Ubisoft delays Riders Republic, its massively multiplayer extreme sports game

Ubisoft’s massively multiplayer racing game that combines mountain biking, snowboarding, wingsuiting, and other outdoor extreme sports has been delayed. Riders Republic was previously scheduled for release on Feb. 25, but Ubisoft delayed the game indefinitely on Thursday to allow for more development time.

Study chides PS5, Xbox Series X for default power settings

The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series S both use significantly more electricity than their predecessors when playing games designed for the new consoles, according to a report by the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental-advocacy group. However, the NRDC found that the new consoles draw less power than previous-generation systems when playing backward-compatible games, and while using streaming video apps.

The NRDC’s analysis — which it also performed in 2013 at the launch of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 — praises the low-power modes that both Sony and Microsoft’s new consoles offer. The energy-saving modes allow users to resume full operation within 10 to 15 seconds while drawing less than 1 watt of electricity on standby. However, the NRDC criticized Microsoft and Sony for choosing not to make that the default power setting — the same charge that the organization levied about the PS4 and Xbox One.

Super Nintendo World opening delayed due to COVID-19 pandemic

Universal Studios Japan’s Super Nintendo World theme park was set to open on Feb. 4. But on Thursday, the company announced plans to postpone the opening, due to a COVID-19 spike and “emergency declaration” in the Osaka Prefecture. The park will now open sometime after Feb. 4, when the state of emergency is no longer in effect. Due to the nature of the pandemic, it’s entirely unclear when that will be.

This postponement comes less than a month after Nintendo devoted an entire Direct to the new theme park. Nintendo and Universal Studios Japan have spent the last year teasing fans about the park, revealing its fantastic looking food as well as its Mario Kart-themed ride, Koopa’s Challenge.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is getting a new Zombies map

The dead are rising once again in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The latest Call of Duty game is getting a brand new Zombies map called Firebase Z, developer Treyarch announced Thursday. The map will be free for all players when it’s released on Feb. 4.

The only thing we know about the map right now is that it’s another secret scientific research lab and that there’s another Dark Aether outbreak there. This means that we should expect plenty more zombies as well as a few of the twists and unique enemies that always pop up in Zombies maps.

This Mario Kart shortcut took almost 13 years to pull off

Mario Kart Wii is nearly 13 years old, but hardcore players are still trying to bend it to their will with “ultra shortcuts” — massive lap skips that require unreasonably high levels of skill. But years after the discovery of the Rainbow Road ultra shortcut and over a decade after the game’s release, a streamer named Arthur finally nailed the shortcut, giving him the fastest time in the world.

If you’re unfamiliar with Mario Kart Wii, the game is comically broken in terms of how it counts laps. Players can trick the game into believing they’ve completed a lap normally, despite driving out of bounds or forcing Lakitu to fish them out of the pit and back onto the road, according to a YouTube documentary from Summoning Salt. If players can manage to hit that final checkpoint before the finish line, many maps will count it as a fair lap when players cross the finish line. This has led players to try all sorts of shenanigans, like going way out of bounds to carefully nab a checkpoint, or driving over “undrivable” terrain.

Cyberpunk 2077 mod gives V a party of companions

Cyberpunk 2077 is a fun RPG, but it can get a little lonely. With a few exceptions for certain quests, and the occasional appearance of Johnny Silverhand, V is mostly on their own on their quests through Night City. But a new fan-made mod aims to fix that by giving V a cast of companions everywhere they go. This mod was created by user SiJiaoCunDeDaZhuangJi on Nexus Mods, and it’s called Judy-River-Saul-Takemura Companion Game Save.

With this mod, playing Cyberpunk 2077 feels more like a BioWare game, because you’re rolling around with a full party. That being said, it’s not the most polished experience. The mod creator warns users about a few hiccups they may encounter in the mod’s description.

New Pokémon Snap comes to Nintendo Switch in April

Finally, some good news: New Pokémon Snap will be released for Nintendo Switch on April 30, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company announced Thursday. The sequel to the original Pokémon Snap, released in 1999 for Nintendo 64, will send players to the Lental region, where they’ll snap photos of Pokémon in the wild.

Players will work with Professor Mirror and his assistant Rita “on an ecological survey to photograph Lental Pokémon thriving in nature,” according to a news release. Players will tour the Lental islands in an on-rails vehicle known as the Neo-One through various paths. Lental Pokémon will be attracted to “Fluffruit,” an edible item which will assuredly make photographing creatures in the wild much easier.
