Star Wars: Squadrons leaks on Xbox website

A new, unannounced Star Wars game titled Star Wars: Squadrons appears to have leaked through a piece of artwork posted on Xbox.com on Friday, seemingly ahead of an official announcement from publisher Electronic Arts.

The artwork shows a Rebel pilot and an Imperial TIE Fighter pilot standing back to back, and a series of starfighters (X-Wing, A-Wing, Y-Wing, TIE Fighter, TIE Bomber, TIE Reaper) about to clash. The Xbox website also displays the tagline “Pilots wanted” and includes a pre-order button that points to a broken link. No other details about the game were visible.

How big is the PlayStation 5? Fans are trying to figure that out

Sony revealed the PlayStation 5’s design on Thursday, and reaction to the curvy black-and-white console has been mixed. What is less black and white is just how big the PS5 is going to be; Sony didn’t release official dimensions for its next-gen console, driving fans to speculate about its size based on limited information.

We’ve reached out to Sony for official dimensions of the PS5 and await its response. But unofficial findings point to a very large console, one that’s taller in stature (or wider, depending on the system’s orientation) than its direct competitor, the Xbox Series X, and bigger than the beefy PlayStation 3.

Will 2022’s Lightfall be the end for Destiny 2? Not according to the game director’s plans

On June 9, Bungie revealed the future of Destiny 2. The studio announced and launched the new season, Season of Arrivals. It spoke about Destiny 2: Beyond Light, the game’s major expansion coming this fall. And it did something unprecedented: it announced the expansions for the next two years as well, The Witch Queen in 2021 and Lightfall in 2022.

This new “Era of Darkness” will take players up to the end of Year 6 of Destiny 2, and Year 9 of Destiny as a franchise. So is the ominously named Lightfall (a working title) the end for the Destiny franchise? Based on our conversation with Destiny 2 game director, Luke Smith, no.

itch.io’s Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality tops $5M

itch.io’s Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality has blasted past its initial fundraising goals and hit the $5 million mark. The bundle, which includes more than 1,500 works from at least 1,198 creators, is raising money for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and the Community Bail Fund. Proceeds will be split 50/50 between the two organizations.

The experimental game distribution platform started the fundraiser last week following nationwide anti-police brutality demonstrations protesting the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, and the killings of other unarmed black people, like Admaud Arbery, who was shot by two white men while jogging.

PS5 event: The biggest announcements

Major details about the PlayStation 5 were revealed on Thursday, including the design of the hardware — both the standard and discless Digital Edition models — as well as some of the games that will be available alongside Sony’s launch of the next-gen console this holiday season.

Sony was careful to note that everything after the initial Grand Theft Auto 5 reveal had been captured on PlayStation 5 systems. The vast majority of the event was made up of footage of games running on Sony’s latest hardware, giving us at least a small glimpse of what the system can do.

The PS5 Digital Edition will be the first PlayStation to launch without a disc drive

The PS5 Digital Edition will be the first PlayStation to launch without a disc drive

Twist! Sony announced two version of the PlayStation 5. The standard edition is the traditional video game console you’d expect from Sony. The second option, the Digital Edition, is different. For the first time, Sony will begin a generation with hardware lacking a disc drive.

This feels both surprising and inevitable. Millions of people download their games onto hard drives, rather than dealing with boxed copies. At the same time, a console without a disc drive always felt like a risk for console manufacturers who rely on partnerships with brick-and-mortar shops like GameStop to sell boxed versions of popular games.

Dishonored devs are making a wild PS5 game

Deathloop was originally announced by Bethesda studio Arkane Lyon in 2019, but during Sony’s Future of Gaming event, we got to see actual gameplay. Based on the trailer, the timeloop-based game looks stylish as hell.

You can tell the game is manned by Arkane, too. Many of the protagonists’ powers are similar to what you’ll find in Dishonored, such as the teleporting Blink. There seem to be some good sneaky options for combat as well. The game appears to be focused on supernatural abilities and spooky environments. Many of the characters highlighted during the trailer have a cult-like vibe, with folks often wearing a fox mask to hide their faces — or other types of coverings.

Horizon Forbidden West announced for PS5

Horizon Forbidden West is the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn, the hit post-apocalyptic open-world action game starring a fearless young heroine. It’s in development at Guerrilla Games on PlayStation 5, publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Thursday during a livestreamed presentation featuring first looks at PS5 games.

Aloy (Ashly Burch) and her associate Sylens (Lance Reddick) will return in Horizon Forbidden West, which will take the characters westward to explore a new frontier of America. The original game already took place in the West, in present-day states like Colorado and Utah, and it seems like the sequel will head to the Pacific coast. The trailer features footage of Aloy swimming around, and there are new machines based on animals such as boars, turtles, and elephants.

Pragmata for PS5 is a bizarre Capcom game with a spaceman and a mysterious child

Pragmata, a mysterious new game from Capcom, was announced today during the Sony PlayStation livestreaming event. Little is known about the game, but a trailer shows a man in a spacesuit grappling with unknown powers that have corrupted the planet Earth. The release window is set for 2022.

In the trailer, Pragmata shows its main character walking around the streets of a major urban center in a hardened spacesuit. On his back is an articulated arm, which creates capsules that the main character can shoot out of a small pistol. The first capsule allows him to see a record of what happened on the streets — shimmering artifacts of men, women, children, and their pets.
