Control publisher tries, fails to explain why next-gen upgrade is limited to Ultimate Edition

On Thursday morning, Control publisher 505 Games posted “an explanation” on its Control Ultimate Edition, a bundled version of the game and its expansions with a free next-gen upgrade. But the so-called explanation doesn’t explain much of anything at all.

The publisher originally announced Control Ultimate Edition last week, but existing Control players have been confused regarding next-gen upgrades. Specifically, 505 said that only Control Ultimate Edition buyers would get a free upgrade to the enhanced versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. In its post Thursday, the publisher reiterated that yes, that’s the case. Current Control players — using the original base game and the expansions or Season Pass — will not have any way to play the upgraded version for the new consoles. The only way for them to get the upgrade is to re-buy the game in the Control Ultimate Edition, which costs $39.99.

Call of Duty: Warzone players find giant missile thanks to Black Ops Cold War ARG

For weeks, there’s been an ongoing alternate reality game, or ARG, going on inside the Call of Duty community, with some streamers and press getting vintage projectors sent to their homes that contained clues about this year’s Call of Duty game. Activision has already started teasing the next entry, Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War, but players also used the ARG to discover a new secret in the Call of Duty: Warzone map.

On Wednesday, Reddit user Uli909 posted a short clip to the Call of Duty: Warzone subreddit that may offer a hint about an imminent in-game reveal.

The next Call of Duty game is Black Ops: Cold War

Treyarch’s next installment in the Call of Duty franchise is a return to familiar territory. Earlier today, the developer released the first teaser trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War.

The teaser, first discovered by CharlieIntel, is made up entirely of newsreels and historical footage, likely providing a background for the game’s plot. The trailer itself is heavy on the Cold War intrigue, and introduces players to a Soviet spy codenamed Perseus. According to the teaser — and some light Googling — Perseus was never caught, and infiltrated deeply into some of the most secretive U.S. defense institutions in order to give the USSR an edge in the global arms race.

Lead writer and director fired from Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2

The publisher and developer of Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2 have fired the game’s creative director and lead writer, and it doesn’t sound like it was an amicable departure.

Paradox Interactive and Hardsuit Labs announced the dismissals in a blog post on Wednesday, saying that Brian Mitsoda, who was also lead writer of the original 2004 game, and director Ka’ai Cluney “are no longer part of the team at Hardsuit Labs.”

Sea of Thieves’ summer event is all about the little things

Rare has released the August update for Sea of Thieves, which kicks off an event known as the “Summer of Sea of Thieves.” This event is far less involved or cinematic as the Ashen Winds update, which introduced fiery pirates commanding spectral ships, but it has a lot of nice bonuses and reasons for players to log in regularly.

The August event is called Hunters of the Deep, and it tasks players with hunting down megalodons in order to collect their teeth. Shark teeth can unlock a new set of ship cosmetics called the Shrouded Ghost, allowing players to make their sloop or galleon far more spooky. If players miss the August event, they will be able to pick the Shrouded Ghost ship set up through the Pirate Emporium for real money.

See how the Xbox Series X UI will unite consoles, PCs, and phones

The Xbox Series X’s release date is just a few months away — probably — and Microsoft has finally given us a preview of what things will look like when we first boot up the console. In a post on Wednesday, Microsoft gave fans its first look at the New Xbox Experience user interface, which will connect Xbox players across consoles, PC, and mobile devices.

The new Xbox UI should be familiar to anyone that’s used an Xbox One. Tiles still provide large images and represent most of the navigation to different menus, but everything has been streamlined a bit, according to Microsoft. Things like launching games, navigating to your social tabs, and browsing for new games in the newly redesigned Microsoft Store should all be easier on the new UI than they were before.

Fall Guys makers ask thirsty brands to give it up for charity

The makers of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout know their game is a very popular, very watchable thirst trap for brands online, and they’re capitalizing on that. Mediatonic is forcing social media marketers to prove their thirst is true with cold hard cash, donated to a charity that helps gamers with accessibility needs.

Currently, G2 Esports is in the lead with a donation bid of $203,003, hoping to get a suit of samurai armor (styled like its logo) as a wearable costume in the game. (G2 outbid Ninja’s $200,000 offer, made a few hours ago.) Bids and designs have also come in from bidet maker Tushy, Minecraft server vendors Bisect Hosting, and indie fighting game Rivals of Aether.

Baldur’s Gate 3 goes into early access Sept. 30

Larian Studios will release Baldur’s Gate 3 in early access form on Sept. 30, the studio announced during a livestream presentation Tuesday. It won’t meet the best-case, August launch scenario Larian had hoped for, but fans won’t have to wait that much longer for the early access game to arrive on PC and Stadia.

The early access version of Baldur’s Gate 3 will feature five Origin characters as well as player-customized characters. At launch, players will get access to Astarion (Elf/Vampire Rogue), Gale (Human Wizard), Lae’zel (Githyanki Warrior), Shadowheart (Half-Elf Cleric), and Wyll (Human Warlock). More characters will be announced “throughout early access,” Larian said in a news release.

The best announcements from Nintendo’s Indie World, ranked by cuteness

Nintendo streamed a new Indie World presentation on Tuesday that was packed with games, both new and familiar. There were newly announced Nintendo Switch ports of Supergiant Games’ Hades, Capybara Games’ Apple Arcade hit Grindstone, ’90s internet simulator Hypnospace Outlaw, stylish puzzle game Manifold Garden, and undersea survival-adventure game Subnautica (and its expansion, Subnautica: Below Zero).

There were also a slew of new game announcements that stood out for their cuteness, adorableness, and preciousness. In fact, it was a lot to keep up with, and points to a strong release calendar for the Nintendo Switch, at least on the indies side.
