Animal Crossing can be a competitive game, if you want it to be

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is an idyllic life simulator. I spend my mornings — before work, in case my boss is listening — with a routine: plucking fruit from trees, extracting ore from rocks, and digging up fossils for my ol’ pal Blathers. After work, I meet my friends to sell my fruit and check out their stores, inspecting what goods they’ve got that I can pick up for my own island.

It’s not a competitive game. It’s designed to be like a vacation, an escape from life as we know it — something that’s especially helpful right now.

Avalanche Studios teases new game with a snowy cave full of monsters

Systemic Reaction, the new name for the studio behind Generation Zero, is working on a new project. The studio released a teaser trailer for its next game on Wednesday morning, as part of an announcement that its parent company, Avalanche, the developer of the Just Cause series, will now be known as Avalanche Studios Group.

The teaser for System Reaction’s new game, which doesn’t have a title yet, keeps things pretty mysterious. It starts out by slowly zooming in on a dark cave with snow all around. In the background, we can hear gunfire that sounds like several different firefights. As we get close to the cave entrance, what sounds like a plane rushes by overhead. We enter the cave and the gunfire fades away, as growls and clicking sounds take over while the screen fades to black. Suddenly, there are flashes of gunfire; the muzzle flashes briefly illuminate horrifying monsters, which we don’t get a great look at.

How to make Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ chat less insufferable

How to make Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ chat less insufferable

Typing on the Nintendo Switch is a bit fiddly. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, your character will scrunch its face into something akin to the thinking face emoji while the keyboard is open. It’s a physical cue to your pals that you’re trying to talk to them — similar to when your phone is out, which is a cue that you’re probably distracted. Typing, whether you’re using a finger or your Joy-Cons, still takes a while. Most of the time, I would rather just not chat. But then, I remembered NookLink.

NookLink is an application within the Nintendo Switch Online app for iOS and Android smartphones. It’s got a number of different features, but the most useful one — for me, at least — is the chat functionality. You can use NookLink to chat through voice or text, and it’s a lot more capable than the in-game keyboard.

Now, a little over a year after its initial PC release, Steam players will get their chance to check out the game.

Take care of your Nintendo Switch — Nintendo’s repair shops are closed due to COVID-19

Nintendo’s customer support operation has closed its repair service centers, as a preventive precaution to limit the spread of the coronavirus as government officials continue to issue stay-at-home orders. That means that owners of the Switch and other Nintendo consoles and handhelds need to be extra careful with the hardware helping them get through this time spent indoors.

The repair centers are “closed until further notice,” Nintendo said in a statement on its support site. Not only may products sent in for repair from now on be returned to players as undeliverable, but hardware that Nintendo had accepted and was working on before this closure is now effectively stranded at its shut-down facilities.

Animal Crossing fans are turning clothes into food, and now I’m hungry

Animal Crossing has always offered players consumable food items, like coffee, but Animal Crossing: New Horizons fans are taking things to the next level. By using custom patterns, many island residents are recreating delectable snacks on clothes and hats — and the results are mouthwatering.

Good thing, too: After the horror-themed rooms and the now communitywide obsession with tarantulas, I could use something cute like this.

Nintendo donated 9,500 masks to local coronavirus relief efforts

Nintendo of America has donated more than 9,500 N95 respirator masks to coronavirus relief efforts in the state of Washington.

As COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, continues to spread globally, masks are in short supply. Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers are unable to properly protect themselves from the disease, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is suggesting homemade solutions like bandanas or scarves “as a last resort” for those unable to wear a mask due to the shortage. Communities are also reaching out to the public for help, taking donations from wherever available.

CBS All Access offers a free one-month subscription, according to Patrick Stewart

Sir Patrick Stewart took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce that CBS is offering a free monthlong trial of its subscription service, CBS All Access. Stewart is currently reprising his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard on the CBS All Access show Star Trek: Picard. After a bumpy run with a strong opening followed by a series of questionable course changes, the show’s season 1 finale will drop onto the platform on Thursday.

According to Stewart’s tweet, new CBS All Access subscribers in the US can sign up for a free month of the service with the promo code GIFT. That code is valid through April 23.

Nintendo is selling refurbished Switch consoles for $259.99

Right now, Nintendo fans who are itching to get their hands on a Switch console are often out of luck. The handheld-only Switch Lite is widely available, but some people would prefer to play their Switch on the big screen. There’s no need to turn to eBay — Nintendo is selling refurbished consoles on its website.

There is a caveat; these are the launch models, so they have poorer battery life than the more modern Switch. But they are available for $259.99, which is a very decent price.
