Selena Gomez held a surprise Animal Crossing concert

Selena Gomez recently debuted a stripped-down version of her newest track with Trevor Daniel, “Past Life,” in an unexpected place: a late night talk show on Twitch that exists entirely within Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Animal Talking is the brainchild of Gary Whitta, the Rogue One story co-writer who invites guests to load up the life simulator and chat through their cherubic avatars from the comfort of their own homes. On Wednesday, the livestream took one more cue from actual talk shows and featured a surprise musical guest. While Whitta has had stars on the show before, like Brie Larson, Gomez is undoubtedly his biggest pull yet — on Instagram alone, the former Disney actress has 185 million followers, making her one of the largest accounts on the entire service.

Captain Marvel 2 will be directed by Candyman reboot director Nia DaCosta

Nia DaCosta is set to direct Captain Marvel 2, according to reports by Deadline and Variety. She will be the first Black woman to direct a Marvel film. DaCosta is also the director of the upcoming Candyman, a re-imagining of the 1992 film of the same name.

DaCosta first rose to prominence with the 2019 indie film Little Woods, a Western-inspired crime thriller which starred Tessa Thompson as a woman dealing with drug trading to provide for her younger sister. Candyman, which DaCosta co-wrote with Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us), was originally set to release in July but has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. An elaborate trailer for the film, released in June, features spooky puppets and served as a prequel for the upcoming feature.

Fall Guys players are trolling win screens with BIG LETTERS

Fall Guys is a wild, silly battle royale game in which a series of little jelly bean players jostle their way past obstacles and compete for a chance to grab the crown. Only one little bean can win, but players are finding ways to make their own fun even outside of the traditional format. For instance, what if everyone saw a player’s name and had to pay tribute because it was in BIG LETTERS? The Fall Guys devs are patching the game to solve this very issue after players reported enormous names showing up at the end-of-round screen.

We have a patch that has a bunch of fixes including one for LARGE RED LETTERS in player names

The patch fixes a few things across the game, so we're just trying to fully test it, and make sure nothing is broken as a result of the fixes

Will keep you posted on how it goes!

Blizzard immortalizes late World of Warcraft player Reckful in-game

Following Byron “Reckful” Bernstein’s death in July, World of Warcraft players flocked to the game’s public gathering spaces to honor the player. Now, World of Warcraft developer Blizzard Entertainment is adding a permanent memorial to Bernstein.

In a recent update, Blizzard added a non-playable character (NPC) to World of Warcraft’s Shadowlands expansion. The NPC, a Rogue Trainer named Reckful, now stands permanently in the Cathedral of Light, the spot where players gathered following his death. World of Warcraft players can interact with the Reckful NPC, which has a line of dialogue that’s a nod to Bernstein’s World of Warcraft career. “I don’t train Assassination Rogues,” the NPC says — a reference to Bernstein’s skill in Wrath of the Lich King, according to World of Warcraft website Wowhead.

Animal Crossing outsells Breath of the Wild in mere months

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is undoubtedly the video game of the pandemic, at first selling millions in the first 11 days alone. But now that it’s been a few months, Nintendo has released its latest financial data, and Animal Crossing’s sales are staggering to consider in context, when compared to other flagship video games.

Since its release in late March, New Horizons has sold 22.4M copies, making it the second most popular Nintendo Switch game ever, right behind Mario Kart 8 (which as of this writing, sits at 26.7M units).

Animal Crossing patches out controversial star fragment trees

The latest update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons comes down on a popular hack where players forced regular trees to bear things other than fruit, such as fossils or, most prominently, star fragments.

The move comes in the heels of a highly controversial moment within the Animal Crossing fandom, where players were sharing “Dream Addresses” with each other that allowed fans to visit a saved version of their island. Notably, players sporting islands with star tree fragments were sometimes reported by visitors to Nintendo for cheating, a move that resulted in dream island takedowns, or, at times, temporary revoking of online connectivity. Some claimed that they were harassed or bullied over having star trees by viewers of YouTubers who made a game out of reporting hacked islands as well.
