Airplane Mode is Microsoft Flight Simulator for the rest of us

Airplane Mode is Microsoft Flight Simulator for the rest of us

Sure, Microsoft Flight Simulator is cool — but do you know how hard it is to fly an airplane? Even a virtual one? I do. Even with a flying lesson from Polygon’s flight sim expert Charlie Hall, I had not managed to land a plane without terrifying all passengers on board. (It’s probably not a great look for your captain — that’s me — to experience alarmingly disorienting motion sickness throughout the flight, either.)

For now I will continue piloting Microsoft Flight Simulator’s airplanes (Dramamine on-deck), but I will consider retiring when AMC Games’ Airplane Mode is released this fall on Windows PC and Mac.

New leak suggests Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes place directly after the original Black Ops

Early Tuesday morning, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War leaked ahead of its upcoming reveal. A long description for the game, posted on Call of Duty Tracker, suggests it’s a direct sequel to the original Call of Duty: Black Ops.

As the name suggests, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes place during the Cold War — a war of espionage rather than gunfire, taking place between the United States and Russia in the 1980s. According to the leak, “players will come face-to-face with historical figures and hard truths, as they battle around the globe through iconic locales like East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey, the Soviet KGB headquarters and more.”

New Xbox Experience rolling out to Xbox Insiders

On Tuesday, Microsoft began rolling out its new Xbox Experience — an upgraded user interface that’ll be consistent between Xbox platforms, including mobile apps, Xbox Game Pass on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Microsoft revealed details on the new UI last week, but beginning Tuesday, players will began seeing it for themselves.

Portions of the new design are available this week, but Microsoft will continue updating the layout and its features until the Xbox Series X is released in November. Microsoft said that players shouldn’t expect a “drastic” change on Xbox One, but that the update brings the UI in line with “other experiences on the PC and mobile devices” — like rounded tile edges and updated fonts.

Borderlands 3’s next expansion takes place inside a brain

Borderlands 3’s fourth piece of downloadable content will launch on Sept. 10, just in time for the game’s first-year anniversary. The new DLC is titled Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck, and takes place inside the unstable mind of Krieg, one of the DLC Vault Hunters from Borderlands 2.

In Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck, players will descend into the mind of Krieg, like the most violent Magic School Bus field trip Ms. Frizzle ever saw. Players will face new enemies in beautiful, twisted environments — including a massive Krieg NPC watching over the battlefield.

Report: New Switch model with better graphics coming in 2021

Nintendo will release an upgraded model of its Switch hardware in 2021, according to a report from Bloomberg. The new Nintendo Switch model could feature more computing power and support for 4K resolution visuals, Bloomberg reported, citing sources.

Reports of an upgraded version of the Switch have been circulating for nearly two years. The Wall Street Journal reported in October 2018 that Nintendo planned to introduce a cheaper model of the Switch — the Switch Lite was later released in 2019 — and another model with an improved screen. In April 2019, Bloomberg reported that a “modest upgrade” for the Switch was in development, but that a “more powerful version” wasn’t. Nintendo would later release an updated version of the Switch with improved battery life.

Apple can’t revoke Epic Games’ Unreal Engine developer tools, judge rules

The first major court opinion in the legal battle between Apple and Fortnite developer Epic Games is (literally) a split decision: In an order filed late Monday, a federal judge ruled that Apple cannot terminate Epic’s access to Unreal Engine development tools on Apple platforms, but declined to grant Epic’s request to force Apple to allow Fortnite to return to the App Store.

The ruling, which is effective immediately, addresses Epic’s most pressing concern — the possibility that Apple would cut Epic off from Unreal Engine development on Apple’s operating systems as of Aug. 28. Epic had argued that it was a retaliatory move by Apple that would impact developers “well beyond video games.” Monday’s court decision, which partially granted a temporary restraining order against Apple, means that Epic will be able to maintain active development of the Unreal Engine on iOS and macOS.

Players will compete on behalf of their country in various shooting galleries. Infinity Ward will launch the Trials on different dates:
