The Game Awards 2020: the biggest announcements

The Game Awards are the industry’s yearly celebration of video games — the best and most innovative titles that were released in 2020. Games like Ghost of Tsushima, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Hades were all up for awards. But one of the things fans look forward to most is the announcements. And this year, there were certainly no shortages there.

(Not to mention, there were plenty of celebrity appearances, too: Brie Larson, Christopher Nolan, Gal Gadot, Tom Holland, and, of course, Keanu Reeves.)

Bubblegum battle royale game Fortnite debuted chapter 2 season 5 with the addition of bounty hunters, characters who can give you quests or be hired as allies, if not challenged for duels. During The Game Awards 2020, developer Epic Games revealed that the early December leak is true: Master Chief is coming to Fortnite.

Our favorite olive-colored Spartan will be accompanied with a variety of signature Halo vehicles, like the Warthog and Pelican. You can equip a holographic Elite skull as a back bling, and your pick axe can become the Gravity Hammer. Plus, available on Dec. 11, a Fortnite Creative recreation of classic map Blood Gulch will also be playable.

Among Us is getting an airship map

Among Us launched in 2018 with one map, The Skald. Two new maps, Mira HQ and Polus, put the game on streamers’ radar. Before long, the little social subterfuge game blew up to be one of the biggest titles of 2020. At The Game Awards on Thursday, developer InnerSloth showed off something new: the next map coming to Among Us.

It’s called The Airship and takes place in a brightly lit spaceship full of references to InnerSloth’s Henry Stickmin games. Players have new tasks, as well as the ability to start off in different rooms after an emergency meeting, which will shake things up.

Capcom’s making a new Ghosts ’n Goblins

Capcom is bringing back one of its classic franchises, the 2D action game Ghosts n Goblins, in a new title destined for Nintendo Switch. Ghosts ’n Goblins Resurrection was revealed at The Game Awards on Thursday, and it looks ... interesting.

The debut trailer for Ghosts ’n Goblins Resurrection showed series hero Arthur battling familiar enemies from the original Ghosts ’n Goblins and that game’s sequel, Ghouls ’n Ghosts. Artistically, Resurrection appears inspired by medieval artwork, offering distinctly new designs for familiar foes. Gameplay-wise, Capcom’s new Ghosts ’n Goblins appears to stick to the franchise’s 2D side-scrolling tradition.

The blend of multiplayer survival mechanics, crafting, base building, with raids and persistence has grown a devoted following. Since then it’s arrived on just about every major platform, including the Nintendo Switch and mobile.

Valiant Hearts team’s next game takes cues from Tarantino

The makers of Valiant Hearts, which was a standout exploration of the historical significance of World War I that launched with the previous console generation, are taking their next project in a very different direction. Their next effort is called Road 96, a story of modern-day refugees that takes its cues from Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers. The announcement was made this evening in conjunction with The Game Awards.

Road 96 is a procedural narrative adventure where you must escape a country on the brink of collapse and reach the border, thousands of miles away in the mountains,” the developer said Thursday in a news release. “As you travel the back roads of the country during the hot summer of ’96, you will come across the nation’s troubled citizens. Every decision you make will impact the entire journey to the border, which will be unique for every player on each procedurally generated playthrough.”

Here’s what Elite Dangerous looks like as a first-person shooter

The first paid update for Elite Dangerous in more than five years, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, will add tens of thousands of new locations to the game along with traditional first-person shooter gameplay. Frontier Developments unveiled the first look at the action on Thursday during The Game Awards. The expansion is expected to launch in early 2021.

Elite Dangerous is a comically large video game with more than 400 billion star systems in all. So far, players have only been able to experience it from the first-person perspective of a pilot cruising the Milky Way galaxy. Odyssey adds FPS elements for the first time, allowing players to have their own Neil Armstrong moment — giving them the ability to set foot on trillions of distant worlds.
