Psychologists reaffirm that blaming video games for violence is ‘not scientifically sound’

On Tuesday the American Psychological Association, the leading scientific and professional organization of its kind in the United States, reaffirmed its position on violence in video games. “There is insufficient scientific evidence to support a causal link between violent video games and violent behavior,” it said in a news release. The statement reasserts a resolution made in 2015, and was based on a review of the most recent literature on the subject.

“Violence is a complex social problem that likely stems from many factors that warrant attention from researchers, policymakers and the public,” said APA President Sandra L. Shullman, PhD. “Attributing violence to video gaming is not scientifically sound and draws attention away from other factors, such as a history of violence, which we know from the research is a major predictor of future violence.”

Apex Legends players are finally getting a bigger inventory

Apex Legends players are finally getting a bigger inventory

Apex Legends’ latest event has arrived and it’s bringing players a massive quality of life improvement. The System Override Collection patch has plenty of regular changes, like balance updates to characters and weapons, but it also increases players’ base inventory slots from eight to 10.

Inventory space has long been an annoying mechanic to juggle in Apex Legends. In almost every game, you’d get a backpack within the first few minutes of a game, which would make things a little bit easier to manage. But in the rare cases where you were unlucky enough not to find a backpack, running around with just eight inventory slots could be a massive pain. Now, with the base inventory up to 10, and all of the backpacks given an upgrade as well, it should be easier for player to hang on to the items they need.

Unannounced Star Wars game appears to leak via PlayStation Network

A new Star Wars video game, one that hasn’t been officially announced by publisher Electronic Arts, may have just been revealed thanks to a datamined PlayStation Store listing. According to the Twitter account PSN releases, which is run by a bot that monitors Sony’s PlayStation Network for new Playstation 4 game releases and updates, a title called Star Wars: Project Maverick is in development.

The title was simply uploaded as “Maverick,” according to the Twitter account, but was paired with artwork that reveals a potential new Star Wars game. That artwork features a lone Imperial Star Destroyer and a small fleet of X-Wing starfighters, implying that the project would likely take place around the original Star Wars trilogy era.

Riot wants to tell most of Valorant’s story in-game

Story has never been a strong suit for multiplayer shooters. Games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive don’t really have one at all, and games like Overwatch that do implement them have trouble translating the plot from comics and cinematics to the in-game action and characters. However, with its new tactical shooter Valorant, developer Riot Games wants to change things up, by making sure that players can still feel the story in every multiplayer match.

While Riot wants to keep most of the storytelling in-game, there is some backstory to the world of Valorant that’s worth knowing. Valorant is set on Earth in the near future. This new Earth has futuristic tech, but is still vaguely recognizable. However, at some point there’s a mysterious world-wide event called First Light.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare adds a Tamagotchi-like pet that you feed with murder

Call of Duty as a franchise has gone through many changes, with various developers tweaking the gunplay and progression systems. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the latest installment, promised a grim look at the reality of war, civilian danger, and responsibility. We’re also getting a virtual pet, basically a Tamagotchi, so we can hatch a sweet little buddy from a digital egg and help it grow. Seems slightly off-theme to me, but the multiplayer in Call of Duty has always been a much lighter arena.

Introducing the Tomogunchi: a virtual pet for your Operator!

1️⃣ Feed it!
2️⃣ Monitor its moods!
3️⃣ And help it evolve!

Zynga implicated in class-action lawsuit over 2019 data breach

Two individuals have filed a class-action complaint against Zynga following a 2019 data breach that reportedly affected more than 172 million people. Zynga admitted to the data beach wherein “certain player account information” was obtained by hackers in September 2019. It said at the time that account login information for Draw Something and Words With Friends users were accessed, but the company said it did not believe financial information was accessed.

In December 2019, security website Have I Been Pwned said the data breach ranked 10th as one of the largest user information hacks. Zynga has not confirmed the size of the breach.
