Mario Kart for mobile phones is finally getting a landscape mode

An update for Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo’s kart racer for Android and iOS, coming on July 21 will introduce a new landscape mode to the mobile game, nearly 10 months after launch. According to Nintendo, Mario Kart Tour’s new landscape mode will also include a new control layout.

When Mario Kart Tour launched in September 2019, the only way to play was in portrait mode — a choice that contributed to the mobile kart-racing game’s weird feel and some funky controls. But Nintendo has continued to update the mobile Mario Kart with new events, new karts, and new racers, including the recent addition of Captain Toad.

Xbox Series X will have the ‘most diverse collection of first-party games’

With the launch of the Xbox Series X this holiday — Microsoft’s fourth major console launch over two decades — Xbox head Phil Spencer and his team are taking a very different approach to ushering in a new generation of game devices. Unlike the more traditional hard breaks between previous Xbox generations, where customers bought a new console and a rash of new games to play on it, Microsoft’s next generational jump will be soft. There’s the promise of backward compatibility with three previous Xbox consoles, a hundred-plus titles playable on day one to Xbox Game Pass subscribers, and the option to play Xbox games old and new from the cloud on phones and tablets.

Even the games coming to Xbox Series X from Microsoft’s internal game studios will also be on the Xbox One for the next “couple years,” Spencer has said. It’s a very different strategy than the more traditional path chosen by Xbox’s chief rival, PlayStation. “And I think multiple strategies can succeed,” Spencer said.

Madden NFL 21 will replace the Redskins name and logo with a ‘generic’ Washington team

The Washington Redskins football team will drop its name and logo following decades of protests by Indigenous activists. A new name and logo hasn’t been chosen yet, so in Electronic Arts’ upcoming Madden NFL 21, the publisher will include a “generic Washington team” as the company waits for “final word on the updated team name and logo design,” according to an Electronic Arts representative.

“We are pleased to see Washington’s decision to change their team name and visual identity,” the representative said in a statement emailed to Polygon. “We are quickly working to update Madden NFL 21 to feature a generic Washington team, while we await final word on the updated team name and logo design.”

US GameStop customers will be required to wear masks in store

GameStop customers in the United States will be required to wear a face mask in all stores, the company announced Friday. The new protocol will go into effect on July 27. Customers with “concerns, or health-related issues in wearing a face covering” are all directed to use the GameStop online store.

“We believe this is the right thing to do to ensure the heath, safety and well-being of our associates and customers from the growing spread of COVID-19,” GameStop CEO George Sherman said. “Providing a safe environment in our stores for all customers and store associates continues to be our top priority and wearing a face covering is a simple step every one of us can take to ensure the safety of others in our stores.”

Animal Crossing mod gets rid of all the sea bass

If you play Animal Crossing: New Horizons for any amount of time, you are probably already sick of the phrase, “I caught a sea bass! No, wait—it’s at least a C+!” The sea bass is so common many players come to hate the poor marine denizen, who often tricks people into thinking they might have found a rarer fish. But what if you never had to see another sea bass in Animal Crossing ever again?

Such are the powers of mods, like this one by SmuggestGirl, which eradicates the green roach in its entirety. “Not all hero’s wear capes, thanks!” one commenter on the mod page says. “Shucks, now [it’s] all squids, olive flounders, and red snappers now,” another says.

Crysis Remastered absolutely runs on Nintendo Switch, and it looks like this

Crytek and Nintendo have released a short video showing off how Crysis Remastered runs on Nintendo Switch, giving us our first look at a technological marvel that still may disappoint fans of the original.

You can watch the game in action at the top of this post, and I’m not sure how Crytek managed to wring so much out of Nintendo’s hardware. The Switch can, in fact, run Crysis, as the old joke goes.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will have Mortal Kombat-style x-ray gore

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will have Mortal Kombat-style x-ray gore

With Assassin’s Creed Valhalla approaching this November, we’re getting to see more of the sprawling open-world viking action game — both inside and out. That’s because fans can witness brutal assassinations in full X-ray vision, a first for the series. It’s like watching the autopsy scenes from CSI, except instead of solving murders, you’re causing them.

These gruesome kills first appeared in a recent gameplay trailer, leading fans to think it was just a bit of flourish. But, according to a tweet by game director Benoit Richer, Valhalla will allow players to trigger them in-game. In one breakout gif you can see the main character, Eivor, not just stab an enemy but plunge their blade right into their guts and fat. It’s all very Mortal Kombat, and it definitely speaks to the brutality of the setting.
