Wrestling stars The New Day joining Gears 5 as playable characters

The New Day — the WWE superstar team of Big E, Kofi Kingston, and Xavier Woods — will join Gears 5 as playable characters sometime soon, Woods announced earlier this week.

This sorta landed out of nowhere on Tuesday, but hey, it’s three more avatars and a nice hat tip to Creed for his years of Gears of War fandom. It’s also totally in character for The New Day, who ran out a tribute to Final Fantasy 14 at Wrestlemania 33, and the year before popped out of a giant box of Booty-O’s cereal in full saiyan armor.

Animal Crossing patch removes another popular item glitch

Animal Crossing: New Horizonslong-awaited winter update introduces a ton of great new content, but fans quickly discovered that Nintendo also used this opportunity to take out a cosmetic exploit colloquially known as the “camo glitch.”

For those out of the loop, the camo glitch refers to a bug where players could force items to take on any color texture, rather than being relegated to the palettes provided by Nintendo. You could, for example, make a room full of decorations that all match the colors of a cupcake, sprinkles and all, as YouTuber AbdallahSmash026 shows off in the leading image of this post. (You can watch a full video showing off the glitch here.) But fans experimented with all sorts of otherwise impossible color combinations.

Animal Crossing now limits time travel a bit

While controversial for some, adjusting your Nintendo Switch’s clock to fast-forward the time or day in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a tradition that stretches back since the beginning of the series. But with the game’s big winter update, fans say that Nintendo has changed what you can and can’t do while time traveling.

First, the good news: You can still time travel. What’s changed, according to many time-traveling players, is that Nintendo has tweaked — or rather, reinforced — how events work. Previously, the company announced that you would be unable to trigger big seasonal events ahead of time, because the game would actually check if your clock was correct. But, as many fans found out, Nintendo wasn’t consistent in enforcing these rules. For example, prior to this new update, you could time travel to Halloween and enjoy the festivities. A handful of recent events have worked this way as well.

New James Bond game coming from Hitman developers

Hitman developer IO Interactive announced Project 007 on Thursday, a new game starring James Bond that will tell the British Secret Service operative’s origin story. In a news release, IO Interactive said Project 007 will “feature a wholly original Bond story exclusively as a video game.”

The teaser trailer is only a few seconds long, but IO gave a few more details on the Project 007 website and in an official announcement. Project 007 is currently in active development at IO Interactive’s offices in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmö, Sweden, on “modern systems and platforms” — presumably meaning current-generation consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, as well as Windows PC.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ popularity has inspired people to use the lifestyle simulator in all sorts of novel ways, like becoming a marketing tool for businesses and organizations. So on Wednesday night, along with the game’s big winter update, Nintendo released some new guidelines for organizations riding the game’s success.

There are things you might expect — you can’t, for instance, make anything that could be considered offensive or vulgar. Rules like these, Nintendo says, are meant to “preserve the experience for the millions of people enjoying the Game recreationally.”

Nintendo sues more hack sellers, ‘a worsening international problem’

Nintendo of America has filed a lawsuit against an Amazon Nintendo Switch hack reseller — the sort of litigation it’s taken on in similar cases in the past. Nintendo’s lawyers allege the Amazon seller, Le Hoang Minh, circumvents Nintendo’s copyright measures in selling an RCM Loader, used to “jailbreak” the Nintendo Switch.

The lawsuit was filed in a Seattle court on Wednesday, according to court documents obtained by Polygon. In the lawsuit, Nintendo outlines what it calls a “serious, worsening international problem” with video game software piracy. It details Nintendo’s security systems, and how the RCM Loaders bypass those systems. The RCM Loader (which is essentially a USB device that plugs into the Nintendo Switch) allows the user to play so-called “pirated” or unauthorized games.

Why some of 2020’s big games didn’t get Game Awards nominations

Nominees for Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards were announced Wednesday. Games, studios, and voice actors have been nominated across 29 different categories, like Game of the Year, Best Score and Music, Innovation in Accessibility, and Best Performance. So why didn’t some of your newest favorites make the cut?

A few highly-anticipated and well-reviewed games were either entirely absent or nominated in only one or two categories, like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Watch Dogs: Legion, Demon’s Souls, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Blame bad timing.

Demon’s Souls glitch gives you one-hit killing power

There is a glitch in Demon’s Souls, related to an item introduced in the remake, that can turn your character into a one-hit killin’ machine — enemies, bosses, demons, the whole shebang.

It takes a little bit of farming and some work, but the Souls YouTube creator ymfah includes a step-by-step, from-scratch tutorial that shows you how to take advantage of the glitch. The simple version: You’re using a Gold Coin, which is new to the game, while speaking to the Maiden in Black as her Luck-boosting effect is active. The Gold Coin also applies a temporary luck increase, so with the two effects combined, the game loses its mind and the player’s Luck starts multiplying infinitely. Seriously.

Star Wars: Squadrons dev heard fans loud and clear, so they’re adding the B-wing

Star Wars: Squadrons, the hit game from Electronic Arts’ Motive Studio, is keeping its promise to the fans. On Wednesday, the developer announced a pair of major new updates for the VR-compatible spaceflight simulation, and they’re going to be absolutely free. Better still, upgrades include the fan-favorite B-Wing starfighter.

“Humbled,” developers wrote on the official EA website. “That’s the word of the hour for all of us on the team. [...] We showed the game to everyone and the reception was so much more than we could have hoped for. It only became more intense after release, too, so we couldn’t help but start working on something a little extra.”
