Fall Guys is rewarding fans for dealing with launch issues

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout exploded upon release, with seemingly everyone in the gaming world playing or talking about it. That’s a feel-good story if I’ve ever seen one, except for the fact its popularity meant the game’s servers buckled under the pressure. Server issues continued through launch week, but now that things have settled, developer Mediatonic is thanking players for weathering the storm.

On Twitter, the official Fall Guys account announced that anyone who opened up the game before midnight on Aug. 13 would get 5,000 kudos — Fall Guys’ in-game currency — along with a special cactus-themed skin. The skin, Mediatonic says, is a variant on a different costume created by the winner of a contest held in February. Each month, a new, fan-developed skin will be introduced to the game.

Try out NBA 2K21’s new gameplay controls with its demo in two weeks

NBA 2K21 will get a free demo Aug. 24 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and with it, players can try out the overhauled “Pro Stick,” the right thumbstick commands that for the past decade have done everything from take shots to juke, fake, and add razzle dazzle to one’s dribble moves.

Mike Wang, Visual Concepts’ gameplay director for the NBA 2K series, dug into the Pro Stick changes in a blog post Thursday morning that announced the demo’s availability. Taking a shot with the Pro Stick (a button command also initiates a shot) is now done by holding the right stick down, only. In past versions of the game, one could hold the stick in any direction, and it would cue up a context-appropriate shot attempt. That still holds true for starting layups and dunks.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is changing an iconic trick’s name to honor its creator

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is changing an iconic trick’s name to honor its creator

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 will be updating the name of the “mute grab” to honor the creator of the move, Chris Weddle.

Tony Hawk took to Instagram to explain the reasons for the change, citing the inventor of the move. When the grab was originally named in 1981, it was debuted by Weddle, who is deaf. The trick was thusly named after the skater in a roundabout and ultimately mistaken way. The community at the time “referred to him as the ‘quiet, mute guy,’” Hawk explained in a recent social media post.

Even Shroud is shocked at his Twitch viewer count after returning

First-person shooter streamer Michael Grzesiek, better known by Shroud, returned to Twitch on Wednesday and was rewarded with a staggering number of viewers.

Grzesiek’s Twitch stream peaked at around 516,000 viewers, who ended up watching him fiddle with his audio and bit rate settings. After making sure that his stream was up to par, he began streaming Valorant, boosting the game’s live viewer count on Twitch significantly. During the livestream, Grzesiek said he only expected around 200,000 fans to tune in.

Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher is coming to Rainbow Six Siege

Sam Fisher, the hero of Ubisoft’s dormant Splinter Cell franchise, will soon join the Rainbow Six Siege lineup. Ubisoft Montreal teased the Third Echelon spymaster in a video Tuesday, promising a full reveal on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.

The reaction from the community? Well ... it’s not the unconditional raving Ubi might have been hoping for. Rainbow 6’s subreddit was modestly enthusiastic, stoked by an in-world communiqué from the operator Finka to Rainbow boss Harry Padney.

The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 demo is everything I wanted it to be

The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 demo is everything I wanted it to be

I was dying to find out if the developers of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 had done it, had brought back the original feel of the series, and I received my answer very quickly: This is what I wanted. It was hard to stop smiling once everything clicked.

The demo sent to the press by Activision is the same demo you’ll get access to in the next few days if you pre-order the game or buy the right burrito, but don’t expect much. It’s not long, but then, it doesn’t have to be. It includes a single level: The Warehouse. There are no goals to achieve, no letters to collect, and no hidden tapes to find. You can only play as Tony Hawk, and you have two minutes to get as many points as you can during your run. That’s the entirety of the experience.

Control’s second expansion is due to release soon, and the game is getting an Ultimate Edition to celebrate. The Ultimate Edition will come with all the updates and content for the game so far, including both expansions, and it will also be sold on Steam, a first for this game. But it comes with another bonus as well.

Anyone who buys Control Ultimate Edition will get a free upgrade to the next-gen version of the game when it comes out later this year. According to the Control website, the free copy of the game will be a “digital upgrade” to the next-gen version of the game for players that buy the Ultimate Edition on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Players who already own the original version of the game won’t be eligible for the free upgrade.

The Sims 4 will get new skin tones and fix others, EA says

The Sims 4 developer Electronic Arts promised to add more skin tones and hairstyles to the game, The Sims 4 executive producer Lyndsay Pearson said on Tuesday. The Sims 4 community, particularly Black simmers, have been asking the developer for better representation for years.

“We hear you and recognize that we have not done enough to address the variety of skin tones and hair styles that you expect to find in The Sims 4,” Pearson said in a video clip posted to Twitter. “While we have made additions and improvements and fixes in the past, there is much more for us to do.”
