Slay the Spire will be turned into a board game, Kickstarter coming this spring

Slay the Spire, the hit single-player digital card game, is being developed as a cooperative tabletop card game. A crowdfunding campaign is scheduled for this spring on Kickstarter, but no pricing or delivery date has been announced. Those interested are being asked to sign up to be notified once the campaign launches.

Slay the Spire launched into Steam early access in 2018, where it almost immediately developed a rabid following. The game eventually arrived on modern consoles and iOS. An Android version is also in the works. The roguelike dungeon-crawling adventure uses the same kind of gameplay mechanics that make collectible card games like Magic: The Gathering so addictive. Many thousands of players have sunk many thousands of hours into it over the years. Meanwhile, the game has received critical acclaim — including here at Polygon.

Cyberpunk 2077 speed glitch lets you run faster than cars can load

Not all glitches in Cyberpunk 2077 are as immersion-breaking as players’ butts or unmentionables hanging and flopping out. Some can be useful — especially to speedrunners.

The glitch in question involves modding up V with Maneuvering System, a piece of cyberware that lets the player execute a dodge mid-air. (Find said cyberware in Santo Domingo’s Arroyo sub-district.) As Redditor Strikielol found (via Eurogamer), it also allows players to dash mid-air. When a mid-air dash is properly timed, it gives V super-speed.

Apex Legends is a boxing game now

It’s been a big couple of weeks for Apex Legends’ Pathfinder. Last week, the grappling hook-wielding robot got a fantastic animated short about his origin story, and this week he’s getting his very own in-game event. The new event is called Fight Night, and it’s bringing a few boxing-themed twists to regular matches of Apex Legends.

The biggest change in the Fight Night event will be the new limited-time mode called Airdrop Escalation. This new mode will be what developer Respawn Entertainment is calling a “Takeover” mode, which means that it will replace the regular “Play Apex” mode for a limited time. For the most part Airdrop Escalation will be just like regular battle royale, except that it’s going to include a lot more airdrops, all with fully kitted weapons.

The Sinking City returns to stores, legal dispute continues

The Sinking City is a Lovecraftian horror detective game that was released in the summer of 2019, and then disappeared from most online storefronts in Aug. 2020 due to a dispute between publisher Nacon and developer Frogwares. Today, the game returns to storefronts. It is available for purchase on the Microsoft Store for Xbox One; it will return to Steam and the PlayStation Store at a later date.

The game was removed from Steam, the Epic Games Store, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 on Aug. 25, 2020. At the time, Frogwares released an open letter detailing its side of its legal dispute with publisher Nacon, which had recently merged with Bigben Interactive. The letter claimed that Nacon had refused to pay royalties, with the total owed standing at “roughly 1 million euros.” Frogwares also took issue with Nacon’s marketing of the game, which the studio saw as misleading consumers to think Nacon was the project’s developer.

Players in Eve Online broke a world record — and then the game itself

A massive war in Eve Online has been raging for the better part of seven months now, breaking records both for the most players involved in a single battle and, this past week, for the most destruction wrought in the game’s 18-year history. On Saturday, thousands of players went at it again — only to find that the game’s infrastructure simply wasn’t able to support the fight.

This past weekend, more than 13,700 players showed up to fight — more than the game’s previous record-breaking peak of 6,557. When the majority of those players attempted to come together in the same star system to engage in the actual battle, Eve effectively stopped functioning as intended. In a blog post late Monday night, developer CCP Games said it simply cannot predict the stability of its virtual battlefields for engagements of this scale.

Breath of the Wild’s NPCs are actually Miis, modder confirms

It turns out that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s character modeling really does follow Nintendo’s Mii format. This means an enterprising modder has figured out a way to get NPCs to look like specific Miis.

Twitter user @HEYimHeroic, who has assiduously cataloged more than 100 official Miis on their Mii Library site, discovered over the weekend that Breath of the Wild NPCs “use an advanced version of the Mii format” called UMii. “UMiis have almost all the same parameters as Wii U/3DS Miis, with a few minor differences here and there,” Alice wrote on Reddit on Monday.

Nintendo buys Luigi’s Mansion 3 maker Next Level Games

Nintendo has acquired Next Level Games, the makers of Luigi’s Mansion 3 on Nintendo Switch, the company announced on Tuesday. Vancouver-based Next Level has delivered seven titles published by Nintendo, going back to Super Mario Strikers for the GameCube in 2005.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. A statement from Nintendo said that “a number of owner-directors [of Next Level] recently determined that the time is right for them to sell their shares.” The company expects that a closer relationship with the studio will deliver “an anticipated improvement in development speed and quality.” Nintendo says the deal will close by March 1.

Medal of Honor developer shows how the level design sausage is made

Video game enthusiasts rarely get to see games in anything but their finished, shipped state — or something very close to it. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you this, but video games don’t pop out of the console fully rendered and ready to go; there are a lot of unseen steps to development that players simply don’t see.

On Twitter Saturday, Respawn Entertainment senior game designer Alexa Kim pulled back the curtain on a part of development she had a hand in for the recently released virtual reality game Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. Specifically, Kim called out the prototyping stage of level design, which is intended to lay out a particular level’s “function,” she said. The tweet has since gone viral, with players amazed at differences between the prototypes — called block outs — and the finished product.

World of Warcraft’s leaked cinematic has fans worried about Sylvanas’ storyline

Players started the newest World of Warcraft expansion by chasing former Warchief and current villain Sylvanas Windrunner through the veil into the Shadowlands. But despite that, we have only seen glimpses of her in cutscenes. The newest cutscene from Torghast’s Twisting Corridors also featuring Sylvanas has been data-mined by Wowhead, and fans are already reacting — and worrying about Sylvanas’ ultimate fate.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Torghast and upcoming cinematic content.
