Xbox head implies Game Pass unlikely to come to PlayStation or Nintendo Switch

If you were hoping that Xbox Game Pass would be available soon on PlayStation or Nintendo Switch, you might be waiting even longer for that dream to become a reality.

Xbox head Phil Spencer said in a video interview with GameStar that the likelihood of the subscription service, which offers games on both Xbox and PC, launching on a Sony or Nintendo platform is low. While it was always a far-fetched dream that the service would be available on PlayStation, Microsoft and Nintendo have recently begun to offer cross-play and a few Microsoft first-party games, like Ori and the Blind Forest and Hellblade, have launched on Nintendo Switch.

Hellish Quart may be the next Bushido Blade successor

For the first time in years, old-school Bushido Blade fans have a glimmer of hope to latch onto: Hellish Quart. Hellish Quart is a new sword dueling game coming to Steam Early Access, and it’s highly reminiscent of the beloved PlayStation fighting game.

On its Steam Early Access page, developer Kubold describes Hellish Quart as a sword dueling game set in the 17th century featuring different warriors from the time period.

Indie dev turns Bloodborne 2D in Zelda-like Yarntown

Bloodborne is a lot of things — the best game of the generation, according to some — and “cute” isn’t one of them. But indie developer Max Mraz dared to answer the question: What if Bloodborne was cute? And thus, Mraz birthed Yarntown, a 2D The Legend of Zelda-inspired version of Bloodborne, into existence.

In the middle of June, Mraz launched Yarntown for free on itch.io. Yarntown takes place in Yarnham, the world of Bloodborne, but takes visual and gameplay inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

All 8 Harry Potter movies will disappear from HBO Max next month

On Aug. 25, HBO Max will purge all eight Harry Potter films from its service. This news comes only two months after the series initial surprise launch on WarnerMedia’s new platform. It’s currently unclear where the Harry Potter series will go, if anywhere.

Months ago, fans woke up to a surprise on HBO Max launch day: all of the Harry Potter movies streaming in once place. This was a tough get for HBO Max, as Warner Bros. released the films originally, but sold the TV rights to NBCUniversal four years ago — a deal that was set to last until 2025. That deal reportedly required a great deal of “horse trading” between Warner and NBC.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be playable in 4K, 60 fps on PS5

Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be playable in 4K resolution and at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5, developer Insomniac Games said on Twitter on Monday, thanks to an optional “Performance Mode.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man ran at a solid 30 frames per second on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro, based on an analysis by Digital Foundry. It’s not clear what compromises Spider-Man: Miles Morales will make to achieve 4K/60 fps performance, but it’s possible that features like real-time ray tracing and other rendering effects could be disabled in Performance Mode to emphasize frame rate and resolution. We’ve reached out to Sony Interactive Entertainment for additional details and will update when the company responds.

The Last of Us 2 details make heights scarier than its monsters

When I see an infected in The Last of Us Part 2, I keep my cool. Even when it’s a jump scare, or an unexpected enemy, I generally know how to deal with most of the things the game makes me kill. Heights, though? Now those make me pause.

It’s funny, because I’ve never been particularly scared of heights in video games — most of them make you climb things, tall things. Naughty Dog has an entire franchise predicated on scaling exciting and exotic locations. But when I play as Abby in The Last of Us 2, I’m keenly aware of how high up we go.

Cadence of Hyrule adds five characters, songs and story to come

Challenging rhythm game Cadence of Hyrule will soon expand its sprite-filled world, according to Monday morning’s Nintendo direct mini. The musical spin-off will introduce new characters later today, such as Impa, Aria, Shadow Link, Shadow Zelda and Frederick, in a pack that costs $5.99. Each character introduces their own quirk to the gameplay — Aria, for example, will die after a single hit.

Later on, Cadence of Hyrule will also add some more tunes as a part of a Melody Pack, which includes 39 songs. “Players can change the background music at any time so they can listen to their favorite songs while journeying through Hyrule,” the press release reads. Released by the end of October 2020, this DLC will also cost $5.99.
