Twitch sues two users, alleging they led ‘hate raids’

After a monthslong upswell in harassment targeting marginalized streamers, Twitch is suing two users for allegedly conducting so-called hate raids on the streaming platform, in violation of its terms of service.

Twitch’s lawsuit names two defendants, Twitch users CruzzControl and CreatineOverdose, and alleges that they’re responsible for some of the recent “hate raids” on Twitch. The term refers to when malicious actors use the platform’s “raid” function to flood a creator’s chat with hateful messages, often using bot accounts.

App Store must allow third-party payments, judge tells Apple

Apple cannot prohibit developers from steering app users to third-party payment means, under a permanent injunction ordered by a federal judge on Friday. The ruling is a significant victory for Epic and other developers who have found the App Store’s terms onerous and unmerited.

Apple cannot prohibit developers “from including in their apps and their metadata buttons, external links or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms,” said Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers of the Northern District of California.

Tchia looks like a vibrant open-world island adventure

Awaceb, a studio funded by Kowloon Nights, showed off the first major look at Tchia, its upcoming open-world island adventure, as part Sony’s PlayStation Showcase on Thursday. The game has a release window of 2022 and is currently in development for PlayStation 4 and 5.

Tchia’s debut trailer makes it look like you’ll be able to climb, swim, sail your boat around, and use a Breath of the Wild-esque glider as you explore the world. On top of all that, you’ll be able to use protagonist Tchia’s magical powers to transport your soul into the bodies of animals and take control of them.

Radiohead ports Kid A and Amnesiac to PlayStation 5

Radiohead and Epic Games have teamed up for a new project based on the band’s Kid A and Amnesiac albums, just in time for the band’s re-release of those two records. A trailer for the mysterious new collaboration debuted during Sony’s PlayStation Showcase 2021 on Thursday.

The trailer opens with some mumbling and assorted strings — along with a couple of hard-to-parse words from Radiohead vocalist Thom Yorke — before dropping into the familiar chords of “Everything in Its Right Place,” the first track on Kid A. The trailer then gives us close ups on concrete walls with scribbled characters on them and short, mysterious messages like “glints amongst the ice.” None of it makes much sense, but it does look like a very cool setting to listen to Radiohead in.

All the news from PlayStation Showcase 2021

Sony has brought back its September PlayStation Showcase, which last year heralded the launch of the new PlayStation 5, for a 40-minute parade of news, updates, release dates, and other announcements for the console’s biggest titles. Is this going to be regularly scheduled programming from now on? You know what they say: Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, but three times is an annual thing. Guess we’ll find out next year.

Meantime, Polygon is rounding up everything seen, heard, and announced at the event right here. Viewers can expect fresh looks at the God of War sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, Final Fantasy 16, and the Grand Theft Auto 5 enhanced edition for the newest console generation. The showcase will cover first- and third-party games, and possibly new titles we haven’t heard of yet. All Sony Interactive Entertainment said in announcing the showcase is that the next-generation of PlayStation VR wouldn’t be discussed.

Wolverine, the Marvel Comics mutant with a healing factor and an adamantium-encrusted skeleton, will star in an upcoming game from Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games. Logan flashed his claws for the fans in an all-too-brief announcement trailer during Thursday’s PlayStation Showcase.

Wolverine has long been one of the most popular Marvel Comics characters ever, bringing his fighting talents to the X-Men, the Avengers, and many more. In a post on the PlayStation blog, Ryan Schneider of Insomniac Games said that while developers were working on Spider-Man, they would often talk about their ideas for making a game about Logan.
