojos and new Temtem, according to a roadmap posted by developer Crema.

In addition to the short-term roadmap released in late February, Crema has now also shown off the company’s long-term plans for the monster-collecting MMO. Before you dive into the upcoming announcements, keep in mind that Crema does say this is subject to change, and dates and content may not stay 100 percent accurate.
