Regular-ass flight sim Airplane Mode launching in October

AMC Games’ Airplane Mode — the Microsoft Flight Simulator for the rest of us — is coming to Mac and Windows PC on Oct. 15. When AMC Games says this is “the most realistic flight simulator ever created,” the company means it. Who does Microsoft think we are, anyway? Skilled airline pilots? Not a chance! Airplane Mode understands that we’re all just adult children who need a flight attendant to tell us where our seat’s electrical outlet is. Every time we fly.

From developer Bacronym Games, Airplane Mode lets the player delight in a two- or six-hour flight, from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport to either Halifax, Nova Scotia, in Canada, or Reykjavik, Iceland. AMC Games released a live-action trailer on Thursday that you can watch above.

Among Us 2 canceled — but don’t worry

Among Us, the viral online multiplayer game, was released in 2018 — two years ago. But its popularity peaked recently, in 2020. Developer InnerSloth had already announced a sequel, Among Us 2. But because of the substantial growth of Among Us, InnerSloth is canceling Among Us 2 — to work on improving Among Us.

In a blog post published Wednesday, InnerSloth described the code base for Among Us as “outdated,” and said it had been hoping to adjust it in a sequel. But the original game’s popularity has skyrocketed with a massive influx of players recently, and InnerSloth is choosing, instead of creating a sequel, to bring Among Us up to speed. In a post from earlier in the year, InnerSloth said Among Us had amassed 70,000 to 110,000 users per hour — up from 30-50 players per hour when the game was originally released.

Kirby Fighters 2 is out now for Nintendo Switch

On Wednesday, Nintendo surprise-launched Kirby Fighters 2 on Nintendo Switch. The company had accidentally leaked the game on Tuesday.

Kirby Fighters 2 stars the king of copies, Kirby, and his usual frenemies like King Dedede and Meta Knight. Players battle each other on a variety of different stages, Super Smash Bros. style. But unlike Nintendo’s signature fighting game, Kirby Fighters 2 features health bars instead of percentages.

Nier Replicant coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC in April

Square Enix’s remaster of the original Nier, known in full as Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139, is coming to PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One on April 23, 2021. The game’s creators announced the release date during a Nier-centric livestream titled “We Have a Decent Amount of New Info,” which now appears accurate.

Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 is an update to the 2010 game Nier Replicant. In the West, the game was simply known as Nier, and told the story of a father searching for a cure for his daughter. However, the upcoming remaster of Nier Replicant will follow the original Japanese version of the story, which “invites players into a dark, apocalyptic world as they join a brother’s captivating quest to cure his sister of a deadly disease — a quest which will in turn make them question everything.”

What actually happens when a huge game demo fails at E3

Turn the clock back to 2008. It’s E3, and Bethesda has been tapped to open up Microsoft’s press conference with a live demonstration of its next big game, Fallout 3. This is huge. Beyond performing on a stage for thousands of people, Fallout as a franchise had, at that point, laid dormant for a long time. And here was Bethesda, trying to bring back one of the most celebrated RPGs of all time, except now, the post-apocalyptic game was going to be a first-person shooter. People were skeptical.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for Bethesda. Rehearsing the event was a no-brainer. But according to a recent podcast snippet between Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard and the folks at Xboxwho now own the Fallout studio — things still inevitably went wrong. That’s just the nature of a live event.

Even Final Fantasy 14’s director cries during story quests

Final Fantasy 14’s patch 5.3 added a boatload of content, including new story quests to conclude the Shadowbringers story, cosmetics, Nier raid content, and the ability to fly in older zones.

While Shadowbringers focused on being the Warrior of Darkness in a different realm, our characters are now refocusing on the Garlean Empire that’s been threatening peace for a while now. Old foes have found new allies and a new expansion will likely release sometime next year, pending any delays.
