The Pathless, from the Abzû team, will be a PS5 launch title

The Pathless is the next game from Giant Squid, the developer of Abzû. The Pathless was already planned to launch on PlayStation 4, but on Thursday, Sony announced that it’ll be available as a launch title on the PlayStation 5.

The Pathless was first announced at the The Game Awards in 2018, and was originally intended for a 2019 release. It has since been delayed, which lined its release window up with the transition to PS5. The Pathless will simultaneously launch with the PS4 version on Nov. 12, too.

‘Minecraft Kirby’ isn’t real, but that’s not stopping the internet

Any time a new Smash Bros. Ultimate character is announced, one of the first things people ask isn’t how the fighter plays. Instead, people demand to know what the ever-gluttonous Kirby will look like once he inhales them and copies the new character’s power. And so, shortly after Minecraft Steve’s Smash Bros. reveal, screenshots of what seemed to be a blocky Kirby started going viral.

Here’s the bad news. It’s not real. The images floating around right now all seem to hail from a two year old Wii U mod made by Jory Satana that adds a more pointy version of our puffball to the platform fighter. Already, there’s a comment under the mod posted on Thursday that reads, “well, sakurai did it.”

Destiny 2’s Halloween event, Festival of the Lost, is back this year alongside the Haunted Forest

Destiny 2’s annual Halloween event, Festival of the Lost, has returned this year along with new loot and other fan favorite activities. Destiny 2’s 2020 Festival of the Lost will begin on Oct. 6.

Just like previous Festivals of the Lost, Destiny 2 players will have to travel to the Tower and talk to Eva Levante to start this year’s festivities. She’ll give players a new mask to join in on the Halloween fun, plus a new quest and access to the Haunted Forest.

Apex Legends getting cross-play, beta coming Oct. 6

Apex Legends will soon get cross-platform play on PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One, developer Respawn Entertainment confirmed Thursday. The oft-requested feature will go into beta testing on those platforms on Oct. 6, including on Origin for PC, with cross-play support for the Steam version coming later.

Cross-platform play will be enabled by default, Respawn said, but players can opt out of the feature. The studio warned that players who disable cross-play will only be matched against each other, which runs the risk of “making your queue times very very long.”

The X-Men can die again, but in the weirdest way possible

The defining event of the new mutant reality at Marvel Comics is that they cannot die. No longer can writers pin X-Men story arcs around a character’s demise, nor can they hold the threat of demise over the audience to get them to tune in.

Which would make one wonder how the X-Men writing team would raise the stakes for their first big crossover event of the new era, X of Swords. With this week’s X-Factor #4, we know: The X-Men can die again, in an extremely weird way.

After racking up 11 points in the three games of the round-robin tournament for the Memorial Cup — the Canadian Hockey League’s championship trophy — Neil Yoshi was held off the score sheet through regulation time in the championship game itself, which headed to overtime tied at 2. But he went out and got the job done, netting the Cup-clinching goal for the London Knights in the second half of the overtime period.

Six months after that triumph, Yoshi — who had performed well enough in the tournament to get drafted No. 2 overall by the Los Angeles Kings — was told by his head coach that if he didn’t pick up his play, there was a chance he wouldn’t make the team. Welcome to the pros, kid!

The fallout of Spider-Man’s recasting on PS5 has been swift and ugly

The fallout of Spider-Man’s recasting on PS5 has been swift and ugly

Upgrading visuals for a new version of a video game on a next-generation console is a standard practice, but changing the way your protagonist looks? That’s not something you see very often. And so, when Insomniac Games announced Wednesday that its upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered will have a new Peter Parker, some fans felt shocked and baffled.

After all, there was nothing wrong with the original depiction of Peter Parker in the PlayStation 4 version of the game, which was based on actor John Bubniak. But Ben Jordan, the new face model for Spidey, does look a lot more like Tom Holland, who plays the character on the big screen. This, everyone assumes, must be the reason why Insomniac made the change: to align its video game version of Spider-Man with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The change has inspired a cavalcade of comparisons, many mean-spirited, as folks joke around about an actual human being looking like some kind of knock-off of a different human being.

Halo 3 fans spent 13 years trying to break into a skybox

Halo 3 fans spent 13 years trying to break into a skybox

By now it should be clear that Termacious Trickocity are a tenacious bunch: The Halo group has made a name for itself by achieving elaborate exploits that the wider community often regards as impossible. But usually, when a challenge stands in its way, Trickocity have objects to play with, like weapons or cover, which can then be manipulated to clip through solid space. The Picture Room is different.

The level appears in Halo 3, and it contains massive graphics that display in the background during the final cutscene in the game. After Master Chief activates the Halo, which causes it to self-destruct, he escapes to a ship. But the ride is turbulent enough that it nearly sends him flying out into open space. Getting to the area where the scenery is held in place — the skybox, as it’s known in game development — became somewhat of a white whale for Halo stunters back in 2007. At the time, players found a glitch that allowed the camera to get up close to the skybox, but they couldn’t physically place their characters there. Seeing and being there are two very different things, especially in video games, a medium that prides itself in giving fans interactivity.

Overwatch is free on PC

If you’ve waited this long to get into Overwatch — or are looking to move to the Windows PC version of Blizzard’s team-based hero shooter — your patience has been rewarded. Blizzard is giving away Overwatch for free on PC, thanks to the Overwatch League.

This particular free copy is different from Overwatch’s previous free weekends, apparently. You get to keep it.
